One of the most sublimely beautiful choral works ever composed. So lovely for Advent. I heard that Manz summoned a few singers to his deathbed to sing this repeatedly till he passed.

I always heard his wife brought them in. But also, this song was written while he and his wife feared their son was not going to make it. She worked on the text and he wrote the music. This as their outpouring of faith, well, is beyond flesh and blood. “They need no light, nor lamp, nor sun for Christ will be their all”

My church's Christmas concert was cancelled when a number of choir members contracted COVID. But now we will do that concert in June, for any day is a good day to celebrate the Incarnation of our Lord! And if we believe His Word, a work which the Holy Spirit is able to produce in us, we look forward to Christ's coming to end history and finalize His eternal judgment on demons and sin, which so trouble life on this planet now.

St. John's Choir, Thank You for recording that piece from this side of the pond. What a wonderful recording! Very Best Christmas Wishes, from St. Louis, Missouri (Yes, I was in the audience when you sang in St. Louis!)

I must be missing something. To me it sounds like a supremely good choir (which they are, of course) walking through a piece that's not particularly holding their attention. The words are fine and the notes are fine but I fail to see where one is informing the other. A missed opportunity.

Agreed - those trebles at the start weren't even watching the conductor, and their top note was only just short of a screech - "Could do better".......
