Another brilliant tutorial from my fave artist. Tip to pass on….I extended the life of my grinding head by resting my work on a piece of practice glass on the table thereby raising it to the unused section of the head. I use 2 layers of glass to raise it again when the head wears down. X

Mackenzie, what is the deciding factor for using 60/40 or 50/50? Also, can I make jump rings out of silver colored copper gauge 18? Thanks for any info you can share.
@MakenzieHallie
@MakenzieHallie 2 жыл бұрын
50 50 is used for tinning the entire piece, all edges and joints. 60/40 is for building the bead up after that. You should be able to make jump rings but they are pretty cheap, hundreds for a few bucks on Amazon! Not worth meticulously making jump rings sometimes.

So those air plants ought to be misted, or removed and dunked in water periodically. Did you protect the solder with a wax buff to protect it?

@@MakenzieHallie if you don’t polish them how do you keep the black patina from turning a whitish color?
@MakenzieHallie
@MakenzieHallie 3 жыл бұрын
Well I'm not sure. Ive never had an issue with "white mold." I also have many fellow makers, lifelong and early in there career that report the same. I think its simply the washing process. If enough flux residue is left over to cause the "white mold", I would say finding a different cleaning method is top priority. I don't believe polish would stop that reaction, just wipes the visible corrosion away. Personally, I don't think stained glass polish even polishes. Lol. But this is all just my personal experience and opinion. Many artists would disagree and agree.

Hi Makenzie. LOVE the 2 jump rings and asymmetrical look of the hanger. Four hangers would definitely be overkill for air plants. But I have a question for you, now that my SG goodies have arrived (it’s been like Christmas in July at my house 😁). What is the secret to applying jump rings? I must be klutzy because I couldn’t attach those m*$therf$&#**RS for nothing!! Got my first burn too, when a solder glob fell into the webbing between my thunk and forefinger. 😱🤬. You might have heard me cussing from NC, I ordered some helping hands, but was wondering if you had any tips.
@MakenzieHallie
@MakenzieHallie 3 жыл бұрын
Oh no!!! Lol molten metal burns are the worst. Trust me, you will quite literally get used to them just like glass slices. Unfortunately, just like all aspects of this art, it's practice! Just need to work on glass or attaching jump rings every day and it will become natural. No secret to it.

@@MakenzieHallie The explanation in the link is "interesting". Perhaps not "entirely accurate". With 50/50, a specific temperature might be easier to work with if one is loading the tip and transferring as you were doing with the tacking of the rectangles. Again, you have used the metallurgy to your advantage...I truly enjoy your work.. John
@MakenzieHallie
@MakenzieHallie 3 жыл бұрын
Well i don't think 50/50 should be used for an entire project because it's easier for whatever reason. All my stained glass peers and mentors explain it that way, so that link is exactly what I stand behind on why we use the two different metals for filling and beading. Until I get a better link, or you write a super smart and actually scientific one, thats what I'll be sending people too. 😂 As always,, I appreciate you john!! 🖤

@@MakenzieHallie 50/50 will be a little more viscous than 60/40 at a specific temperature below the full melt temp, so tacking will be a bit easier as it can transfer more solder, it won't fall off the tip as easy as the 60/40 which is full liquid above 183C, as it will be a paste just above the initial melt temp of 183C. The more interesting thing is what happens when it cools down and solidifies. Both alloys will shrink about 15% by volume when they do the liquid to solid phase transition. That is why a solder pot when turned off has the hole in the middle of the solder, it sucks down due to shrinkage. When eutectic and 60/40 cool down and freeze, they will put tensile forces on the joints, trying to pull the foil towards the center of the seam. When 50/50 solidifies, it does so in a more gradual fashion, so when the final solidification occurs, the bulk of the solder has already frozen and shrunk, so the last to solidify doesn't apply as much stress on the foil. (this was solved waaay back by Bell Labs, they added bismuth to the solder so it did not shrink upon freezing, making their on-the-pole circuits more reliable through environmental temperature cycling.). The only saving grace is that lead based alloys will stress relieve over time due to creep, so peeling and shear forces on the copper foil to glass glue interface will reduce in time. 50/50 of course does not create a shiny surface when it solidifies, whereas 60/40 and 63/37 does produce a shiny surface. Patina's tend to negate that difference. Lead free is in general a eutectic, meaning it completely turns to liquid at it's melting temperature, tin/silver being 221C. The difficulty is that it freezes at that temperature, and the built up tensile stress of the phase change shrinkage will not stress relieve, as tin/silver does not exhibit long term creep. The biggest issue I see there is, the peeling forces can tend to lift the foil off the glass a bit (usually not visible to the naked eye), and residue flux can trap there. Even neutralizing liquids may not fully reach the trapped flux, leaving a long term corrosion concern. John

@@MakenzieHallie I did some googling and found a forum called American Glass Guild, just joined. Eventually I will be allowed to post there, and my first post will be all about soldering and fluxes. I have phase diagrams of lead/tin and tin/silver so can explain what I meant about solidus/liquidus/pasty range, and how it impacts the joints. I don't see how to paste diagrams here, so will try to put it all in one location, then provide links. Also, I will detail the rosin based and water based fluxes, how they differ, how they are activated (zinc chloride), and how solidification puts forces on the joints and foil adhesive. Hey, I just figured out how to send you a picture of my 3D soldering station contraption, I was sooo proud of myself.. I did it without the help of a grandchild, go figure.. John

@@MakenzieHallie I also wonder what the difference is. I plan on examining the physical difference under my stereoscope, and I have been designing the fixturing to test how they are different. Also, the tap cutters and the serrated ones. At about 30 dollars, I would hope they require less down force, but who knows....John
@MakenzieHallie

Yea I don't know how much the microscopic difference in score, translates to thicker/tinner glass cutting. Like alot of tools I wonder if it's just another one of those things made to sell more. I've never noticed a change or advantage from using the "correct" size with the correct glass. But I'm curious as always to see what you find!!!
@toroidwinder2089

@@MakenzieHallie I just examined a 2-6, a 6-12, and a 12-20 scoring wheel. It looks like the angle gets sharper as the thickness of the glass increases. Perhaps the intent is to drive a deeper score line with the same pressure. I've gathered all the "fixins" to fabricate a pseudo mini mate, only for straight lines and with different weights. I want to determine how different each wheel is with respect to scoring vs down pressure. Then repeat with the tap and serrated. On another note, I am happy, happy, happy... built the shelf, ran the exhaust, setup the water cooling, did some test firings on come clear cathedral. I had enough power (at 50%) to shatter the clear in one second, so I know absorption is good, I know I have enough power. On to software.. John

You can buy copper patina, your solder needs to be very recently cleaned and you get the best results applying with a cotton bud / Q tip rather than a brush as you want to avoid any contamination. But I don't know about gold patina,sorry
