Hi Sam! I have never before, upon a Reactor's second reaction to Angelina, felt the need to say to Beware! you are in great danger of the addiction known as "Angelinaitis" for which there is no cure. You have two options. Cease reacting to Angelina and suffer a deep sense of loss or accept that if you ignore the danger you will suffer hours and hours of sheer emotional pleasure, the like of which you have never before experienced. So, the decision is yours. I became entranced with 7 year old Angelina when she first stepped on to the stage on Norway's Got Talent in 2013, singing Billy Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday" and I have watched and listened to every performance she has done. She never adds anything to a song which could lead a person to think she was doing so just to say "Look how good I am" Her whole aim is to sing the song in the manner she feels truly reflects the emotions in the lyrics and melody. And the most remarkable talent she has is to be able to communicate those same emotions to her listener

I very much enjoyed your description of Angelina's voice...and as you say, she connects with the listener so well, that she only needs her voice to tell the story, relying very little on accompaniment. In this performance she does not use vocal fry as much as other songs...she just has such an incredible array of vocal techniques. And she plays with the tones, vowels, riffs and runs. Never do I know what to expect...just wonderful! Thanks for your reaction.

One of the things that I like most about her besides the nuances of her voice, that gorgeous vibrato and rasp, her beauty in the broad sense, her generosity towards the people who follow her, her cheerfulness and this magnificent and rare power to touch people in their hearts, it's her respect for the songs. It's the song first and the best way to sing it. So all these melismas and flourishes are unusual on her part. It's the "Special AGT", to condense and expose the variety of her talent and her array of vocal techniques in less than three minutes and to touch the American audience with what she believes can please them.

Angelina is the most versatile singer I have ever seen. I have listened to everything she has uploaded to youtube over the last 6 years, most many times. These 2 AGT songs only shows you a tiny fraction of what she can do. These performances show her genius level of ability to rearrange a classic, iconic song into something totally new for another generation to experience. As far as her vocal ability goes, this is about 10% of what she can do. These songs show her breathy, velvet-smooth, emotive, lullaby voice. I say it takes listening to 30-40 of her covers/originals to really see what she can actually do. I don't call her the Angel of 1000 Voices for nothing. For something totally different, check out her Feeling Good (10 yo), It's A Man's World (12) or The Show Must Go On (13) for a demonstration of her power & belting abilities. She will blow your socks off. She has mastered every music genre or style, although jazz is her favorite, & you will find yourself saying "I didn't know she could do that," many, many times as you listen to her vast library of songs. She is a once in a lifetime vocal artist that continues to get better every day. She is the TOTAL PACKAGE!!!

Pavlov's Dogs or Angelina's Angels? Angelina is a beautiful young woman with an ability to reach into the innermost depths of your mind on a level with what is known as a "shaman". AJ makes one feel her words and sounds. In the past we may have felt a similar sensation with maybe one song from as artist, but AJ encompasses the ability to conjure up this sensation with every performance. There is a synergy between her looks, sounds, and gestures, and her abilities to activate your senses, therefore; just seeing a picture of her is enough to bring tears to one’s eyes, we are indeed, Angelina's Angels.

What I hear in this performance by Angelina is a very thought provoking interpretation that blends the singing styles of three great singers, that suffered life long battles with addiction and depression: Amy Winehouse, Judy Garland, and Etta James. Taking that into consideration the words of the song have actually changed in their meaning changing the song into a dark and bluesy lament. Simply brilliant!. Take a listen to the song again with that meaning in mind and let us know what you think.

I loved your likening her 'technique', for want of a better word, to the breaking of waves. Some are huge, then Angelina brings the whole 'story' to a gentle 'pull-back' wave, rejoining the body of the ocean again, then building it up all over again. A wonderful analogy, for a truly unique and consummate, 'legend' in the making. Naturally, these are my personal opinions.

It has to be hard when you get 2.5 minutes to show the world what you can do. I think Angelina tried to pack in as much as she could in the time given, but as someone that has listened to everything Angelina has done (literally everything... so many times), I can say this (and the other AGT performance) is a little heavier on the runs and belts than her normal mode. One of the things that really draws me in with Angelina is how naturally she sings... it never seems overdone. Even in the AGT performances, she managed to walk right up to the edge of overdone without actually stepping over the line. You have seen two performances from Angelina, and I hope you continue to check out more of her stuff. Her library of work seems like a goldmine for someone looking to explain vocal technique. I recommend checking out this performance of "I Put A Spell On You" at only 9 years old. It is different than what you have heard from her so far, and will start to give you look at her incredible versatility.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKipnaJ5hb2tedU

I've listened to everything Angelina has done in the past, and frankly the only song I can recall with any significant melisma is "Unchained Melody." I could be wrong, so please point me to the performances where Angelina used significant, or any, melisma (runs/riffs). I thought the runs were totally appropriate for the feeling in these two performances, and yes, she had two minutes to impress the judges with her vocal capabilities. I don't think it was a question of what AGT "likes" IMO.

In 125 covers and 4 originals, I think I've heard Angelina use melisma (runs/riffs) once ("Unchained Melody"). Otherwise it's been pretty much clean renditions. While I'm usually not a fan of runs/riffs, I think they were appropriate (and quite extraordinarily beautiful) here and in her first performance of "Bohemian Rhapsody" for 2 reasons. First they were part of the song's structure in those unique arrangements IMO, and second she has only approx. 2 minutes to demonstrate her vocal abilities to judges. In any case, as usual, Angelina absolutely nailed it!

She is not trying to do all the technical stuff intentionally, like trying to find the right variation to convey an emotion- she just does it. when you are happy, you smile, when you are angry you frown. she simply does that with her voice, her voice is the face. i mean there are lots of singers who can do it naturally. but something about her that you dont see in singers ever, is her ability to compose. it is as though she is making music with her voice and she perfectly knows how well they all go together. that is her true gift.

Don't worry about the amount of material you have to go through with Angelina. If you have the time to make recordings, then certainly I will have the time to watch them, especially if you keep givning metaphors like rising and falling of waves, it's so spot on. One really gets the feeling of laying on the beach and listening to the swells of the sea, all her performances has this natural rhythm that seems to come from nature itself.

DJ... I totally agree.. I am not a huge fans of runs... She does do them differently then what you hear from other artist... I don't think she need them, but I get why she added them ... the unique quality and sound of her voice are all she needs. To me, it's her arrangements that absolutely blow me away. to have those kind of ideas at 13 is absolutely outstanding. It shows that she is not just a singer, but a musician with a exquisite taste for music. She is very different type of artist , and to me, should not even be on AGT.' It did get her a chance to sing for a much bigger audience base. and for that I am happy for her. Another thing no one has even talked about is that fact that she is sing in a second language. Her annunciation is fantastic. you would not even know she is from a different country. She is going to be a artist for a very long time. She is focused , driven, works very hard and has her path clearly set. Can't wait to hear what else she will do. By the way, if you really wan't to have your mind blown, listen to her sing "I put a spell on you" at age 9. Blues / Jazz sung by a 9 year old that sounds like a 45 year old lounge singer. Truly a gift. amazing, simply amazing.

Love your observations and agree completely. I'm not a run/riff fan but Angelina's blow me away. I belive she chose them because she only has about 2 minutes to impress the judges with her vocal abilities. That said, I felt they "made" the performances. We need to remember that at 13 she's a performer with 11 1/2 years of experience as she started at 1 1/2. Her arrangements are awesome, and I believe she will be an artist, as you say also, that will be listened to and remembered for generations.

Toad = Towd , Blues = Blueowes. Such a genius. She has done more runs in her two AGT performances that she has done the last 6 years put together. I believe she is using melismas to show her vocal control given the very short amount of time she is allotted by the show. Sadly, she isn't relying on her gorgeous vibrato and rasp as much as she usually does. Great reaction Sam! Please do more Angelina. Yeah! Great choice. did you also watched her take on "Nothing breaks like a heart" ? It's gorgeous, way better than original in my opinion!!

I wish she didnt win the Golden Buzzer. I would loved her to do a semi-final song. So 3 songs total instead of 2.

It also shows that she's smart and she knows her audience since shows like AGT and American Idol The Voice Etc the judges and the audience go wild for runs and so the performer usually packs them in as much as possible I like that Angelina didn't do it that way she definitely didn't more than she normally would but she placed them in nice spots and they were fairly short

You will definitely like her A Song For A from Nico Cartosio, while your description may by similar on the use of her voice, it has no “runs, belts and rigs” making it more contemporary of author of the lyrics who lived on the 18th century.

Perfect analogy about the wave in; wave out...in her song phrases, along with her gentle raspy sounds.

Thanks Sam, I love your key to reading Angelina's voice like a musical wave that dynamically rises and falls, while maintaining unity and liquid harmonic flow :) Slowly discover all the covers that she has made and her 3 original songs, I repeat slowly, because she is truly fascinating in her short, but immense improvement path in the last 6 years. Good walk :)

I imagine now how people must have reacted to Mozart... I think he, like she, were/are too young to know that what they are doing is impossible, are fearless in tackling it, with a supreme natural talent to invent their own unique creation. I can't wait to hear the next one she delivers, i have no idea what it will be or where she will go, I'll have to sit back, grab a tissue, and let her take me where she will, completely confident I will be amazed, and enjoy the ride.

You are funny again! What happened to the purple shamrock? Is that a Groot cup? I love this cover. She dressed for it. Yes, she is heavily influenced by the old jazz. Her audition piece for Norway's Got Talent at age 7 was Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday." Every time I hear this rendition, I think, "How many runs can one put in a road?" She is a really good story teller with song. Yes, interesting movement. I get pulled in and carried to the end of the music story. Thank you. I think I saw one other reaction to get. You are funny! I love how you play. 💜

You really have only heard only one corner of her vocal range. She has a library of them. With with many sections. Her deep register is amazing. You do not hear it from most female singers especially a 14 year old. She sounds like an Amy Winehouse, Norah Jones, Elvis Presley, out sing some of Adele’s,,,like A million years. At 9 she belt out I put a spell on you and there is a This is a Man’s World. Falling Leaves. Mr. Lonely. Her Born to Die is One of my favorites and shows off her lower register. She has so many recordings and there is a great deal of variety of the type of music that she sings. She really is an amazing talent.

Good one, Sam, keep the Angelina reactions coming! Angelina has been exploring melismatic singing in the last year or so and incorporating that into her vocabulary. Her interest in afro-american music from a very young age, inspired by her grandmother's record collection, explains that to an extend, I think. But also the fact that her grandmother, with whom she has a very close relationship, is from Iran and that Angelina and the family stayed there for a while when she was younger. My guess is that she has heard Iranian music too and has been influenced by that as well.

I've thought about the runs as something she does do appeal to an American audience. To my knowledge she has almost never used it before AGT. The belty parts are kind of mandatory in these kind of shows. Don't get me wrong, she has proven befor that she can belt like a...err...beltier (Yes, that's a word!) singer. The amazing part is that she STILL manages to get it 100% Angelina Jordan. I LOVE that flick to head voice in the end. That might be the jazzies moment of AGT-history! Being 13 and just ignore the "this is how you sing on AGT"-thing is almost as impressive as the singing she actually does. It's also a brilliant thing to make sure this is the kind of singing she's known for. That makes her a bit immune to the Syco machine. They'll have a hard time selling her as a main stream pop-singer now and I've got a hard time imagining her wanting to be one of those.

Great analysis, except for one thing. You said you could now recognize her style; her distinctive voice, yes, but her style? You are mistaken. You haven't begun to touch the multitude of styles that she sings. Here is a short list to show some of the variety (there are about 110 more): Above the Water ()kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKHHeX2AhqaXb7s) A Million Years Ago (kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3mvpY2HaNh8rac) Wicked Game (kzbin.info/www/bejne/op-mk5aXbr-IeJo) Wake Me Up (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGbSnnaribZsiZI) Autumn Leaves (kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmXPYaxpfpepp8U) Song for A (kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKCWnpuuhbJgq6M) I Will Survive (kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5KapJSVo5yeY5o) Sway (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHiYmadre86lrbM) At Last (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmKck4RvfpKHY8k)

Thanks, Sam for another astute reaction video. You noted Angelina harkens back to a bygone era. I agree. To me, she is an old soul who reminds me of the bluesy, jazzy, sultry tones of the great Torch Song singers like Billy Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald.
