Please do check out some Epica to see Simone out in front, she's extremely versatile and powerful! She is also a great duet partner, though, so your observation was spot-on there. Whether it's with Floor Jansen or Roy Khan, Simone just seems to have effortless chemistry with whoever she's singing with, and good instincts for when to lay back and when to dial up the intensity. Quite an underrated skill!

‘Congratulations, Roy, you don’t sound like a harpy.’ I honestly expected you to say ‘congratulations, Simone, not too shabby’ at some point. In all fairness - I’m really happy you decided to listen to this song and I’m happy to see you enjoyed it! Last thing - when we spoke about this piece, I forgot to tell you the song comes from Black Halo - a concept album based on Dr Faustus (context! Context always matters!). Still, you perfectly got the idea of what all this was about. So, joining the courtesy chain - thank you, Sam?

In a way, Simone IS Floor 2.0. The guy who started Floor's first band, After Forever, went on to later start Epica. Since it worked so well the first time, he found another talented teenager, this time a mezzo, who could really mix metal and opera singing styles , a Floor 2.0 with a shared interest in symphonic Gothic metal to replace the original Floor who came to like her metal more progressive and less operatic. They are all on very good terms, which is how we know that Simone and Floor sound awesome together, in a live performance of Sancta Terra at Epica's anniversary concert.

The song is from The Black Halo, which is the second half of Kamelot's rock opera based on Faust (the first half is the album Epica). Roy is the widower Faust figure (renamed Ariel for the albums), and Simone is the Helen character (renamed Marguerite) who resembles Ariel's dead wife and is unwittingly used by Mephisto to tempt Faust. The song occurs the day after Ariel and Marguerite sleep together for the first time. One of the other videos from this album is March of Mephisto, which features Shagrath of Dimmu Borgir as the titular character.

I think you've got something mixed up, Epica is with Roy, the album before the one this song was on. Tommy came in with Silverthorn. Edit: I guess you made a typo and meant to write 'then' instead of 'the' which makes it confusing due to the band and album names.

You're dead on the roles. This is part of a 2 album storyline, and Roy's character lost his wife Helena, then met Simone's character (Marguerite) that resembles Helena. This song is about him realizing that Marguerite is not Helena, and it wouldn't be fair to either to continue the relationship. So, my interpretation of this musically is that Simone is on the second layer of the sound because she's pretty much an echo on Roy's mind while he's processing everything. Also, Roy's is notoriously emotional when singing, and he's always more focused on passing on the emotions than to actually sing in the best way.

So not so unfortunately. :)) The constant touring was doing in Roy's vocal chords, and he was better off taking those several years for himself. Now we have Tommy fronting both KAMELOT and SEVENTH WONDER to a great effect, while Roy got back with his pals to revive CONCEPTION. If the whole world does not go to hell soon, we can hope for a beautiful era to come. :]

Poor Roy. He had to dump his career because he missed his wife and child so much. If you want to be a rock star, stay single and have no family. Touring and contractual obligations will make your life un-livable if you miss the love of your life. You are owned by the record company. You had better sell millions of albums or you will not get paid. They put up all the money for touring and stage shows and that is alot of money you have to cover. Music is a tough life. I lived it and got out because I could not live on pizza and beer. Not to mention the bus and the cheap motels. You really learn to hate the band members when you can`t get away from them. It is like a marriage of four or five people without the love or commitment that two people agree to. We kicked it hard live and had alot of fun but after awhile, it became a stale conflict of who was to blame for our failure to make it. We blamed each other rather than understanding that super talents were simply better than we were. Even those super talents were living out the same problems we were. If album sales were slump, They did not get the big bucks. The music business is a very tough life. So you had better love music more than anything else in life if you want to endure. The system is rigged to make them money. After all, if they are paying for it all, you have to make more money than it costs to do all that. Then you get paid. So you had better be a big deal! Some bands get lucky some don`t. That is how it works.

Elizabeth would have been the song I would have suggested. I also love wander, but ballads arnt always the best songs for reactions.
@dodgrblu5 жыл бұрын
Worst is a huge exaggeration, but it's certainly not among the best, however for a vocal coach it was probably more interesting to see a duet, in a fairly accessible song to people who don't listen to metal. I suggested the Elizabeth trilogy myself, or Center of the Universe would be great too, but of course Patrons get priority.
@MrDrus5 жыл бұрын
Ok, in my defense, I still think his best display of flexibility is The Zodiac due to ranging from gritty bass to tenor, all with theatrical approach. BUT the problem is that you won’t find this live (this was the priority) and I also went for what I found accessible. Elizabeth is amazing but it’s more of a piece that you’d dissect and analyse piece by piece for hours.
@iiniestaa5 жыл бұрын

I certainly understand the premise of why you do your vids. But, to pause during a guitar solo, or right at the "drop," will draw the ire of the "Orc Horde"...otherwise known as "Metalheads" (of which I am one...for almost fifty of my fifty-six years of life). Anyway, just a suggestion that may very well save your life someday lol. After all, arguably besides sports fans, Metalheads are the most fickle on earth...just sayin.
