Close your eyes and listen, and you might imagine someone who looks a bit like Otis Redding. Open them, and you're likely to see someone who looks more like your neighborhood bank teller.
That man standing on my desk in the golden shoes is Paul Janeway. He was, in fact, a bank teller in Alabama not long ago - and this stupendous seven-piece band from Birmingham has only been doing this since 2012. But take a look at this Tiny Desk Concert and you'll see why St. Paul And The Broken Bones' music is so winning. It's got heart and soul and flair, with a well-worn sound buoyed by strong, fresh songwriting. -- BOB BOILEN
Set List:
"Half The City"
"Call Me"
"Broken Bones And Pocket Change"
Credits:
Producers: Bob Boilen, Maggie Starbard; Audio Engineer: Kevin Wait; Videographers: Becky Lettenberger, Colin Marshall, Maggie Starbard; Assistant Producer: James Clark; photo by James Clark/NPR

Just wanted to say that this band has been the unchallenged favorite for my toddler. He’s only two and is very fickle about if he’ll even tolerate the Wiggles, Sesame Street, Daniel Tiger, Super Simple Songs, etc etc and gets easily bored with other “adult” music (Led Zepplin is up there but still hit or miss with him), but this band-something about it just makes him so happy, even when he’s having a tantrum. He bounces and punches the air when he’s listening to this video and has done so for about a year. So congrats, you have the approval of the world’s pickiest music critic.

From 10:00 - 11:00 is the most soulful heart-rending performance I've ever seen. If he's faking it then he needs an Oscar tied to a Grammy. This guy is a force of nature. I hear a lot of comparisons to Otis Redding and Al green. He has a similar voice, and it's that damn good. Not to mention these aren't covers. These are their original songs that make you want to play them again again. I'm so happy I found this.

I've never seen such a passionate, emotional performance by a vocalist from my generation. I'm an early 80's baby. Stuff like this doesn't exist anymore and it's sad. This dude genuinely was feeling every ounce of what's coming out of his mouth and whoever said he's faking it, or imitating is ignorant and is just envious of what they can never do. Music has been around since before Christ, so musicians are obviously going to be influenced by other musicians. Music wouldn't exist as a major in college if this wasn't so. Amazing performance. WOW!

Last night they played the Hollywood Bowl Fest. Dude came off stage into crowd for some electric performanceship. He had a Black woman fall out. The voice sounds like a mix of Terrence Trent Darby and Otis Redding. Excellent job from these Alabama lads. A pleasant surprise.

You may think that he is an imitation; you may even call him a thief; but there is no denying that what spilled on that tiny desk was not only his sweat, but his soul. Someone whose heart is not deeply and wholly invested in every single moment of that song doesn't have an ice cube's chance in hell of delivering anything even approaching that level of gut-wrenching, heart-pouding, tear-jerking exposition of soul. These are facts.

I've been telling my friends and family that for years. There's all kinds of good music, if you're willing to find it. If you just listen to the radio in the car, forget it. That's how it was when I was growing up. Radio, vinyl, 8-tracks - and finally the relative freedom of cassettes. But only real music fans played music on multiple formats. Most people weren't rocking reel-to-reels and studio speakers. There was good music, but we all knew the same good music. We all heard the same terrible music, too. We don't have to suffer bad music any more! Find what you like on the internet, it's all out there. Peace and good music to you, Isaiah Merriweather.
