The pit was sunk c 1857, ceased coal production 1941, stayed open for ventilation and training until 1964

That area has now totally changed and you wouldn't believe that there was once a pit there . st George's pit survived as a ventilation pit for chanters colliery until 1964

Yes Chris, you can still see the old wooden shaft fencing round the shafts amongst the trees

@@coalboard6292 my grandad was a boiler man at the pit at one time unbelievably they had a uniflow steam engine (super modern) driving the ventilation fan (musgrave Bolton) again it survived until chanters closed in 1966 regards

I started in the pits in 1975, there were still a lot of old miner working then, quite a few still wore trousers, shirt and waistcoat. One even walked home in his muck rather than us the pit head baths.
