St Anthony wasn't the first desert father. If you had read the life of st Anthony you would have known it wasn't him. But since you haven't, I'll tell it to you. He's the father of monasticism but not the first desert father. It was st Paul of Thebes.

I would agree with you that spreading the Gospel is extremely important. I find it interesting to study the monastic individuals because of how the ideas of community, teaching, spreading the Gospel, etc., were handled and debated. I think an interesting note to take from Anthony was that the emperor and his son sought counsel from Anthony because of what he was doing. I wonder how many hundreds of Christian leaders who ministered daily would've loved to have been in the situation to have the emperor reach out to them about the Gospel. I guess it comes down to how we view the idea of evangelization. Many monastic leaders would have people come from all over the world to learn more about Jesus, as these individuals were seen as enlightened and holy. Their words were cherished as authoritative and helpful to anyone in their walk of life. On the other hand, you have the "spreading to all the nations" evangelization that went out and tried to teach people of all nations and tongues. So I guess it comes down to the argument that if people are coming to learn about Jesus, is that spreading the Gospel? Or do you have to seek out people to spread the news about Jesus to spread the Gospel? Would love to hear any thoughts you have about that idea if you want to comment below.

@Christian Biographies you make some really good points, and I agree, there are so many ways the Gospel can be spread. We men, or women, sometimes tend to try and put God into a box of our own understanding. If God can use a talking donkey, He can surely use anyone and anything to minister his Word. Please, forgive me, brother, if I came off as haughty or indignant. Even though I am not Chatholic, I have come to understand, appreciate, and respect many of the early church fathers. Without them, we might not be where we are today in much of our understanding. Concerning God's use of the hermits, many of them also wrote volumes of works that help us even today to understand the Word of God. Even though the Holy Spirit is the ultimate guide and the Holy Scripture is the true Word of God, Peter was told to feed the sheep. I'm getting a little long-winded and off-track here, so I will end by saying, I respect what you are doing and look forward to more content.

The monasticism of the Orthodox Church is entirely based of of the discipline of Saint Anthony the Great, the desert father. And you can find monasteries of that discipline all over the world now, from the deserts of the Middle East to the frosty forests of Alaska and the stepes of Russia. As far as Roman Catholics go, the monastic order of Saint Benedict is most similar to that of Saint Anthony the Great.
