There is no such requirement. According to the General Instructions of the Roman Missal, that is, the liturgical law of the Church. It is at the option of the Celebrant which direction he faces such as having female alter servers, or female lectures or even a Con-Celebrant is his option.

I am astounded at how many "majoring in minors" comments are offered here. Those who complain about the lack of an "ad orientem" celebration of the Holy Eucharist have missed the central point: that this and any devoted celebration of Christ's Body and Blood matters far more than what direction a priest is facing.

Did you know that in many Roman churches, Masses have been said versus populum from the beginning (St Peter's basilica, St John Lateran, Santa Mary Magor's, etc.) That is, however, due to the fact that the apse of those basilicas face west. So that is some merit to the critique in this case, since the apse faces east at St Michael's Abbey.

@@colerobbins124that’s because they were build towards the west. They still celebrated Ad Orientem but the people didn’t face towards the east. It’s rather a tradition in Rome or a few parts of Italy alone than that it is widespread throughout the world. They would still put big candles Between the celebrant and the faithful so they wouldn’t be distracted by his face

​@onno529 According to Cardinal Ratzinger's Spirit of the Liturgy, you are wrong. The people in fact would have still faced east even if the priest was celebrating the Holy Sacrifice behind the altar. However this does not invalidate Mass facing the people, St. Michaels Abbey has retained the venerable tradition of having altars freestanding and not against the wall.

The Tridentine Missal was published in 1570, centuries after the life of St. Norbert. However, you could get at that St. Norbert himself wouldn't have recognized the Ordinary Form Mass as is celebrated in St. Michaels Abbey.

Still this is Wrong in all categories of celebrating the Mass, All the saint’s celebrate Vatican 1 TLM not Vatican 2 Novus Ordo, the scriptures requires 3 important requirements to be valid of celebrating the Mass which is 1. Crucifix for Jesus Christ 2. The Tabernacle 3. ALTAR, priest must face the ALTAR sending souls to Heaven and NOT facing people during the celebration of the Mass,
