The Sack of Rome, then part of the Papal States, followed the capture of Rome on 6 May 1527 by the mutinous troops of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, during the War of the League of Cognac. Charles V only intended to threaten military action to make Pope Clement VII come to his terms. However, most of the Imperial army (14,000 Germans, including Lutherans, 6,000 Spaniards and some Italians) were largely unpaid. Despite being ordered not to storm the city, they broke into the scarcely defended city and began looting, killing, and holding citizens for ransom without any restraint.[3] Clement VII took refuge in Castel Sant'Angelo after the Swiss Guard were annihilated in a delaying rear guard action; he remained there until a ransom was paid to the pillagers.

One of my favourite Sabaton songs, equally catchy and powerful. Fun fact: this song was the first song guitarist Chris Rörland co-wrote with Joakim. They co-wrote quite a few songs together later and I really hope it will continue on the next album too, they are an amazing team. Thanks for a great reaction as always

0:16 the cat wagging its tail 😅 This is based on the last stand of the Swiss Guard in 1527. The Roman emperor, Charles V, couldn’t pay the guards, so they decided to take what they thought was theirs and plunder Rome. At the end, when they entered the Vatican, they were slowed down by 189 Swiss guards who fought all the way to the altar in St. Peters. Forty-two of them managed to escape with Pope Clement the VII, though. The outnumbered Swiss Guard, protectors of the Vatican, stood against an invading horde during the Sack of Rome in 1527, giving their lives so the Pope could escape. Great reaction!

This event (as far as I know) is the reason that the Pope still uses Swiss guards to this day. Basically 189 Swiss Guards (mercenaries) made a last stand near Campo Santo Teutonico (a graveyard) while 42 other guards escorted Pope Clement VII through Passetto di Borgo, which connected the Vatican to Castel Sant'Angelo.
@PerStenback
@PerStenback 24 күн бұрын
You are correct in that it being the reason the Guard still guards the Pope. It is also the reason why their (Swiss guard) inauguration day are on May 6th, the anniversary day of the sack of Rome
@swissguy8052

In the event known as the Stand of the Swiss Guard, the Swiss, alongside the garrison's remaining soldiers, made their last stand in the Teutonic Cemetery within the Vatican. Their captain, Kaspar Röist, was wounded and later sought refuge in his house, where Spanish soldiers killed him in front of his wife.[7] The Swiss fought bitterly, but were hopelessly outnumbered and almost annihilated. Some survivors, accompanied by a band of refugees, fell back to the steps of St. Peter's Basilica. Those who went toward the Basilica were massacred, and only 42 survived. This group of 42, under the command of Hercules Goldli, managed to stave off the Habsburg troops pursuing the Pope's entourage as it made its way across the Passetto di Borgo, a secure elevated passage that connects the Vatican City to Castel Sant'Angelo.[7]

At 2:18 you see the bassplayer Pär having a blueyellow bass, the swedish colors 🇸🇪 But if you watch really carefull youll see 3 small crowns on it, its the national emblem of Sweden and the history of the Three Crowns are ancient. In fact more than ancient. The crowns represent the three crowned Gods of the Uppsala (mentioned in the show Vikings), the seat of a holy place, before the introduction of Christianity in Scandinavia. King Erik of Sweden (died 1160) is sometimes depicted together with the three crowns, and most every swedish king after him until today. Finally, the Stockholm Royal Castle built in the 13th century was named Tre Kronor (Three Crowns), but unfortunatelly it was burned down in 1697 where most of Sweden's national library and royal archives were destroyed making Swedens early history difficult to document. 😢 Yes, we swedes are history nerds 🇸🇪😉 Thanks again for this beautiful reaction ❤

The Last Stand of the Swiss Guard was a battle that took place on May 6, 1527, during the Sack of Rome: The battle 189 Swiss Guards formed a square around St. Peter's Basilica to protect Pope Clement VII and allow him to escape through secret tunnels. The guards held the doors until the Pope could make his escape. The outcome All but 42 of the guardsmen died, including their captain, Kaspar Röist. The Pope escaped through the Passetto di Borgo, an 800-meter-long secret passage that connected the Vatican to Castel Sant'Angelo. The significance The Swiss Guard's sacrifice is still remembered today, with new recruits traditionally sworn in on the anniversary of the battle. The Swiss Guard's loyalty and bravery are considered an enduring reminder. The Sack of Rome was an attack on the city by troops of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. The attack was an unprecedented war crime and had a significant impact on the city.

Warren Zevon (you reacted to "Werewolves of London") did one called "Veracruz" which is set in the US invasion of Mexico in 1914. Corb Lund has a good one called "Horse Soldier" Rasputina does one about "1816, The Year Without A Summer."

Sabaton wrote their album 'The last stand' in 2016... the concept being battles in which regimens of soldiers were outnumbered and ready to fight to the last man standing. The song 'The last stand' referred to the Sack of Rome in 1527 when a group of Swiss soldiers protecting the Pope were annihilated by the Holy Roman Emperor's troops, who were unpaid and disobeyed orders to attack Rome ... The Pope had to pay the pillagers a ransom to release him and the city.

I promise you've never heard anything like it and it will leave you speechless. It's so much more than just a song. It gives you a glimpse into a soul fighting for her life. Be prepared to experience this battle first hand. I don't have better words to adequately describe it. This work of art is so beautifully performed and yet hard to watch because it's not about someone telling a story about someone else's struggle, it's about someone who really seems to be fighting an enemy within himself as you watch. I've never seen anything so personal and brave and at the same time so artful. You simply have to have to have to watch it.
