Triumph set at the 83 US Festival is one of the all time great live performances. They absolutely stole the show that day and the same stage that same night had Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Scorpions, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osborne, Joe Walsh... And TRIUMPH was by far the BEST!!! Also, these guys are the most underrated band ever. Massive talents, massive techniques and some of the most positive uplifting messages in lyrics. A really good rabbit hole to go down. You wont regret a second spent getting in it.

Triumph headlined arenas in the 80s, they were not underrated or underappreciated. They had a solid career. They have been forgotten a little over the years for some reason, I think it's because they predated the MTV/hair band thing of the late 80s, so a lot of that generation were never exposed to them. Triumph was basically done by the Thunder Seven album...

Triumph is one of the most underrated band in RnR history. They are part of the Canadian Invasion into Rock along with April Wine, BTO, Rush, Lover Boy, Toronto, Prism, The Guess Who and of course, Bryan Adams. Rik Emmet's voice is absolutely golden. Good reaction comparing Geddy Lee and Emmet. Different bands but very similar high voices. Emmet is now fighting cancer . . . so . . . FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT

I was at this concert. Sunday, May 29, 1983, Devore, California. I just turned 17 about a week before. I was about 15 to 20 people from the front on the bass players side of the stage. The lineup that day was Quiet Riot, Mötley Crüe, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Triumph, Scorpions and Van Halen closed out the night. A three day festival, the first day being new wave music and the last day just rock ‘n’ roll music. This was day two heavy metal day, there were approximately 375,000+ metalhead rocking out in the desert of San Bernardino county. Day one and day three did not have that many attendees combined. One of the best concerts of my life and definitely the biggest party I’ve ever been to in my life. Triumph was by far the best band that day in my opinion, followed by Judas Priest and the Scorpions. Watch any song from this set and you will fully enjoy them. Triumph is probably one of the most underrated bands in rock ‘n’ roll.

When I was a disc jockey on my college radio station in the late 1980s, I played a lot of Triumph. A few years ago, I wrote a letter to lead singer Rik Emmett and he sent me an autographed photo.

BUT Rick and company had amazing songs and moments of their own ❤ the festival was a big 80's moment put together by the APPLE co founder Steve Wozniak, the concert happened in San Bernardino at the Glen Halen Park, w estimated crowd of 670,000 people over the weekend !!!!

YES!!!! Triumph!! One of the greatest bands of the last 40 years, yet, seemingly, obscure to the point of incredulity...BUT, not to us Canuckleheads!!! All these decades later, and I still listen to this band almost everyday...and, yet, I'm not sure if that's enough! Not only are they inductees in both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame & Legends Row, but also Canada's Walk of Fame,,,AND, they are generous to a fault, having donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to various worthy charities. Rik Emmetts' departure from the band in 1988 effectively marked the end of their peak years, BUT, his first solo album was a success, yielding 4 hits here in Maple Leaf Land. I hope, Stacey, that you, someday check out some of his singles. It's sad that, today, he is fighting cancer, having lost my father to it, and seeing my nephew, currently, battling with it, too...best of blessings to him and all those similarly suffering....may you forever fight the good fight.

Correct... like Rush, Triumph were from Canada and a rock trio formed in the 70's, the band being - Rik Emmett (guitar/ vocals), Gil Moore (drums/ vocals) and Mike Levine (bass/ keyboards)... They debuted in 1976 (2 years after Rush) and found success by 1979 w/ the hit single - 'Lay it on the line'... from their 3rd album 'Just a game'... 'Fight the good fight'... became a hit single in 1981 from their 5th album 'Allied Forces'... as Triumph became a huge arena rock band in the early 80's w/ a number of gold/ platinum selling albums ... However, there were conflict musically by 1986 - their 8th album 'The Sport of Kings' had a commercial sound w/ the single "Somebody's out there"... and failed to sell commercially. After the release of their 9th album 'Surveillance' in 1987, which was another commercial failure, Rik Emmett (guitar/ vocals) left Triumph in 1988 and attempted a solo career. Triumph recruited Phil X (guitar) and Gil Moore did all the vocals for their last album 'Edge of Excess' in 1992... It failed miserably in the grunge rock 90's era and Triumph called it quits in 1993. Years later, Phil X (guitar) replaced guitarist Richie Sambora in Bon Jovi since 2013. Triumph reunited the original line-up (Emmett/ Moore/ Levine) for 2 final shows in 2008... One was recorded for a live CD/DVD release - 'Live at Sweden Rock festival' in '08. In 2021, Triumph was featured in a career documentary movie - 'Triumph: Rock & Roll Machine'... which included interviews and past footage, as well as the band performing 3 songs together in 2019... All 3 members have insisted that Triumph has no plans to do anything else.

That's a great point, that it was like a wall was broken open in that period. Maybe it was in part due to Rush, but it was tough to get discovered i the US when you were playing in Canada. Once Rush did a US tour I think that might have opened things up. I was just trying to think of others for that list but all I came up with was Aldo Nova. I know there was a bunch more though.

I love Triumph because their music is very positive and just makes you feel good. That’s nothing to say of the immense talent in the band. They should have been bigger in the U.S. because they were big everywhere else, especially in the home nation of Canada. You really should check out the rest of this performance.

The song really came alive when they went into that first guitar solo with the drums, bass and lead guitar all demanding their own spot light. Great performance! You found them! Triumph had been one of my favorite all time bands since I first heard them around 1979. Rik Emmett is a guitar god and as you heard, is an incredible singer. The drummer, Gil Moore also sings lead on many songs. Other songs you must hear from this same concert with Rik singing: Fight The Good Fight, Lay It On The Line, Never Surrender (my favorite) and Magic Power. With Gil singing: When The Lights Go Down, Allied Forces and Rock And Roll Machine (which features Rik’s extended guitar solo. Then, there are tons more album deep cuts to hear, like Ordinary Man, American Girls, Hot Time (In The city Tonight), Tear The Roof Off, Natures Child, Just A Game, All The Way, Rock Out, Roll On, Stranger In A Strange Land and many, many others

The Triumph are a kick-ass Canadian Power💥 trio! Believe me, I've been following them since 1980 and I'm still crazy about their music ❤‍🔥. I own a lot of vinyl (bought when I was a kid) and now CDs and it's always a pleasure to listen to them. Rik Emmett is an inexplicably 🤔underrated guitarist 🎸(as is the whole trio🤨). Totally underrated. I graduated HS in '81. Triumph opened for your beloved Geddy Lee and all I kept hearing was "Are you going to Rush, Are you going to see Rush?" Got back to school come Monday morning and all people asked me was, " "Did you see Triumph, did you see Triumph?" I was told they blew Rush away. Half the crowd left before Rush came on. I can only believe 'm after seeing Halifax Nova Scotia concert of '87.

This was a trip way back to high school. Triumph crushed it at the US Festival. They were a tragically underrated band that was somewhat lost in the shadows of Rush. To me they were the bridge of the 70s into the 80s rock

Triumph and Rush, both trios, both masterclass virtuosos, both from Canada, both winning accolades and awards, both with many gold, platinum and multi platinum record sales, both considered one of the best live bands ever, both classified as multi-genre hard rock, heavy metal, prog metal, Both with all members multi-faceted in their band roles playing multiple instruments or playing instruments and singing (drummer for Triumph is also a back-up singer as is Alex Lifeson from Rush), both my two favorite bands, Rush and Triumph respectively. And I was a fan of both before I knew both were trios and from Canada and has so much in common. Though in later years Triumph did bring another guitarist on-board creating a fab-four. You have been given further suggestions below of several of their most famous songs, but also, just like Rush, they have many deep-cut songs that are also great songs, even if they didn't make the industry billboard top 40 or 100 or whatever. So the song I will suggest, one of my personal favorites, and rarely reacted too (I actually cannot find a reaction video to this song), a song titled 'Battle Cry.'

We rented this video for this whole festival show back in the 90's and triumph was by far the best band on that video. Rock and roll machine is another great live song from this show. Rick Emmit is the high pitched singer and guitar player and he is excellent at both.

Triumph is a very underrated band. I have been a Triumph fan since their second album Rock and Roll Machine. Saw them several times. Rik Emmett is gotta be the best frontman, singer and guitar player of any band that I know. Great singer and great guitar player which is rare to be that good at both skills. The drummer Gil Moore was also a great singer. He sang many of their songs. Definitely worth a trip down the Triumph rabbit hole.

Blew every band including Van Halen off the stage on this day. Was fortunate enough to see these 3 GREAT GREAT musicians 4 times during their peak. Loudest band I've ever seen with crystal clear vocals and pitch perfect musicianship. If Eddie Van Halen & Steve Perry had a baby it would be Rik Emmett. Triumph is my favorite Canadian band. Magic Power & Lay It On the Line are also musts from this show. Their album Allied Forces is EPIC but IMO their album Just A Game is a 100% PERFECT album. I grew up in the same area as these guys and see Gil Moore once in a while at his Studio at Metal Works, they are extremely underrated because they're Canadian. Them and Rush rented a house on Dixon Road just before they made it big as they were 16 years old at the time. The white house now has been knocked down and a plaza has been built over it. Just making a point that the two bands did evolve as friends

I had to 'click' for thinking this might be the US Festival '83 vid....and it is. I was there for my 21st b-day. That was a good lineup for 'Metal Day.' Triumph, Judas Priest, and Scorpions were the best preforming Live that day out of them all. Yet Van Halen headlined and they were not as sharp as they were the year before...when I saw them in '82. LOL...both RUSH and Triumph are from Canada, too. There were 350k people there...my first concert, Cal Jam 2, also had 350k people at it.

When the MetalWorks Studio first opened up (by owner Gil Moore from Triumph) and they started renting out studio time to other bands, I had a chance to meet Rik and Gil (the band was still active at that time and sorta getting along). Rik was playing about on an acoustic in the lounge playing a classical music composition and that's when I saw he was too good for just rock ballads. FYI. Rik is like really short in height, it was kinda strange to see one of my Rock Gods stand up to shake my hand but only came up chest high :) super nice guy. Gil is just awesome, you could ask him ANYTHING about music and the biz...He's also a total pyromaniac, if he could safely set off a nuke for a show ending, he would!

I was a 22 year old young man in the crowd that day. US Festival "Heavy Metal Day". The headliner was the Mighty Van Halen. The lineup of bands that day was ridiculous. Great time,,,Great memories🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

Triumph was definitely underrated. I saw them about a year before this performance. What you noted about their quality performing being as good or better than the studio recording is absolutely accurate. I saw them the one time and their Canadian counterparts, Rush twice. Rush was awesome, but Triumph was perfect live. Rik hits every note and drummer Gil Moore sounded great when he sang lead as well. All three are top notch in their playing.

I’ve seen many rock concerts in my life. These are still one of my favs! Three guys….huge sound….virtuous musicians…..criminally underrated….Canadian too boot. Hard to find a better guitar player/vocalist in rock.

Very underrated! First concert I ever saw, and the second concert was Rush! The 2 best concerts I've ever seen. Both concerts were over 40 years ago and I've never forgotten them!

I was fortunate enough to see this performance live at the US Festival in 83. Triumph was definitely a standout for me. It was an amazing weekend of constant music and partying, It was hot in San Bernardino Regional Park. It was put on by the cofounder of Apple Computer, Steve Wozniak ~ 670,000 in attendance. I could vividly picture my exact location in the crowd watching this reaction. Thanks for the memory

Definitely my favorite Triumph song. Rik Emmett wrote this song inspired by his Aunt who was fighting cancer at the time. I believe Rik's voice may be similar to Getty Lee's but not as shrill. They're both amazing but I do prefer Rik Emmett.

Great reaction to a great band yet again))) If I remember right, Triumph came out with their fisrt album in '75, about a year after Rushes first album came out in 1974 I believe. Both bands are from Canada, back in in the day Canada spewed talent..I can't even count the bands that came from Canada...Triumph have soooo many great songs from Lay it On The Line, Movin' On, Hold On, Rock & Roll Machine just to name a few....Gil Moore ( The drummer) also sings on a few songs but Rik Emmet is the primary singer, Mike Levine is bad ass on bass/ keyboards....I would also suggest checking outHold On, Lay It On The Line, Movin' On, & Rock& Roll Machine for now, more later))) Keep up the good work Stace, you got tons of great teachers to guide you through your journey(including me))

Triumph is one of the best bands to ever come out of Canada and both Rik Emmett (Guitar) and Gil Moore (Drums) have excellent voices and sing lead on different songs. The album this song came off of is called Allied Forces and literally every song on it is excellent. There is zero filler.

This concert was the 1983 US Festival in San Bernardino, California. It’s about an hour drive east of Los Angeles, towards the desert. It was about 95 degrees that day in September with heavy smog. The lineup for heavy metal Sunday that day was insane. They had all these legendary bands that day, and yet Triumph topped them all as far as performances go.

Triumph is one of my favorites, as are many of the previously mentioned Canadian bands. One missed was Red Rider, “Lunatic Fringe” is a classic and super relevant today. Further south in Texas you’ll find another powerhouse, three piece, in ZZ Top. I’m partial to the earlier albums, but the ‘80’s were their biggest commercial success.

Triumph was my 1st concert. They had an amazing light show. Green talking head made of smoke and lasers hovering above the crowd. It wasn't all band supplied smoke either. EVERYBODY in that arena was stoned. You couldn't help but be. :-)

US Festival '83 in San Bernardino, Ca. I was there that day (the whole 3-day weekend, actually). They were definitely one of the highlights of the entire festival. I recently bought the commemorative vinyl double album of their set. Great memories!

The US Festival was a huge concert. So many major artists from the 80's. Four days I think. Triumph was incredible live. They never got as big as other artists but in Kansas City, they headlined the same venue as AC/DC, Rush, Van Halen....

Rik's nickname in high school was the rocket, he was a track star. The way he runs around the stage is epic! I met him in 1990, one of my idols being a Canadian guitar player. Very under rated!

GREAT reaction Stacey!! Who are they? Only another SPECTACULAR trio and band from Canada! Yes, parallels to Geddy Lee & Rik Emmett were plentiful. Where Ged excels at bass, Rik 'triumphs' (see what I did there) on guitars! Where Rush were the prog masters, Triumph stayed in the pure rock realm - nothing wrong with that, because they did it SO well. Their live shows were incredible (as you see/hear here!). They started in '75 - one year after Rush. They're certainly not underrated here in Canada. While the vocals are not the same (more akin to Jim Morrison of The Doors), I highly suggest another trio from Windsor, Ontario, Canada called The Tea Party! Songs like The River, Save Me, Temptation, Sister Awake. They're from the 90's, but they definitely channel the 70's rock vibe! All of these trios are from Ontario (Triumph - Mississauga, Rush -Toronto) - I don't know what's the in the musical water here, but it certainly favours the trios!

So underrated. I saw them in concert in 81 or 82. I felt just like you do in this reaction. Magic Power is a great song you should check out. Their lyrics always have good meaning. Riks voice is incredible. They are Canadian like Rush.
