Yes they did

@@AlexES64U2 Yep. The train at 3:45 is a former DLR P89. For operation in Essen, they were retrofitted with pantographs (instead of third-rail collectors) and driver's cabins. The system cannot be operated driverless, as a lot of legs of the network go overground at some point and share their space with other traffic. (the whole idea of the system - both in Essen and in neighboring cities - was to create a hybrid of trams in the outskirts and light-rail in downtown. As of today it's seen critically, because the maintenance costs for the tunnels are very high and they had to make a lot of compromises which made the service worse in the long run when they built the lightrail in the 1970s and 1980s. That is to say, the original overground tram lines, which the light-rail lines replaced, made much more sense logistically, while the layout the lightrail network uses was mostly guided by construction costs).

DE DUITSERS ZIJN RAAR MENSEN TOCH?
@wuloki4 жыл бұрын
@@talijahtalijah1258 The original tram lines use 1000m gauge, while the "new" (that is, 1970s and 1980s) light-rail lines use standard-gauge, 1435mm. You can see that quite often in Essen and neighboring cities. The original plan of the 1960s was to convert trams to "premetro", like in Brussels, and then build a "real subway". Due to political circumlocutions, this never happened, and the tunnel-sections eat a lot of money now. A lot of people nowadays think that the whole idea of putting tram lines underground was a very bad idea to begin with.
