Even if using older amps, a custom cable can be made to have multiple plugs in parallel. Due to cable size and the connectors, a smaller diameter wire can be used so 2 wires can go into each plug. As this is not to be used anywhere but the amp rack, this can be left installed in the amp rack. As far as "overloading the Mixer or outboard output" this is not a concern as the input impedance for most amps is about 10,000 ohms and the output of the console is typically 600 Ohms or less, most often about 200 ohms. Fan out to up to about 10 amps causes no problems. 10 amps in parallel with 10K input would then be 1K at the imput which is no problem for most equipment. The cable would have 1 input and 4 output connectors chained together all in a parallel custom length to be tidy in the amp rack. Read your amp specs to find the actual input resistance.

Hi-Thank You for all of the informative videos you have posted over the years...Where would a distribution amp - like a Drawmer DA6 (6 stereo/12 mono) - be placed in a signal chain? Would it be something like Board Out(s) -> Distribution Amp -> Power Amps -> PA Speakers? I understand that only speakers should be connected to power amps .I know that you're not actually amplifying power. Hopefully you would do a video explaining the correct setup.

@@stageleftaudio Gee,What took you so long to reply?lol😉 With this video being an older post,I figured either no reply or maybe awhile before any response.I always wondered how all the amp racks and speakers at an arena/stadium concert were connected.Like a lot of people,I used to think that when daisy-chaining amps,you were 'multiplying' the power.But then,after awhile, that didn't make sense to me because of the ohm load that would be placed on the amps from connecting all the speakers together.Thanks to this video,I now understand that you're running the SAME SIGNAL to a bunch of amps,then the speakers are hooked up to the individual amps. I've looked at the Drawmer manual(pdf) but it wasn't clear as to where the DA would be in the signal chain.And connecting a distro amp after the power amps would certainly 'fry' a DA.I don't own a DA6 - it's the only one I could think of at the moment to use as an example. If you only have XLR inputs, a "Y" cable can be used. Basically, the "Y" cable will allow you to connect the signal (from the mixer) to 2 amplifiers.

Daisy chaining works with most amplifiers that have 1/4" and/or XLR connectors. It may not work with the CTS line of amps from Crown, because those series of amps usually have different input (and output) connectors. Something like a signal distribution unit (with connectors that support the CTS line) may be needed.

In this video, all we are doing is connecting the channel #2 output/input to the channel #1 input on the next amplifier. The amplifiers in this particular video are setup for parallel operation (meaning channel #1 and channel #2 will be producing the same signal as each other). All we are doing sending the same signal to the next amp, and using that amplifiers channel inputs (on channel #2) as outputs to the next amplifier. All amplifiers will receive the same signal. The cables I'm using in it show that it doesn't matter if you have a 1/4" or XLR cable... both types can be used to send the signal from one amplifier to the next.

There's a lot of variables involved with what you are needing to do. Though, with what you just mentioned about placing the amps in mono and daisy chaining; this would probably work for your setup as long as mono is acceptable for you.

Not really. Mixing consoles increase the voltage for amplifiers, so the amplifiers can do their job.

The setup in this video is for mono sound. In this video, we used the Left output from the console. There is nothing connected to the Right output of the console. The cable coming from the console to the first amplifier is an XLR cable. Hope this helps.

Most will use a "Y" cable. The "long" end of the cable connects into the mixer output; one side of the Y connects into the QSC, the other into the Crown.

ignacio jr bueno When you pull an XLR connector apart, all you need to do is cut the wire for pin #1 and fold one side of the wire back (so it doesn't unfold back onto the wire you just cut); then reassemble the XLR connector.. Or... some people actually pull the #1 pin out of the connector. "pulling pin #1" is a common phrase. How it's actually done can vary. Very IMPORTANT - make sure you know which pin is #1. Look straight into the end of the XLR cable, you should "1" "2" "3" These are the pin numbers. Make sure you select pin #1.

+Mark Euglin A lot of professional amplifiers support parallel connections; therefore, allowing daisy-chaining. I don't think all amplifiers support this feature. I recommend checking the manufactures manual for the particular amplifier(s) you may be interested in to see if they support daisy chaining. Thanks for your comment.

Jamial Black Thanks for watching. Correct, the GX series cannot be bridged. And for many amplifiers, they don't need to be in parallel mode. Daisy chaining stereo amplifiers does work, as long as there is a parallel input associated with the input you are working with (i.e. the inputs on the GX series has XLR and 1/4" for each channel). For example, if you connect an XLR cable into the XLR input of channel "A", that same signal will be paralleled with the 1/4" input of the same channel. Then to daisy chain another amp, insert a 1/4" cable into channel "A" of the amp you already have the XLR cable connected to, and connect the other end of the 1/4" cable to the input (of channel "A") on another amplifier. Repeat the steps for channel "B" and then for how ever many amplifiers you need to send the signal to. If you want channel "B" of the amp(s) to have the same signal as channel "A" (like you can with parallel mode), try using a "Y" connector to connect the same signal from your board to the first amp. Then, when you daisy chain the amps (both "a" and "b" side), they will both be amplifying the same signal.

In this example (from the video), the speaker connections would be for a bridged mono setup. So, this means that each amplifier in the video would have only one speaker attached to it - for a bridged operation. Therefore, there would be 4 speakers used (each speaker powered by its own amplifier). Yes, any amplifier (or group of non-like amplifiers) can be used... as long as they have an input and a "thru" output connector that will allow the signal to be passed to another amplifier.

As long as the XLS amplifiers have two inputs per channel, they can be daisy changed. Some of the XLS amps have something called "Link out"; it's a 1/4" output on the amp. This output is used to send the signal to the next amp. If the amplifiers don't have 2 connections per channel, the signal can be passed from one amp to another using a series of "y" cables.

You can daisy-chain (run parallel connections) for speakers, but you may need to limit the number of parallel speaker connections to two per channel on the amplifier. What's important is the load the amplifier sees on each channel; check the manufactures spec sheet to see what the limit is for the amplifier you are using.

As long as the cooling fans are functioning correctly in the amps, you rarely need to place a space between them. Spacing amps apart is usually for amps that do not have cooling fans.

I would never recommend the use of a gadget to cover up a grounding issue. If a ground loop hum is occurring due to an electrical grounding issue in an amplifier rack, the grounding issue needs to be fixed/corrected... not covered up.

In this video, the amplifiers were set for "bridged" operation. Like many amplifiers, when setting them in "bridged" mode, they will automatically be placed in "parallel" mode (i.e. duplicating the input signal on channel-1 to the input on channel-2). For the PLX series, parallel mode simply allows for one signal to be brought into an amplifier (i.e. channel 1) and have that signal automatically be produced on the input of channel 2. With the same signal appearing at the inputs of channel-2, that signal can be daisy-chained out of channel and into channel-1 of the next amplifier.

@@stageleftaudio you do realize that when you run an amp in bridged mono mode, it inverts ch 1 polarity to ch 2 polarity. You CAN do this, if you invert your outputs OR use the amps outputs in bridged output mode (using the + terminal on both channels, ch 1+ for speaker + and ch 2+ as speaker -) If you don't do this, you will have 2 speaker loads operating out of phase with each other. The correct way to do what you are demonstrating would be to run the amplifiers input stages in parallel mode, not bridged mono mode.

Howard Smith Thanks for watching. You are correct. Daisy chaining cleans up and reduces the amount of "overhead" in sending the same signal to multiple amplifiers. For example, in a bi/tri amped system, all FOH needs is to send back 2 or 3 cables depending if you are bi/tri amping; one cable for each frequency band. Though, if you are running true stereo, you would need to double the cables from the crossover to the amps.

I have two sub speakers with one input running them mono. I have one QSC 2450 running both speakers but it's not enough power. I want to daisy chain another 2450 and run them in bridge mode to power each speaker separately. Where do I plug each speaker? Any guidance here would be helpful...

First... take a look at the manual for the 2450. Basically, set your amp to bridge mode (using the dip switches on the rear); next, you connect one speaker (i.e. 1 speaker wire) to the binding posts (if using binding posts). But, look at the back of the amp where the binding posts are. They show you that you must use the 2 center posts - the "+" posts (of both binding posts) to connect a speaker if the amp is bridged. Then connect an XLR cable from the input of channel "2" of the amp, and connect that XLR to the input of channel "1" on the next amp (like in the in the video). If you are using a speakon speaker cable, those must be wired differently to support the bridge operation of an amplifier.

What is a ground loop between amplifiers?

It's a ground-loop (60hz hum) situation that usually occurs between FOH and the stage, but sometimes occurs between amplifiers driving the same signal. For the amplifiers: This occurs when 2 amplifiers are each connected to their own power source (i.e. separate circuits) and their signal inputs are daisy chained together with a balanced (aka TRS) cable. The balanced signal cable between the amplifiers may cause a ground loop. To remedy this, use a ground-lift cable between the amplifier inputs/outputs.

If all 4 of the amps were driven to their full power, it would trip a breaker. In fact, 2 amplifiers at full power will probably trip a breaker. ampers x voltage = max-wattage. Therefore, a 15amp circuit running on 120 volts will support a maximum of 1800 watts. You can plug all 4 amps into a single 15amp circuit, but do not run them at their maximum.

Basically, do not turn up the volume so much that the amplifiers begin to distort (or cause speaker distortion). Or, if there are limiter (or power) lights on the amplifier... make sure neither of these are flashing (i.e. showing the amplifier is reaching its limit).

Correct. Also to note, short distances (usually less than 2 ft.) using unbalanced connections do not present issues. However, if using balanced connections anywhere in the routing of a sound system, it is recommended to use balanced connections everywhere in the system.

Hypothetical situation.....How many amps could be daisy chained without signal loss to the inputs? I think these amps probably have10k unbalanced/20k balance input impedance, so just wondering provided you have the proper power available. Also does that 1/4 inch need to be TRS?

+cacornett58 Good question. The most I've seen "chained" is 12 per side for FOH (QSC Powerlight amps). There may be a limitation, but seems like it would be high enough, that it would not present any issues for most setups. For short jumps (amp to amp in the same rack), TS cables work fine. If you are chaining amplifiers in separate racks (over 20' away), you will probably want to use TRS. We try to use all TRS cables for every 1/4" connection in our system; it's easier to manage the cables if they are all the same.

+Jonathan Malta I'm not familiar with the amps, but make sure some of the basic things are not causing the problem. Look at the filter switches on the back - make sure they are all set the same for both amps (depending on how you are using your amps). If the amps should not be bridged, make sure both amps are set in "stereo" mode. If you need to make changes on the amps, make sure to make these changes with the amplifiers OFF. If the settings on the amps are all the same, how are the levels of the amplifiers when they are not daisy chained? Do they exhibit the same behavior?

Normally, no ground lift switches are needed when daisy chaining. The only reason you may need to use a ground lift cable (or switch), is when the power amplifiers that you are daisy chaining are getting power from different sources. The PLX amps in this video do not have ground-lift switches.

Noise in a system can easily come from bad/inferior cables, or using unbalanced cables, and sometimes from a passive crossover. Older crossovers (depending on much they have been used) can start exhibiting behavior similar to ground-loops. The cheapest and quickest check would be the cables. Also, make sure there is no oxidation on the cables or the insert points of the crossover. Oxidation causes issues with contact points.

@@stageleftaudio I'll check it out see what's going on with it I know it's in the 1 rack and not the rest of the system must be a bad cable because I wiggled it and then everything went back to normal probably the xlr plug on the end of it had a bad cable in my other rack that was making noise running my 5002vz's it was making all types of noise I had some other crossovers in my racks before think they must of caused some ground loops and probably fried some cables so I changed them out because they were bad and making all types of racket I have some TDM 4 ways in it now the crossover that was in my sub rack was making the wires smoke

Correct. Each amplifier in the signal chain will have its own speaker attached to it. And because these amplifiers are configured as bridged-mono, only one speaker will be attached to each amp. Each speaker would be rated about 3500 watts (@ 4ohms)

For this particular amplifier setup, there's only one output coming from the mixer. This is because the amplifiers are setup in bridged-mono, which means the amps can only accept a mono signal. There's another video on our channel that shows how to setup daisy chaining for a stereo (2-chnl) configuration. For mono setups (as shown in the video), the mono signal driving the amplifiers would actually be coming from a crossover (for either lows or mids or highs). It's rare that we would run a full-range mono signal to a group of amplifiers (for an actual show), however, the need does come up sometimes.

I` am very surprised that you u disconnected the ground connection, there are other ways and means to prevent a ground loop entering the system, you remove the ground from the connector then you can potentially become the "ground" as have a lot of high profile people in the music industry have done with fatal consequences. The ground connection we remove is on the audio cable, not the power cable. The audio equipment is still grounded (this does not change). I know of problems where electricity has "leaked" into sound systems (mics, guitars, amps, etc...) and many times, these issues have been the result of mis-use (and abuse) of audio equipment, improper use of cables, aging equipment, and the occasional use of home-made wiring. Electricity has a few entrance points into a sound system. There are some pieces of audio equipment still floating around in the industry that do not utilize NEMA 5-15 power cords (i.e. for 15 amp rated outlets); these non-grounding power cords can easily cause serious/deadly problems. All our power cords contain grounds. If we suspect that a questionable piece of band equipment may be interfacing into out system (i.e an old guitar amplifier), we use a low-voltage proximity detector on the amp outputs (if they have outputs); any voltage present means they do not connect into our system. Each amplifier would drive a speaker-cable connected to it with a speaker at the end. In this video, the amplifiers are setup for bridged mode, therefore, each amp can only drive one 8-ohm speaker; meaning, you would need to connect a speaker to each of the BRIDGED amplifier outputs. Daisy chaining of speakers is mostly used for subs.

I'm in a local band with just a berhinger pmp 5000. I realized that I can't daisy chain basically more than two monitors together. I'm using one channel for mains and one for monitors. I do have an Inuke 1000 that I can add in to the audio outs. I'm hoping it's enough. I think if I'm running two daisy chained from my monitor channel and two from the behringer Inuke, that I can have 4 monitors without having problems.

Sounds like that should work. Make sure the speakers are 8-ohms. If they are 4-ohms, it's usually not a good idea to daisy chain two 4-ohm speakers (too much of a load for most amplifiers). Two 8-ohm speakers daisy-chained rarely ever presents a problem.

The daisy chaining process is ONLY passing the line-level signal from one amp to another. Therefore, each amplifier will produce the same signal as the other; which means, each amplifier would have its own speaker connected to it. In daisy chaining, it's the signal that is passed to each amp, not the power (watts) of the amplifier.

I see what you are saying... VERY IMPORTANT - do NOT tie amplifiers together to make one large amplifier! This is not how amplifiers are made. You could cause a fire and/or destroy the amplifiers by trying to tie them together. If you need more power, you will need to either bridge the amp (place a single amplifier into bridged-mode), or get a larger amplifier. Hope this helps.

Are you referencing the 1/4" phono-jacks for connections? If so, the phono-jacks and XLR function the same way. As long as there is a 1/4" jack for input and output into the amplifier, the same process as XLR connections can be followed.

Yes - it is possible to use those jacks (RCA connections). However, the amplifier will need to have 2 sets of those jacks - 1 set x for input into the amp, and 1 x set for output of the amplifier. The manual for the amplifier may reference this type of setup.

The amperage is the maximum the amplifier can draw when the amplifier is running close to full power. Correct, for 3 amplifiers, it would be safe to have 45 amps available... but that is only if the amps were to run full-power.

Daisy chaining is only sending the line-level signal (from the xover or the console) to all the amplifiers... the watts/power from each of the amplifiers does NOT get passed to the next amplifier. In this video, each amplifier would have speakers attached to their outputs. Each amplifier produces 3,600 watts, which means the speakers attached to each amplifier would need to handle 3,600 watts. We take the 3,600 watts from each amp, and the speaker(s) attached to each amp, and multiply by 4 = 14,400 watts spread across the 4 amplifiers. Each amplifier would power its own speaker(s); the only similarity between the amplifiers is that they are all receiving the same line-level signal. Hope this helps.

Make sure the amplifiers you are using can support the passing of signals out of the amplifier. Also, setting the input of an amplifier in parallel mode (not the amplifier itself, but the input), will usually allow the second input of the amp to act as a pass-through for signals.

If you crank up the master volume on your mixing console to 35 percent volume and your power amplifiers are not clipping and your gains on the mixing console are set correctly and your at unity gain on the mixing console and your using a compressor to prevent clipping and your speakers still sound distorted would this mean that it’s all boiling down to the power amplifiers themselves being internally damaged or due to the fact that the power amplifiers are very cheap and overrated.

From the type of setup you are referencing, audible distortion can come from undersized amplifiers being pushed/driven at their maximum power (for a sustained period of time). Also, distortion could be from the speaker drivers themselves, usually the high-frequency speakers and mid-range (if the cabinet has mid-range drivers); the speakers are being driven beyond their capabilities for a sustained period of time.

When you're in Bridget mode you're supposed to have both channel to go in the same adjustment on panel. because it has an amp for channel and is bridging them. Both gains have to be in the same setting during bridge mode say in manual. This guys daisy chaing all the amp and having 1ch all amps bridged and only ch1 up is bad for the amps it well send power back through ch2 and cause issues. Says in manual. On all amps bridge able. From the QSC manual: --------------------------------------------------- Bridge Mode: Bridge mode configures the channel pair to drive a single high-power loudspeaker load. The INPUT CONFIGURATION switch must be set for BRIDGE mode. Use only Channel 1’s input and Gain control. Set Channel 2’s Gain control at minimum. -------------------------------------------------- Other lines/manufactures of amplifiers may use the gain control of both channels for bridged operation. It's always best to check the manual before configuring an amplifier for bridged operation. Also - many amplifiers DO NOT support bridging.

I don't know what kind of amp/amps you are using, but stageleftaudio is correct, read your manual, as most pro amps work the same way, adjustment is on ch1, and ch2 is left at no gain. READ THE MANUAL!
