This song fell off my radar for many years. I’m so glad I rediscovered it. When I first heard it I was a 15-16 and honestly, it didn’t do much for me then. In the last 3 weeks it’s become not only my new favorite VM song, but also one of my favorite songs, period.

Van's comments on the song via Rolling Stone Interview 1971: " I’d been working on this song about the scene going down in Belfast. And I wasn’t sure what I was writing but anyway the central image seemed to be this church called St. Dominic’s where people were gathering to pray or hear a mass for peace in Northern Ireland. Anyway, a few weeks ago I was in Reno for a gig at the University of Nevada. And while we were having dinner, I picked up the newspaper and just opened it to a page and there in front of me was an announcement about a mass for peace in Belfast to be said the next day at St. Dominic’s church in San Francisco. Totally blew me out. Like I’d never even heard of a St. Dominic’s church. Interviewer: How did the song turn out? Morrison: Great. In fact I’m gonna be recording it in a couple of days. Interviewer: What did you end up titling it? Morrison: “St. Dominic’s Preview.” You know something? I haven’t a clue to what it means"

Hi Dr Steve i was just browsing some of the great mans music videos and just spotted your lovely comment about Van the man i have to fully agree with you he is a true musical GENIUS a brilliant story teller and poet his songs are true CLASSICS there are so many wonderful song writers who can express themselves in there songs plus playing an instrument but what Van has ahead of all of them he can go way beyond that and also play three of the most difficult instruments to master the Saxophone Electric Guitar and the harmonica and play them all in his songs and i know how difficult it is to play the saxophone because i play it myself , Kind Regards Alan in Ireland
@stevew51467 жыл бұрын
Alan from Ireland, you are very lucky to live in the same country as Van. He has changed my entire musical ear since indulging in everything Van beginning only two years ago. I regret (deeply) not discovering him in the early 80s when I was in high school. I got to see him in Las Vegas in 2016. Great concert. I flew from Chicago where I live to NY City to see him at Forest Hills a few months earlier but missed the concert. Long story, but it crushed me to miss that concert when i had 7th row seats! I want to see him again but in a more smaller venue, where it's more of his liking and style. I just wish he'd come to Chicago. Thank you for your comment. Van hypnotises us with his lyrics and melodies and even the tones of his vocals. Life's great enjoyment is playing catch up with his career from the sixties until now. I am constantly in discovery mode with him and all his great band members over the decades. And he plays piano and I believe I saw him on a drum kit in an old video. If yo study his music, many lines are from great artists' lyrics he admires or quotes from people. Then he throws in the abstract from conscious streaming. His music can be studied like coursework. Just incredible. Also, we have to give great credit to his current band who has been with him for so long now. Paul and the guys and his wonderful dame (she's from the US) backup singer....all so good. Thanks Allen God Bless.

I'm 44 and been listening to him since my early 20's and I'm still playing catch up and in constant discovery mode with his music. He's gotten me through some hard times and good times. I revere this song and the album from which it comes. I think it's Morrison's best, and that's saying a lot. So I came to this live version with trepidation -- too often, the artistry in the studio doesn't survive the stage. I needn't have worried. This is stunning. Even without (Buffalo guy) Gary Malaber's drums, without electric guitar, he delivers once again, and then some. Magnificent.

Saw him live at the Santa Monica Civic in the middle 70s. I've seen the Kinks, Jethro Tull, 3 Dog Night, Santana, CSNY, Robert Plant, Gordon Lightfoot, and more than I can remember, but that concert was the finest I remember...when Jack was on the saxophone. Ain't the same without that sax...

There is absolutely nobody like Van. He defined belting it out with attitude. I never dreamed he would still be doing it today listening to the Last Waltz 40 years ago. His throat must be cast iron.
