The Pie3D Game Creation system was something I spent countless hours having fun with. As janky as it was, it has a very special place in my heart. By the time they discontinued the MS-DOS version, I had learned how to get the engine to do all kinds of stuff that wasn't even listed in the documentation. Due to it's esoteric graphics format, and single 256 color palette per-game limitation, its also where I learned how to down sample graphical assets with minimal quality degradation. I can think of a couple other Christmas programs (they're not really games) that I had as a kid for the Commodore 64. I was a little kid when I got them as gifts and I really liked them at the time, but if you didn't grow up with them they wouldn't be that exciting for most people. Little kids might still like them, I guess. "Jingle Disk": this is an animated story about a mouse doing stuff on Christmas. (I don't remember the details, but it's not a complicated story or anything.) It also has the ability to print Christmas cards. There is an Apple ][ version of the game on the other side of the disk. I got to watch it once on my school's computer, and remember some things being different, but I don't remember what those differences were. "A Popples Christmas Adventure": A similar type of program to "Jingle Disk", but this one features the Popples, where were a plush toyline from the 80s that I doubt anyone that wasn't alive then is even aware of. They were little creatures that could turn into balls. This one also told a story, and at one point there is a maze, so I guess it technically counts as a game.

You have to remember James actually likes Castlevania 2, his first AVGN video (when he was Angry Nintendo Nerd). While I don't think he enjoyed Die Hard, it's fair to say AVGN defecates on good games, even ones he likes.

Don’t be too hard on 3D Xmas Adventure. I was part of the GCS community back in the day and yes the engine wasn’t the same quality of Doom or Hexen but to be honest for a highschool kid who didn’t have a lot of programming experience this was pretty good for making a simple 3D shooter. The developer Pie In the Sky also worked hard to port the engine to Windows 95 adding the ability to import 3D models and also had released a more advance AI engine towards the end of the life of the product.
@st1ka2 жыл бұрын
Oh I get that it was made to promote the engine and I think that as a tool of the time, it was pretty cool.

I don't think you gave the NES Home Alone a fair shake. It's far more challenging than you think, and your method for laying traps in a loop wouldn't work because: A: All Traps can only be used 3 times, with one exception (the chandeliers) 2: Each trap has a different "knock-out" time, with the Chandeliers being the longest, which can actually be used 4 times in total if you are successful in dropping them on the Wet bandits as they pass beneath you on the second floor (requires timing/luck because bandit search at random unless they see you.) D: Surviving the whole 20 minute is easier said than done and you didn't even mention the hiding spots, with each also having their own time limits and can only be passed over twice by an enemy when hidden. Keeping track of how many traps you've used and how long you have hidden in the hiding spots makes the game a unique experience that is unlike any other NES game, and is actually developed by Bethesda, makers of stuff like Skyrim, so for NES game 'gems', I honestly don't think you have the stones to tackle the game proper. I've only ever beaten it once with save states, I doubt many could beat it without cheating.
@st1ka2 жыл бұрын
To be fair a game being hard or made by Bethesda doesn't mean it's good. The issue is the game is simply boring.
@RobotacularRoBob2 жыл бұрын
@@st1ka For a Home Alone game, it did a lot more to make the game unique and replayable, and challenging enough at a time when kids had to make do with what they had. For those who understood the rules and kept trying, it's almost Dark Souls level of frustrating the closer you get to the 20 minute mark before being caught. I give it high marks for it's divisiveness and challenge alone.
@st1ka2 жыл бұрын
@robotacular9601 I do agree that the game does a good job at being faithful to the movie. Personally though, I feel the MS-DOS game did a better job at balancing it though ^-^
