If the manager already knew about the "unlawful sacking" elsewhere from these coins.....why are there zero signs up in this garage saying - we do not accept x,y, and z coins? They don't have to accept the coins BUT there have to be signs up warning customers, prior to refusal of a lawfully accepted coin. Could have saved himself what sounds like an oncoming heart attack from stress!

Agreed. They don't have to accept any form of payment but there is no legal obligation for me to pay in any other way unless there are clear terms of contract easily seen on every pump.

That is exactly what they must do if they don’t wish to accept that form of payment. It has to be clear as you say in every pump, not just say that won’t accept it. He certainly lost his head in the phone, heart attack waiting to happen.

​@@StellaAsh Yes, once the debt is taken on. If when taking on the debt you were effectively contractually obliged to make payments in another manner, then you must honour that contract. So if the pump says "we only accept (payment method)" then you must pay that way or a civil lawsuit will be taken against you to recover the debt.

Would the simple answer be,signage on each pumps stating the only accepted payment method, ie no commemorative coins accepted , card transactions only. It’s like me filling up my truck with a fuel card that it’s states on the pump not accepted. That then is my problem. If they don’t put signage up with accepted payment methods that becomes their problem. I realise that once you have the petrol there is a debt to be paid , however when you have filled up with petrol without the means to pay because the sign says no commemorative coins or pay by currency in circulation up to £20 notes or card only then you would be in the wrong, am I correct ?

I can only feel empathy for the judge dealing with the dismissal and having to listen to him ranting in a court room. I think I would have him sit in a cell so where for a month or two just for contempt. This would be fair because he clearly has contempt for customers who pay with cash, the issue of whether it is real cash, not everyday cash or not the cash he will accept is poppycock because it is legal tender in the form of cash, issued by the very same organisation that issues all cash.
