A beautiful little film capturing some important history! I'd like to add to some of the contributing facts as to why the island was abandonded... Although the the continuous arrival of tourists to the island would have had an affect on the islanders future (basically they became more and more riliant on outside influences) More recent investigations on St Kilda which included soil analysis found that while the islanders were attempting to fertilise the land they had in fact poisoned it!

This is a beautiful film. Scotland lost something very precious when we forced this community to disperse and ultimately die. The economics of the day forced the issue unfortunately. Modern life and the tourists brought in by the steamers corrupted the St Kildans so much in the Victorian age that the subsequent younger generations of St Kildans concluded that the mainland was where the future lay for them. At the end, there were not enough young St Kildans left to make survival possible.

Soil was deliberately moved from impoverished areas to the main cultivation areas while waste was also being collected as a form of manure to be spread across the village fields as a fertiliser. Soil samples taked from the grazing lands, fields and midden pits showd high levels of toxins which included lead, cadmium, zinc, and arsenic which can be mainly attributed to the use of bird carcases in the munure. Whilst not only waste from birds was collected but also human waste was used.

As a result these toxic chemicals remain in the soil at high levels... even now! Crop failures were recorded even back in the mid 18th centuary, of course climate would also have been an important factor. So the poor natives would have and in fact were struggling to sustain crops prior to there departure in 1930. A very similar story, although from a very different period can be seen in Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean.

If only they had built a TESCO and introduced a benefit culture like we have on the mainland, all would have been fine!
