You've done a great service to MJH. He was a true legend...unknown for so long until the blues explosion in the 60s. By then he was up there in age. Thankfully, there were recordings of him. A great example of musical genius who didn't have to rely on technology to be great. Well done!

Pretty challenging for a non-fingerstyle player, but a great lesson on a great song. And it's always worthwhile to develop a skill that taxes your brain/fingers. Finally, that big Harry Smith anthology is fantastic. That box set and the Velvet Underground's "Peel Slowly and See" are the only ones to have given me such a feeling of awe in knowing that I would be years digesting the music that I'd just discovered.

Hi Adrian, I've watching your channel for a while now and have always really enjoyed the very versatile content as well as your presentation. Just wanted to thank you and say how much I have enjoyed witnessing your development as well as all the very well thought out and precisely explained instructional material. I especially enjoyed your excursion into swing guitar ala Charlie Christian when you covered Rose Room! You did a very good job on that and I would love to see some more of that! Thanks again and I wish you one of the best years you have ever had! Cheers!

Thanks Cliff! I do like to keep things varied. It makes it interesting and challenging for me as well as - I hope - for viewers of this channel. I'll try and do a bit more swing or jazz later this year.

Thanks for posting. I've heard a lot of people do Staggerlee over the years and whether acoustic or electric, major chords or 7ths and bluesy, they all captured the basic vibe. You give a real nice lesson for this tune!

Oh man, you just continue to impress. I really love the range of music that you cover, it's very eclectic but every song is high calibre. Btw, the Clash mention the background story when they sing, "Stagger Lee met Billy, and they got down to gamb-e-ling" :)

I love Mississippi John Hurt, and this was a great choice. I still haven't gotten very far up the hill of learning fingerstyle, but this is another piece of motivation. Also I can't think of this song without thinking of Nick Cave's over-the-top take on it, but that's a very, very different animal.

I have tried unsuccessfully to emulate Mississippi John Hurt fingerstyle but can't quite get it down. On my own playlist, I play "Nearer, my God, to Thee," a john Hurt song frequently done by other fingerstyle players, but I need to work on it more to come close to blues style. Thanks for the video.

I really like this and very much appreciate the lesson, but I do want to ask the following: Why the capo on the first fret?? Does it help to use it for this particular song, versus other songs, or ??? Thank you.
@davegooner26 жыл бұрын
MJH often tuned his guitar up half a step up (or presumably used a capo on first fret) and the original is recorded at this pitch hence capo is needed to sound in pitch

Good lesson. I find fingerstyle quite difficult having played mostly with a pick for most of my playing career. I think it would take a major time commitment on my part. Ironically I can play guitar and harmonica together with no problem.
@davegooner26 жыл бұрын
It took me 2 weeks solid to learn the basics of fingerstyle over a Christmas break using a Happy Traum DVD about 15 years ago. I would recommend it to anyone. He starts very slowly building up the muscle memory to separate bass and melody. Best 2 weeks investment on the guitar you could imagine. It completely changed my enjoyment of the guitar and opened up so much new music to me. I am no virtuoso so I would think a similar investment in time would get you there. On the other hand I can't flat pick to save my life!

I can't fault the lesson. I only wish my picking technique was up to the challenge. Any chance of a lesson on finger picking exercises to get those skills up to speed and at the ready? (Or am I missing the point of the example you've just demonstrated?) Many thanks.
@cskueny6 жыл бұрын
I was trying to decide myself whether to attempt this as an utter beginner or go try some more easier finger picking first. This is a great motivator because such a great song, and also because it's taught by Adrian, but I guess there are some easier ones to master first. I'll try the first bar of this in any case!
@richarddavis74876 жыл бұрын
When I started, I focused on my thumb, keeping a beat while thumbing the bass notes over various chords. I've now worked bringing in a couple of fingers for the other notes. I'm still not where I want to be but can do some passable interpretations of lightning hopkins and son house. It's taking a while, but slow and steady wins the race.
@juicylucy57975 жыл бұрын
Keep at it, I couldn't do it either till I learned Mystery Train off Adrian and then it all fell into place. To learn this I just had to watch him play it once, and I could do it straight away. Learning to finger pick is the best thing I ever done! It has opened up a whole new world.
