I've had a few people ask me what stab size I would recommend with the 1310 for winging, so I spent an afternoon swapping out the 450, 350 & 300 progressive rear stabs (I'm also very familiar with the 400 & 375) to try to figure out how small I can go in order to maximise maneuverability WITHOUT sacrificing too much in terms of lift and pump performance. For once the results were surprisingly clear...and surprising!

Just measured the span of the stabiliser I made beginning of this year to go with my 850 span 1320sqcm and 900 span 1020 wings and it's 360. I find a short quick pump and glide works really well on it. I was initially surprised that I don't stall it holding front foot pressure in waves coming from bigger stabilisers where that had been an issue but now I'm just used to it and love it. I exclusively wing though, the pumping is just for lulls 😆 I did try a wider span axis stabiliser with an ART but I found it locked in too much going out through waves with.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing. I'm hoping to try out some larger front wings for light wind soon. We get a lot of light wind in San Diego. I can get up in 10 knots with a 6.0 on an HPS980, but admittedly it's a chore. I'd love to get something for those days when you are questioning if it's even worth it to get out.

Do you still prefer the 1300 for winging? Any difference in low end 1300 vs 1310?

The 1310 definitely has a much better low end than the 1300. TBH i like them both but for different conditions. The 1310 is the ultimate light wind session saver for winging, but the 1300 is still my favourite for downwinding in marginal swell

Dominic, thanks so much for this info! I am inspired to purchase. My aim is winging in super light winds. I am 93kg. Reading thru your comments it seems you'd recommend the 1310 + PCHM 820 mast + ultrashort fuse + 475 stab for my weight? You seem to prefer 820 mast length. Is this what you'd recommend for me as well? And would 350 stab be too little for my weight?
@dominichoskyns9091
@dominichoskyns9091 Жыл бұрын
Yes, the 1310 is DEFINITELY the best foil for super light wind winging, and I would recommend the 820 HM mast, but with an ADVANCE fuse, the ultrashort or even the crazyshort advance fuse - depending on your skill level. The 1310 greatly benefits from using the advance fuses. For the rear stab, at your weight I would say you have some options. The p475 has the most lift, therefore will allow you to foil in the lightest wind, but it's slow - not a problem if you're a beginner but as you progress you'll want something that allows higher performance. The v2 460 is also great to pair with the 1310. It is faster than the big progressive stabs, and increases the glide of any front foil you use it with. If you're going to be doing a lot of downwinding then this is the stab to get for sure. At your weight I would say the p400 is as small as you could go without losing too much lift and pump performance. If possible it's best to have 2 sizes of rear stab as this greatly extends the range of conditions you can use your front foil in. If you're only going to get one stab then maybe the p450 or the v2 460, but if you can get 2 then the p475 & p400 would be mint

I am thinking to get 1310. I already have HPS 1050 wing with fuse 784 Std Black, and 420 stab. 1310 needs red fuse, so I have to buy the one. What fuse size did you use? Or what would you recommend for lightwind winging? I am 85kg, quite experienced in wing and wind foiling.

I prefer the ultrashort fuse because its still very pitch stable and pumps great but gives much better maneuverability than the longer sizes

Yes, definitely 👍 unless you are over 90 kg, in which case i would recommend the 475, or the 425 if you are much under 70kg. Weight makes a big difference, especially in light wind

Super helpful content as always! A used PNG 1300 was just posted in the States and I am tempted. As long as there is 10 knots of wind I will probably go for my ART 1099. Be nice to fly in less wind and I have not yet got around to upgrading my Light wind foil gear. I am now down to 72 kg and have the 82cm 19mm aluminum mast. I could likely get into downwinding or foot pump foiling but right now I am not doing much of eather ... just focusing on Wingfoiling. Any thoughts on the 1300 vs 1310 for light wind Wing Foiling? At my weight is the 82cm mast OK for now with the 1310? Is there a big difference in max speed, efficency, manuvarability and fun factor between the 1300 /1310 once in flight? Thanks Dominic for any pre advice and I look forward to your next compairison video.

Unless you're getting the high modulus mast I really wouldn't recommend the 1310 without it for winging. The 19mm ali mast is just too flexible for such a big foil, it flexes when you don't want it to and bucks you off, and it's really wobbly at speed. For winging in super light wind there's nothing better than the 1310 (as long as you've got the HM mast) but for downwinding I still prefer the 1300 as it has much better speed and glide which is needed. IMO the 1310 is too slow and cumbersome for downwinding, but for winging in super light wind there's nothing to beat it.

Dominic, one more question: do you know how the 1310 compares to the new 1201 in terms of lift in super light winds, and perhaps in other ways as well? Have you tried the 1201 yet?
@dominichoskyns9091
@dominichoskyns9091 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I was involved in the testing for the 1201 so I know it well. I'm in the process of putting together a video review of it right now. It doesn't have the same low end lift of the 1310 (nothing does) - in fact it's a very different beast. It has good lift (nearly as low as the 1050) but once on foil it's super fast for a foil of it's size, and it's glide is out of this world. It turns very well for it's size, but performs best with an advance fuse. Great low end, amazing top end - huge range. Sits between the 1310 and the 1050. My favourite foil for pumping, downwinding in small swell and winging in 10-14 knots (below 10 knots i would use the 1310)

@@Fjordjumper i think the 1310 would be best if you have wind always around 10 knots and under. If your wind is consistently over 10 knots (averaging 12 knots) then the 1201 will be fine. Also bear in mind that the 1310 really needs the high modulus mast as the aluminium mast just isn’t stiff enough to cope with it. Although the 1201 benefits from using the HM mast, you can still use the 19mm ali mast with it fine

Is the carbon mast essential for light wind or can alu be fine?
@dominichoskyns9091
@dominichoskyns9091 2 жыл бұрын
For the 1310 I would definitely recommend the high modulus carbon mast as it really does create a lot of flex on the ali mast. All the other foils are fine on the ali mast but once you order the high modulus carbon mast you realise that even the 19mm ali mast has some flex, especially with the foils with a wide wingspan. Basically, if you want the 1310 I would say the HM mast is necessary, and once you've got it it makes all your other foils perform better, but if you don't have the 1310 then it's not a problem

Why is the HM such important on the 1310? My idea would be the 75cm Alu.
@dominichoskyns9091
@dominichoskyns9091 Жыл бұрын
The 1310 has a huge wingspan and wide chord. This means it causes the mast to flex a lot. The HM mast is much more stiff than the aluminium mast so it doesn't flex as much, so it gives you much better control. I have ridden the 1310 with both aluminium and HM masts and the difference is huge

I have the 375p, the 420s, and the 440. Should I use the 440 when the wind is totally sketchy? when the wind is above marginal, should I use the 375 or the 420? Best guess if you haven’t tried these yet on the 1310.

300 + shim? Don’t want to own many stabs
@dominichoskyns9091
@dominichoskyns9091 2 жыл бұрын
I've played around with shims in the past but I don't bother anymore as they are always a compromise. Generally speaking, if you raise the trailing edge of the stab you get more lift but more drag so it slows you down. It also gives a little bit better maneuverability. If you raise the leading edge of the stab it increases speed but decreases lift. I'm not sure that doing this reduces maneuverability because you can't turn as tight when going fast, but it's worth mentioning. TBH you only really need two progressive stabs to cover nearly all situations. The 400 & 300 let's you focus your performance for either pump power or maneuverability. If you're into dock starting and distance flat water pumping then increase the size of the big stab. Depending on your weight and skill level you can move those two sizes up if you're +90kg, or go down for smaller sizes if you're -70kg
A HUGE foil that opens up so many options
