Sorry to tread on anyone's bubble, but the Master System *ITSELF* is SEGA losing to Nintendo. Why? *Because the Master System was SEGA's* *_MID-GEN_* *update* in a last-ditch effort to not completely get destroyed -- as their ACTUAL Famicom competitor, the anemic SG-1000, in fact had. 😐

One thing to note about Space Megaforce is that unlike most Aleste games, it uses checkpoints which doesn't work in an Aleste game at all and as good as it was, some people say that it MAY have prompted Compile that vertical STGs were not worth it anymore especially when they struck gold with Puyo Puyo.

This is honestly one of the first times I heard anyone say anything substantially negative about Super Aleste. It was in fact famous for laying down the gauntlet to other SNES shmup devs and doing what Konami and Irem didn't with their slowdown riddled early games for the system in throwing around a lot of stuff on screen without much in the way of performance problems. Yes, the 8-bit Aleste games throw more enemies at you, but they also don't have all the large objects that Super Aleste has. Fun video though! Next up: 5 times the Atari 2600 DESTROYED the SEGA Dreamcast lol
@st1ka
@st1ka 2 жыл бұрын
That is true and to be fair, I think Aleste is a good game. But I have to admit, every time I see Super Aleste being brought up it usually comes with some variation of "it's not as good as the other ones but". But maybe that's just me? xD I will say the articles I've read about it, namely hardcore gaming 101 seemed to think the same at least. But to be fair, people are of course allowed to disagree with me. In the end, this video series is actually more a subtle way to promote and talk about other games and cool versions of said games without going the old route of "HIDDEN GEMS VIDEO #26!" :P

My buddy Ben of the channel One Credit Classics regularly livestreams 1CCs or attempts at, as well! As the current Space Megaforce Twin Galaxies champion I will defend it a bit. Although the Power Strike games are amazing, SMF features lots of variety on its stages to mix up the action, I love the weapon system where you mod shots on the fly and the graphics and music really show off what the system can do especially since the game doesn't slow down unlike many other Snes or Sms shooters. Still agree with other picks though.

to be fair, I do greatly enjoy Space Mega Force, I think it's one of the best SHMUPs on the SNES. It's just me personally I do prefer Power Strike 2 and I often see Aleste fans being disappointed with Super Aleste. With that said, I do understand why someone would prefer Super Aleste over Power Strike 2 as it does have its advantages over the master system game ^^

Oh boy you’re gonna get crap for that Aleste comparison! 🤣 But that’s the whole point to making spicy content. I’m actually going to agree that Power Strike II is amazing and insane what they did on the SMS. And though I do really like Super Aleste as it’s also a very good game for me, I would pick PS2 as the most impressive technical achievement and one of Compile’s best games. Super Aleste was also impressive in that it has nearly zero slowdown and the game Compile used to show other developers the SNES was capable of it, during a time where most SNES shooters had crazy slowdown issues like Gradius3 and Super RType. It was Compile showing how it’s done. I’m sure they simplified the graphics a bit for that reason to prioritize performance. So it’s kind of like saying this amazing game is better than this very good one (in terms of technical achievement). But if you get a lot of crap for it point them here. I’m in the camp that Super Aleste is also a really good game but not everyone’s cup of tea, as like you said the gameplay is very different from most Compile games. A lot of environmental hazards and levels focused around them. But if I had to choose a favorite between the two it would be Power Strike! It’s so good I had to buy a physical copy years ago. And the awesome thing about the M2 Aleste collection is you can play it at the proper 50hz speed.

I'm pretty sure I played the Amiga and Megadrive version but I don't remember which one. I felt they were pretty average at best. Also with all the mascot platformers that were being released at that time for me they were easily ignored. Great vid as always mate. I wonder if any comparisons can be made involving the Intellivision system? Like, I think I recall my 6-year old self enjoying Burgertime on the Intellivision a lot, but could never get myself interested in the NES or Arcade versions of Burgertime later. Regarding Maui Mallard "I think the Mega Drive version is better" - preach, brother. Preach. Maui Mallard is another great example of "less is more". Ostensibly the SNES and PC Cold Shadow games are expanded and refined versions of the Mega Drive game, but doubling the size of the levels and adding a bunch of collectibles turned the game from a tight, focused platformer into a boring, meandering slog. The original Maui Mallard is still one of my favourite Mega Drive games, whereas I usually get fed up with the SNES game before I even reach the second level.

It might sound weird but technically Brazil is NTSC area because it's game systems run at 60Hz and USA region games. Here we use PAL at 60Hz exactly for it being a hindrance for "illegal smuggling of goods" (TVs, VCRs, video game systems).
@st1ka
@st1ka 2 жыл бұрын
Oh interesting. I always thought Brazil was a variation on PAL?
@leonardoliveira
@leonardoliveira 2 жыл бұрын
@@st1ka It's called "PAL-M" exactly because it is a modification of the M broadcasting system (B&W TV) used in the United States. (USA color system is called "NTSC-M") Brazil government paid German firm Telefunken to develop a change to use PAL color encoding under the M system so there would be no need to change the transmitters already installed for broadcasting color video. When Brazil choose to use Japanese ISDB-T system of digital TV they paid the system developers to change the codec from MPEG2 to H.264 even though there isn't any real benefit on doing so. It's just to make sure Japanese TVs can not work here without firmware changes.

My biggest issue with the Maui Mallard game is the camera. It whips around whenever you change direction that it made me feel a little nauseous. Also I think the sprite is a bit too big for the screen which when combined with how fast Maui moves, makes running into enemies and hazards a real problem. -obscene amount of arbitrary collectibles -game design that often focuses on collecting said collectibles in obnoxious maze like levels rather than any actual platforming challenge -platforms which often blend into the backgrounds making it difficult to judge where you actually can/can't safely jump. -janky hitboxes -player character takes damage from all sorts of random shit, most infamously droplets of water. Of course that's platformers, Euroshmup's are a whole different can of worms (bad power-up systems that usually involve a shop mechanic, basic enemies take way too many hits to kill, nonsensical enemy placement/patterns, plodding level design/your ship is typically way too slow)

Pretty sure there's one or two tracks from NG3 that are just straight-up missing and replaced with something else. It's also bizarrely censored in ways that the NES originals weren't. tl;dr it's just an incredible missed opportunity. Good list overall. Super Aleste is still pretty nice with a great OST, the levels are just overly long and the art style less distinct. James Pond 2 has a *lot* of cut content on SMS, not exactly a destruction there though I agree with you on the sfx. Comparing to the MD I would say the Illusion games and Jurassic Park are better than their MD counterparts, and Wonder Boy 3/Monster World 2 is in some ways better than Monster World 3 (though the SMS port of the latter game isn't that great). Good idea for a video, sometimes limitations do lead to more interesting and well designed games. I already was interested in that Aleste collection but I have to get that now, interesting that Power Strike 2 came out almost 2 years after Super Aleste, that might explain why it seems more impressive for the system it's on, although the other had some nice looking levels as well. You do need to play it on hardest difficulty to have fun with it otherwise it can be boring as you just hold down the fire button mindlessly. I don't think it's overrated but considering that some say it is the best on Snes or even of that generation when U.N. Squadron, anything from Konami and Macross especially were all better then I can understand why someone would think that. I have only played S.Aleste so I will have to see if I end up agreeing.
