@@Adulto357 true and true. then again there are places you can. Ive spent some good years traveling around and ended up in southern oregon at one point miles in the Siskiyou forest gold mining on land that I claimed through the state. south fork #3 was 40 acres up near lightning gulch and Wicked Nuggets was 120 acres of canyon creek. ive mapped out places through google earth with geographical mineral topo maps, im pretty certain no one has ever set foot there before, although would need a small nimble heli and funding to get there & prospect. so deep in the forest no ones has staked a claim there in historical records. has similar vibes when going out there on the claim as it is in game, just way more risk & expenses. There are definitely regulations as to what you can do but you'd be surprised what you can accomplish if you're resourceful and somewhat creative. this is a bit of a secret though and that area of southern oregon's a hidden gem so don't tell anyone.

My only real experience with land in MMOs is Star Wars Galaxies. That game did a lot of things right. First and foremost relevant to settlement was that the main distinguishing feature of a successful town was a variety of reliable vendors and services, and this invariably required active resident players in that community every day. Players will cross vast distances if they know there's an active community at the end of the journey. At the other end of the scale, mere bedroom communities were hellacious suburban wastelands, and players would actively steer clear of them. Moral of the story: it's time and effort invested in a community that makes it a desirable and important place, not money or promotion or information.
@LoudGuns
@LoudGuns 2 жыл бұрын
Those are really good points. I’m hoping that when we can do it, being open and welcoming to people looking to settle in our city is going to set us apart! A bit like settlements in the real world right - as cities scale you can get the costs of goods and services down and provide better employment and business opportunities. Of course some folks like living in villages and there’s upsides to the quiet life!

My memories of SWG (pre-CU) is not wholly difference from Matt but not completely aligned either. The "towns" developed, usually, around guilds on Intrepid. The nature of guilds is they come and go based on a kind of critical mass, so towns were rarely durable for any real length of time. People lose interest and move on to the next game. The elite crafters (like Acme's armor) could have existing out in the middle of nowhere and you would go there simply to find the "meta" armor. Same with the weapons manufacturer (whose name escapes me). You usually had contacts whose supplies, while not meta, were good enough without paying elite stock prices. I bought in bulk. I ran a cantina with a friend on the bloody edge of the Krayt graveyard on Tatooine supplying buffs to those venturing out to hunt pearls. The "town" I lived in was completely ad hoc. People were drawn there for the Krayts. It was way more durable a town as I remember than my guild "town" because it was a convenient jumping off spot to chase down the elusive pearls Jedi's used for their lightsabers (and Krayt scales for armor/weapons IIRC). Thus, the bigger the universe, I wonder how durable a town will actually be. It, like normal real estate, was more a matter of location, location, location. Organization was a plus but not a "must have." For me, a supplier of raw material in SWG, my "farm" moved to where the best quality stuff was to be found. Find a good spot, plop down your harvesters, check them later on the week to keep them powered up, then SWG's version of quantum moved raw material points and you had to go find it all over again. The "home" was where I stored my stuff. I had two. There was the "cantina" and one was in the scenic middle of nowhere on Rori because I simply liked the view best of all there. It took me months to find it. So that marker in SC? I suspect one will just be a spot I find where I can "farm" the best I can find. When that runs out, I move on to the next plot of land. Another will simply be my permanent home and, depending on the game, having a "town" around it may or may not be mandatory.
@LoudGuns
@LoudGuns 2 жыл бұрын
@@RevTemerity that’s really cool dude! Personally I think if you want to build a city it’s got to come down to something bigger than resources. I think I’d aim to make it a strategic spot - trade lanes and jump points will matter more than raw mats. If you can then focus enough critical mass of crafters even better. Finally I feel culture and architecture will be important - with all of the tech we have nowadays people could live and work anywhere but they are still drawn to metropolis’ like London and NYC. Outposts will almost certainly rise and fall on the back of booms and busts. I actually really look forward to seeing little outposts fall into disrepair- maybe ultimately providing salvagers with good work cleaning up.
@mattp1337
@mattp1337 2 жыл бұрын
@@RevTemerity Ah, the joy of relocating fleets of harvesters with every week's resource shift. I had a fleet of about 50 large harvesters, most of which were entrusted to employees who would earn a fee for every move and a share of the take. Having so many meant I always had resources in bulk and my vendors were always well stocked, with discounts for bulk. I like to think that kept people coming to our remote corner of Dantooine. That and our cantina was usually staffed, and we had a half dozen other vendors (including my droids). Two main guilds (1 covert rebel, 1 openly imperial) made up most of our town, and we did regular group hunts and missions, plus light roleplay. I think we were on Sunrunner, but it was a long time ago. I take you point about being near a major draw like Krayt hunting grounds. It's hard to say what will be the equivalent in Star Citizen, but having reliable services (fuel, repair, ammo, general goods) in proximity to well-traveled wormholes has gotta be a reasonable formula for a moderately successful settlement.

I really hope they let people build stuff with all varieties of tools, with just efficiency and speed as a difference. What I mean is that you could build a room, a turret, a piece of furniture, a tool, utility, generators, all sort of stuff, but different tools make different things and at different speeds. For example you could have: 1. Hand held crafting tool, put materials into a backpack and sort of 3D print the object you want. It would take a reeeeeally long time to make an entire room this way, constantly requiring refills to your material storage. But it would be really handy just for making some quick wiring from your generator, to your life support device, or just quickly making a single small turret, or perhaps furniture inside rooms where you can't drive a vehicle into. 2. A land based small rover about the size of a ROC, but instead of mining ore into storage, it would 3D print buildings from materials in the storage. Should work the same way as the hand held tool, just faster, more cumbersome, and with larger storage. This is sort of the bare minimum for building an actual outpost, but would be accessible to a fairly new player with only a cutlass and the vehicle. 3. A small ship, would work kind of in the same way as the land vehicle, but with the same difference than the ROC and Prospector have. You wouldn't be able to make small delicate things like wires and buttons, but it would be much more effective at making buildings. Also the land vehicle would have a hard time building up to make a second floor, but the ship could do this. 4. The capital ship base building monster. It's a floating factory with purpose built tools to pump out bases in record time. And it's not only the speed of building, but this would be usable for the front lines of battle or urgent operations. You could pre-build a supply depot, a command center, a field hospital, or garage, and you only need to touch down for a couple of minutes to lay the buildings down. If you CBA to build your own base, you could also just pay a player or NPC crew to build and deliver it to you. If they make this gameplay accessible for all, by making a vast variety of different tools you can use to build, ranging from hand held small tools, to a huge capital ship base factory... that's so much gameplay that people would love. Like I'd be so down to just make my main solo-gameplay loop around making some sort of automated farm on some moon or planet. I'd see what materials I need for the buildings and devices, and I'd travel through planets and space stations, mining or trading for the materials. And eventually I'd have like some sick farm that's automated and pumping out some crops into storage, so I could make it sort of my own daily/weekly quest to take and sell it. And I'd build cool SAM site turrets and gatling turrets to protect my land from pirates and raiders. Edit: I love the point about planetary shields. It would indeed be a good idea to let players craft different varieties of planetary shields that protect their bases from bombs or gunships while they're gone. Biggest shields being able to sustain hits from nukes and MOABs, or even weapons the size of the Irdis railgun. This would have two nice effects. First of all, it makes griefing a bit harder, with more risk of getting caught by the navy or the owner's defensive structures. A single loser with no friends can't just drop a huge bomb from orbit and leave with some sick satisfaction. And secondly, it would make PvP sieges in contested planets far more exciting. Ground attack teams would be necessary to get through the shield without wasting huge effort in continuous bombardment which may or may not overwhelm the shield. Infantry special forces would be an amazing tool to sabotage shields undetected. But on the subject of griefing. I'd say in addition to big shields you can build and the navy coming in to help once your base sends an automated distress call, insurance could play a part. Let us buy insurance that sees NPC base builders show up to repair or rebuild your base and deliver you replacement items for the ones recorded to be stored there. As well as a small cash compensation if your base was generating income while it was up and running. This would make gameplay sense to truly make the secure imperial systems secure. But it would also make lore sense because the empire's insurance is supposed to be the navy which is so propagandized to be worth all the tax credits. And if it failed to protect your settlement, it is only in the empire's best interest to rebuild your shit ASAP and give you a friendly pat on the back like "sorry we were super busy with other stuff, hope this compensates your loss and makes you stay as a nice tax paying citizen who votes for more navy funding! xoxo"

Personally, I want to buy a plot of land to build a huge racetrack on I think it would be very cool to see an org turn a desolate planet into a huge trading hub, or a metropolis. There is obvious limits in style and shapes that the base can take, but it’s also super customizable and expandable. The best video I have seen for SC in regards to logically looking at a gameplay loop and really nailing every point. I hadn't contemplated selling completed construction projects to other orgs. I wanted to add an extra thought on upkeep costs...a residence on a foreign system would still need water, air, energy, climate control and those systems also can breakdown. When talking about like warehouses, or like gas silo's, oil platform those would require much more maintenance. Taxes, if i were on pyro setting shop, i would not expect to pay tax tto anyone because what services are exchanged for my taxation, none, and thus no tax....but if i were set on Daymar i would expect taxation but i would expect the navy to show up if im attacked....this could help those pvp haters to have more security or peace of mind

I am interested to see how defense mechanisms could work, and how you could invite other players into your bases if a 'forcefield' becomes a thing. I think it would be a amazing to see players starting hospitals, trading outposts, gas stations, etc., but I am concerned about the greifers who would want to destroy the facilities. Maybe a solution is to file your plot as a public resource/comercial outpost so your base can be in an armistice zone, in return for increased taxes and upkeep. Anyways, thank you for creating this very informational video!

Also a tradeoff from signature and stealth. If you use native materials and build deep within a cave you should be nigh undetectable; alternatively you could build with more durable materials and cap a big ole power generator to shield you from MOABs, but everyone and their mother knows where you are the moment they drop through the jump point.

Wow amazing video, thank you!!! I agree with you about almost everything you talked about. I would disagree only with the pre made buildings instead a free build like ark or others game, but at the end you were right. I would like to add just you have pre building but you can personalize everything about the building, for example, the texture inside and outside of the building: you can choose an industrial look (like lorville) or a futuristic look (like microthech), the color, many types of doors (so you can select each door of your building). Like you have pre made, but you can change all the look. About landing costs and maintenance, i do not agree about moneys costs. If you are on uee territory, i think a good way is tax based on what modules you have (refinery, trade-posts, medics areas). For e.g. you have to pay 5% from your PROFIT for each medic bay you have. So this way you have to pay about your profit. But of course it must have a system to check inactive. For example, if a player or org have an area and they do not use it, others can claim the zone. If have more than one, it can be sold on an auction . It would be very cool. The modules/buildings of your base may have durability, so this way you have to get materials and people to repair the modules/buildings. This is a nice way to deal instead of get money from players.
@LoudGuns

If you’re a fellow Ark but maybe I can bring Atlas up as a reference. Looking past the s*** show that it became I did really like how they did the ships - you have a blueprint you work within but can apply a degree of customisation to make it “your ship”. Add to this that you have lots of building blocks and you can still make something unique. That’d help to keep base building a great experience without ruining a beautiful game with lots of cuboid, boring bases. It might be getting too into the economic weeds but I think there’s some really interesting stuff you could do with taxation that would create challenges for large orgs that limit their power while leaving little groups and solos unscathed. If you had a land tax based on the total value of an organisations land (factoring in development - eg mining stations) you could create a cash flow challenge for big orgs that could incentivise them to mothball less profitable spots (freeing those up for smaller groups who may have more time to put into them).

I've acquired an 85X. I've finally started streaming. I'm thinking about doing a series called "Star Taxi" or maybe "Squirrel's Taxi Service". In these streams I intend to get on crowded servers, offer my services as a Taxi, and interview my passengers on stream asking the passengers about what they like about SC and their experiences. What do you think about this idea?

I think most of the people we'll be ferrying will be NPCs. I'm not sure a ton of people will be paying for an Uber when they can fly their own ship around. Could get some, but don't think it'd be a ton. If you gain a large fan base on your streams though, you'll get more people showing up just to appear on the stream of course.

@Loud Guns I thought I heard developers say that land claims and their buildings would only exist on the shard the owner is active on, and would disappear within a short amount of time of them logging off. This solves security and the 'logging in without a base' issue. However it completely screws with my immersion and feeling of being in a consistent, living, breathing, physicalized universe. I'd much rathe rhave it exist, and be protected by some badass security. Heck, I'd even pay a pirate crew to show up and pew pew whenever my alarms are triggered. There's got to be better ways to deal with it than just have it disappear..

I played a great game that unfortunately flopped called Last Oasis. The launch was a…..shit show, but they effectively bottlenecked us at the lower tier of the maps and tech tree for a couple of weeks so if you got hit by poor servers on the launch you could catch up. I just think CIG should take a similar approach - bring in land claims once we’ve been live for a couple of months and those who don’t have $$$ bought claims can buy them for UEC. I know it’ll piss some Pioneer owners off (full disclosure a pioneer is on my shopping list still) but realistically the people who own Pioneers and Land Claims are a tiny % vs those who don’t. Not that I’m cynical or anything but I think it makes sense for CIG to stay a bit ambiguous until much closer to live, then choose the option that annoys the smaller group of players.

The idea of making a asteroid refinery interests me because who is going to find it so it will not need protection or a landclaim and the travel time for getting mined stuff will be at the minimal and to sell the goods will be from a unpredictable root to avoid interception to prove my point try and find benny henge with out directions and even the largest scanner will not find it because of it being on a asteroid.

You are forgetting something the orion will be able to move asteroids so could build with them like get so many together should make it large enough to make a base just think benny henge but much bigger or just surround a bunch off endeavors and repair ships you would be self sufishent and undetectable and just I case you do get found in every nook and cranny put sentry turrets with asteroids being imperious to every thing but mine lasers and they can not drop them bombs on you you should be safe.

@Loud Guns I have a topic that players could be interested in and that is small, med to large fleets and what it might take to maintain each of them. What is considered to be a small, med and large fleet ? Will you need an org. ? What will you need to bring along on your journey through the stars ? I know that many players, including myself see the ship candy that CIG puts out there for everyone to drool over and end up with more than 1 or 2 ships. I am not sure that many players are thinking that far ahead. With bigger planetary systems coming, we will need bigger and or longer range ships. At this point I know it's a lot of speculation, but that is what the game is at this time, speculation citizen. You do a great job at describing and explaining things in a logical manner. This is why I thought you might take on this subject for the new year .

I wonder, how would they prevent land overlay potential problem? like If I buy Land A but in a different server, another player owns the same area. Then one day, both players joined one server... then how many lots/land/properties can we own? is there a limit base on how much we can afford in game Or number of property the player will currently own? Nonetheless, this concept would definitely change how we will see SC. Somehow would be another perspective on how digital real estate would play. I wish we could hire people to run/maintain and protect our base.

I think it would be interesting to have a building company career path where you can be hired with a few guys to basicly build after what someone wants(maybe ad an design aspect with limits of constriction brand designs but where the person creates within the limits set up a base) and have the construction company build the base no matter if you are online or offline, though the land owner must pay for the selected by the construction company defences like mercs and temporary turrets..

I think ships like the A2/Javelin/Idris/etc SHOULD be able to attack from above. BUT, we should also be able to build strong Anti-Air defences to fight against. Something like shields like you mentioned, heavy and large anti-air/space Artillery projectile/laser guns.
@LoudGuns
@LoudGuns 2 жыл бұрын
Don’t get me wrong - I think an A2 should be able to pancake a little base where the owner hasn’t invested in protection. Hopefully, the A2 owner is disincentivised to do this by the economics - i.e. the cost of the bomb makes it a dumb thing to do. However, I just think to keep things interesting that top-tier ground defences should trump top tier aerial and orbital bombardment options.

@LoudGuns
@LoudGuns 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate! I’ll try and split it into 2 answers; Property should be moveable to the degree that they semi-confirmed (it was a “I don’t see why you couldn’t”) that we would be able to salvage bases. So you could stake a new land claim, then salvage all your buildings on the first plot and use the mats / components to rebuild on the new plot. Based on other survival games I’ve played you’d probably not get back 100% of mats when you salvage but it’d probably save you a lot. On personal hangars I think this would make sense. But I haven’t seen anything in the models of outposts that shows anything bigger than landing pads and ground vehicle garages. It would surprise me if hangars don’t come though.

I could see having land near natural resources as a huge draw. For me, I'm much simpler. I just want a little place of my own, a few pads for my ships, a storage space for my stuff, and maybe some gear lockers and displays for all my hard-won loot. I'm imagining that'll be the most common type of homestead by far, but that's all I want out of it. Persistent hangars will be a nice in-between, but I'm wanting a secluded little spot on a pretty planet or moon

I think you’re absolutely right, the biggest appeal for lots of players is going to be their own little homestead where they can go to log out and bring their tasty loot back to. It'll be awesome when you can build industrial facilities to make money. That's gonna be where the big player-owned corporations will make their money. Forget mining and selling to AI, one company can mine, and another company can refine, and then having logistics companies in between to haul cargo, security forces, etc, etc. Star Citizen has always been about the dream. I just can't wait for it to be a full fledged MMO in the near future. Then we can worry about the cooler features like this. But still tons of fun to dream about!

While I do agree with you on your feelings about "Pay to win", it is also important to understand that this game needs to generate capital to get to a release state at all. So with that said, I have no issue what so ever in giving those who are active and testing now the jump on others that aren't... but could be. If it is true that these grants will always be available for purchase, sale and trade... then it bothers me not a hoot for those who decide NOT to get land not.. NOT to assist with the raising of capital have to pay higher prices or negotiate later with those who did. This is all a gamble. I'm willing to bet more than most because of the potential I see here. It's been such a wonderful game/entertainment experience for me that I would gladly pay for a plot of land.
