The thing I like best about learning from Mas Ayoob is that rather than just saying "do this", he explains why you might want to use the technique, but then goes on to explain why it may not be best for everyone. He has an excellent presentation on this channel regarding thumb positions in handgun firing which is the best I've ever seen.

Agree Tom, His video on different thumb positions is great. I have been shooting with the same thumb down grip for over 35 years. It served me well in countless IPSC and USPSA matches. What chaffs my hide is when some young blood comes to the range and wants to correct my stance and grip, not knowing how many ribbons and trophies I have. If Col. Cooper and Mr. Awerbuck didn't have a problem with my grip I won't be changing it now for some kid.

The wedge helped me a lot with overcompensating for the recoil when quick firing. I know it's not for everyone, but it sure helped keep my shots tight.

I've been shooting almost my entire life. This is the first time I've really understood how special the wedge grip can be controlling lateral movement. All my instructors usually just say, "pull that trigger straight back." Nobody ever says, "Let's change grip and get better control of the trigger guard." Mr Ayoob, you are amazing!

I am an 80 year old shooter and have been blessed to have been shooting for over 70 years. (Thanks Dad.). I now fight the dual issues of arthritis and neuropathy which make my hands tire quickly when shooting. I have found that my first shots in a session are typically right where I want them. But, after about 5 rounds my hands begin to tire and things deteriorate quickly with shots drifting low and left. I actually discovered this hold by experimentation over a couple of years as my hand issues began to worsen. Even though my hands still tire and I have to stop after 10 rounds or so to let my hands recover, now, with the wedge hold, I can keep all ten shots where I want them to be (with the occasional flyer which always sneaks in). I have discussed this with younger shooters and they simply do not get it, since they have not experienced the issues I have. Now, after seeing this video numerous times to reinforce what I am doing, I am a firm believer. My primary handgun for the range can be one of several Beretta 92s, a Sig p226 or CZ75 SP01 and this technique works well for all. When I switch to a 1911, I have to modify the grip slightly. Another excellent video from a master teacher. As an aside, I was a college dean in my working years and had to evaluate many teachers. I would give Massad my highest recommendation for tenure.

Sucks when you get older, doesn't it? I have arthritic shoulders with calcified tendons, as well as peripheral neuropathy. I can get through about 100 rounds at the range before I start thinking about quitting - and that's including down time to change the target every 2 magazines (outdoor range)! So, anything, like this wedge grip (especially with my PPK/S) that gets me a few more shots downrange is worth the effort.

I agree. I'm a new shooter, with only 6 range trips under my belt. The only grip I've known about till just this moment has been the wrap-around. It works fine for the 1911, but not so much on the PPK. This just may be the answer I'm looking for for the PPK!

This is the probably the best instructional video on handgun grip that I've seen. Presentation was calm and collected, not some internet commando trying to jam one particular style down the viewer's throat. He also takes into account the different factors that may affect a shooter's ability to utilize a particular grip on a particular gun (i.e. hand size, frame size, length of the trigger guard), which most videos of this kind completely ignore. Very well done.

I first read Mr. Ayoob's work as a teenager back in the early 80's in "Handgunner" magazine in England. It's rare that I see some of his work and don't learn at least a little snippet of goodness. I've been training at a few schools and only one brought up the wedge they called it the hook it is a variation of the wedge. It is the 1st time I've ever heard of something like that and has functioned extremely well for me on most of my firearms the 1911 being the exception. I love how old thought is now new thought and the trainers from back in the day are re gifting this knowledge to the trainers of to day thanks again for the additional information I will give it a shot

I changed to this grip because I had trouble shooting 45 ACP accurately through a 1911 (even though I could do relatively well with 9mm). I am pleased to say that it has helped me considerably. I’m still no expert marksman, but at least now I’m confident I could put shots on target in the unlikely event of a home-defense situation. Thanks Mr. Ayoob!

Great technique --during COVID unfortunately less range time due to ammo restraints and try to fire about 1,000 laser rounds at multiple targets weekly. Some of my guns I natural did this technique based on excellent comments Massad articulated so well! Other guns, not so much.... stayed with typical “rap around,” which was drilled into me by various LEOs I’ve worked for. I’ve also learned throughout the decades of Government training..... when in Rome you better do as other Romans.... LEOs typically were “my way or the highway,:” once you finish training - we always picked the right tool for the tool box and really like they way Mr. Ayoob makes that clear right up front. This dude is the best there is. I remember as a kid what a legend he was but I was too immature to really listen and learn. Also, there was no KZbin back then! We had these crazy things called gun magazines, but made of paper that you didn't put rounds in (I know it sounds crazy, no worries). After 35 years of shooting handguns I still find gems like this. The way Mas Ayoob explains things is so succinct. If you listen closely every single angle is covered, and if you follow through with the advice as it is presented you will see that this is decades of experience at the top tier of the art speaking.

I have been utilizing this technique since first watching this video and it has improved my accuracy and consistency guide a bit. I have found that an added benefit at least for me has been consistently finding the red dot on an optic without having to search for it the dot always appears right in the middle of the window upon drawing ant pushing out. When you have someone who teaches like he does the subject does not matter because you will learn more, become better, and understand faster as well on a deeper level. I was taught several different grips through the military. Although they tried to push the wrap around through basic I learned from some SF guys the others and my shooting improved immensely. Back in 1973 when I started on the Police Department, our local Highway Patrolman (one hell of a nice guy) was the State Police Shooting Champ. He went on to go to work for Smith and Wesson. He taught me basic handgun when I was issued my first handgun, a Smith and Wesson Modal 19 4". This was the hold he showed me, and the hold I have used ever since. In our Department the scores were posted after every qualifications. Mine was always in the top 3, often the top of the list, I believe it was all because of his wonderful, patient instruction. Prior to that all I had been shooting was the M1911A1 while in the Army and I was fairly good with the old war horse but much of the instruction from Army instructors still taught the one hand hold, and the point from the hip stuff that nobody much hit anything using. After I purchased my first M1911A1 and began qualifying with her, I quickly went to the two hand hold with the finger on the guard because it was comfortable and when I switched to the Sig 220 I kept that hold and still qualified at the top of our list. I guess Mr. Bill Gates really knew how to teach.

Having watched and listened, I put this into practice this morning on the range. Pretty much as Massud explains it. Took a couple of magazines to get the feel of this grip. By the third magazine, it came naturally. Pulled in all shots to a ping-pong sized group from 12m . Was very impressed. Will continue to work on it a few more range visits and see how I adapt to it. I can not thank you enough! The wedge solves my long-time frustration with gripping a gun. My problem is residual weakness in my shoulder, arm and wrist due to a stroke 15+ years ago. Two things have contributed to major improvement in my shot placement accuracy, so well in fact, I can place 100yd shots consistently on a paper plate. The first was to tighten my two hand grip and slightly relax my arm muscles. The second was to incorporate the wedge with my index finger. I'm at 500+ rounds using these adjustments and enjoy the comfortable accuracy improvement that keeps me trying faster/further shots. Thanks for keeping the legacy of accurate shooting alive.

Recently I developed shaky hands induced by medicine. My Red Dot was jittering all over the place. This wedge technique stabilized the dot more than I could have imagined in dry fire. I can't wait to get to the range next to see what my groups look like. Thank you for this!
