If like me the idea of grabbing yourself some primo land and building your own base in SC excites you then hopefully this video should provide a breakdown of all of the details we have been told so far.
Base Building is only just entering true development so it'll still be a while before we see this in game - but I think it represents an incredibly important element of the future endgame so it's definitely worth talking about!

It would be sick if we could have a fly-in or drive-in hangar, underground or otherwise. A cool, custom garage like in GTA to store our collections. If they do building and crafting like Valheim, this game will last generations.

Yeah, calming music, sweeping concept art and graphics, concise info … and a cool riff on the intro. I have seen a lot of this information previously, yet to was happy to sit through this summary and look at the inspirational concepts and designs. 👍🏼

@@LoudGuns water for sure. Since there are boats in SQ42 I want one in PU, that way I can fish. And if it’s freshwater I won’t have to truck in water or dig a well. If accept a river as substitute but I’d prefer a lake up in the mountains somewhere.

As an FC org member who has only joined in on group play a handful of times (mostly cuz I go months without logging into SC), I am really looking forward to the introduction of base building. I don't plan for it to be my primary focus, but I do want to contribute to building the orgs bases as a way to learn best practices to eventually make my own smaller bases for my friend group. Since I don't see base building being my highest priority, I really like the idea of the different levels of security. It sounds like what would best work for me would be to set up a good sized high-sec base for general storage and manufacturing and then expand into low and nul-sec for temporary outposts focused on resource gathering. And the idea of having a big org hub to contribute to and benefit from is just so damn cool.

I think realistically bases (like bigger ships) will probably take multiple people to run properly so ofc extra hands on deck will always be welcomed!

Fellow Last Oasis player, instantly goes to quality mats lol, idk about quality materials but the entire manufacturing loop does sound interesting, I can already imagine groups of players building massive factories which sell stuff out in bulk

Thanks for this compilation of (base)building features and your thoughts about them, I've seen information about most of the crafting systems, but I never sat down and mentally brought them together, now I don't have to! :P

Fantastic and very much needed roundup of info as usual! This is a feature I have been looking forward to since I first discovered Star Citizen and its enormous potential. So many great topics and implications have been explored so thanks for this. I totally agree with the need to avoid the ruination of beautiful landscape with massive and out of proportion blocks often placed to deny access to sites or resources to other players. I have always harboured a secret urge to be a Rock hermit living in my own hollowed out asteroid but perhaps thats for another game!

me personally, i'd like to just have a landing pad, maybe a lil garage, and a med bay. or maybe even the possibility of setting up a clinic for those pesky T1 injuries.

As someone who is in the group of players who aren't into ship gameplay and eager to hear things about what the devs are developing for ground activities and vehicles, this is the one thing I've been looking for the most over the past nine years. Also as someone who writes in-universe articles and interviews people and orgs, can't wait to see how much content base-building and defence/assault creates for that gameplay - all the battle reports, coverage of shifting resource and political influences between orgs, etc. This is where this starts becoming a micro MMO simulation of society in a futuristic setting, fully realising the SC potential.

Haha true. Tbf I think one of the good things with making the high value land in nul sec is that CIG can always keep adding new systems - things get a bit stale, easy just “find a new jump gate” that leads to some new nul sec land (and if they’re smart make it harder to get to from where the current superpowers are entrenched).

I hope that buying and selling of land between players will also be an available option. For example, if you want to build a settlement and your claim is too small, you should be able to make your neighbour an offer, and if he is willing to sell, you should be able to buy it from him, at a mutually agreed upon price. That would add another interesting layer of complexity to the economy of the game.

Low-sec solo hermit here, ideally in a cave somewhere, or on an asteroid off the beaten path. Will need a hanger and ideally a refinery, medical, and a refuel/repair building. Though my fleet is designed to be as independent from civilization as possible, having some sort of base conveniences would be nice. Security through obscurity.

Another good, informative video and interesting changes ahead for sure! Though do we know if CIG work by calendar year? Else Q1 2024 may start in April, so not quite yet!

I believe they work to a calendar year, because if it was a tax one this would technically be Q4 2024 and April would be Q1 2025 (I’m not an accountant but I’m not far off one 😂)

No security asteroid belt bases for mining rare materials, making them really hard to find without a beacon, but incredibly good if big enough. I think I'm in love with that idea!

I really look forward to base building. My only concern is that typically PvP bases quickly become unrealistic monstrosities, as you say, with rows of layered walls and hundreds of turrets (like ARK for instance). This would quickly break the immersion and beauty of SC.

good video. let me think a lot about duel universe base building effect but just better . ill be doing max protection of my base but importing everything i need on order and doing my industry gameplay like that . and when there is a very good ground in nul sec ill strip mine and dump the location or go and make contracts with hardcore nul sec industry people

I can't wait to see what FRCN's got in store for our bases. I was a base building monster in Day Z. I had my own server just so I could build whatever I wanted. It's gonna be fun.

Build a main base in High sec. Then build small recourse gathering bases in low or no sec space. The rule will be to keep as little stock as possible at the no sec location.

I hope they'll take their time with the implementation to provide a well balanced experience for all sorts of players. Besides the top tier content creators there will not be many orgs out there big enough to afford 0 sec. or even low sec. bases. And many just want to enjoy the game and not create another "job" they must attend to every day after their real life job. There is much to consider there - hope it goes well... I remember our Space engineers bases - those took half the time we had to play to attend to and there was little time left to actually do something else.

Absolutely agree that they should take their time! I think the invulnerability in high sec gives a big signal that they’re looking out for folks who just want to enjoy it casually. In big orgs you’ll likely have groups of people who want that base life so you can rely on them while other members are out shooting bad guys and bringing in resources.

I want to see building designs biased off the ship manufacture design formats, could you imagine an Argo style industrial base next to an Origin style resort.

Perhaps with the base building update, practically all resources will be worth mining at some quantities instead of just whatever is the most to make money like gold or quantanium. All of the T1 materials could see some love and frankly those with flat out bad luck or those that have to skip out on valuable rocks due to their tools not being suficient, it would bring me a great joy if these buildings required the likes of titanium, copper, quartz, aluminum, etc... which would mean that having a swarm of prospectors mining (nearly) every rock they see for any metal or mineral that's worth the time can all be pooled into large storage areas ready to be refined into construction material. I also hope that they'll maybe add a scrapping function because I'm sure many of us fat-finger a button or some people have tremors and shaky hands and accidentally misplace structures even though they planned it out perfectly. It would be pretty disheartening if you couldn't deconstruct structures similar to how it is in Subnautica. The only problem i see as of now with this is that it could promote massive zergs or clans (Like in Rust or DayZ for example) where these massive orgs construct massive elaborate cities simply due to the fact that they have an army of MOLE or Prospector miners (and any other mining capable ship that exists/is going to be added) that essentially provide all the materials for these practically impenetrable fortresses. Because as you mentioned in the video, a lot of people, and especially those that are very familiar with Full-loot PVP Survival games (or hardcore survival games) will find ways to use the game's mechanics against itself in order to build hideous, but insanely fuctionable bases that are more defended than the vault in the US Federal Reserve Bank and Fort Knox combined. Overall I hope that SC doesn't wind up becoming a first person EVE Online where these extensive *_corporations_* are able to rule the world, essentially mimicking the real world with whatever Star Citizen's equivalent of a player-run Amazon or Microsoft just dominates. One question I have is if you think that SC is going to put a limit on how large buildings or complexes can be? Are they going to allow players who have the resources essentially colonize and establish huge complexes or entire metropolises, or will they try and make the price of getting extra land so exorbitant that no matter which planet you go to, if you have a certain amount of already claimed land, that the diminishing returns on investments will be miniscule or even in the negatives? Although to answer my own question a bit, I'm sure SC will have any resource deposits of value be finite so that there aren't any permanent money-makers, forcing players to relocate if they seek large profits. All good points, but with regard to the “Zerg” issue I think there’s always a problem in games. Ask someone to define a Zerg and (regardless of the size of org they’re in) a Zerg will nearly always be anyone bigger than them 😂 Smaller orgs definitely have advantages, you can make decisions quicker, communication is much easier etc. But in a game that allows it truly massive groups will form and they will likely use the advantages of their size. Scaling taxation isn’t a bad idea, making it very cost effective for an individual to claim a plot but progressively less efficient for a large org to claim vast expanses of territory. Although this would be easy to circumvent in the same way large guilds get around guild size caps in other games (split large org into 4 smaller allied orgs and claim land with small firebreaks in between), and it wouldn’t change anything in nul sec where land claims and taxation won’t be a thing. It’s obviously all up to CIG in terms of design, but personally I don’t think they will do much to dictate when an org is “too big” and will allow players to naturally find their place in the game. What I do like about their approach is that by creating invulnerability in high sec the small groups and solos do have somewhere to build safely without waking up everyday to find they’ve been raided.

The base building will be great, and would be a fantastic time/material/credit sink for the game as a whole. Can see big building projects needing players transporting construction materials to be sold onsite, and all sorts of stuff.

Yeah I almost went down that alley but the vid was getting a bit long, because while you have the 4x "construction vehicles" that physically do the building, there's a huge list of other ships like cargo and mining vessels which you would need to acquire and ship the materials.

In other games like Space Engineers, Satisfactory and Conan Exiles I am very focused on crafting and construction out of a love for process engineering, town planning and architecture. It's part of the reason why I backed a Pioneer construction ship. I am very much looking forward to this feature in the game along with all the supply chain operations from resource gathering, refining to value added manufacturing operations

I dont think they should hold back or put a timer to someone use their hard cash landclaims, since you will need to survey and decide where to put it. One thing i would like to see is that said land claim can be used and set ONCE, hence you cant just take it back and claim other location you found more valuable, needing to buy another, being ingame or with hardcash (dont know if they will keep selling after the release). Some people talk about holding back larger ships on the game beginning as well, some kind of license and rep to pilot larger ships, that will be kinda harsh as well, im ok if its like a skill test, and you can do it in a reasonable time. Not holding owners of larger ships for long time till they can use it.

I really hope this works for SC and basebuilding doesn't get, abandoned by players quickly. My friend and i played a game called Dual Universe. It had hex shaped lots of land for players to claim all over the planets. So A LOT of lots., but flying through these areas you found tons of half finished and abandoned lots because people just stopped bothering with it. If , within these lots, we can have our own vendor terminals where we can sell our own craftable goods, then this would take me all the way back to Star Wars Galaxies. I so very much miss the crafting system that game had. Here's to hoping....

For the question at the end, I think I'd be somewhere in the middle. Building a quaint little town for people to live in and do business in. Watching ships come and go to buy resources my town produces, or to transport people to and from my town. I really do hope that town building becomes just as viable as building a production facility or a military compound for an outpost.

What can make it "balanced" is that the people with a pioneer can have 3 months with it in the meantime others have the scanner. We will learn from each other through discord, read it, ext. Have a wipe and we all rush to make a claim we might not be able to do anything right away but we will start even... That is if the scanner is cheap.

Hopefully they'll add a CRAM-type turret to shoot down torpedoes/bombs from bomber ships. But knowing how CIG works, environment destruction won't even be a consideration until they shove it out into the PU.

What kind of claim would you take for the org? I wouldnt go for the high security areas rather for no or low security. I think we are big enough to defend our bases.

I would probably go with a core / satellite approach - you build the high value storage and industry in high sec where it can’t be touched and where you can afford to build something more social. But then you build smaller outposts in low and nul sec that you use to gather resources - these would be far more function over form, geared towards maximising extraction and defensive capabilities.

Honestly, I'm one of those players who is completely apathetic to base building and survival mechanics. I plan to have my ship be my home, along with my friends who are like-minded. Living in a fleet and going wherever we want sounds a lot more interesting than pitching tents.

@@Solar546 There probably will be, there's no doubt about that on my part. It's just that I don't really care. I don't mind it's going to be a feature or anything, good for those who will enjoy it. As long as I'm not forced into building and there are other ways of obtaining whatever benefits may be associated with it, it's fine by me. I just hope it doesn't become a situation where you are forced to partake in it because losing out on whatever resources or bonuses a base will give you would be unacceptable. I wouldn't mind food mechanics either, if I wasn't forced to pay attention to it. If food gave you a slight buff to your stamina or movement speed/carry weight that wears off after 10 minutes or so, instead of beginning to kill you if you let one of the bars bottom out. This is my general stance towards game mechanics in a sandbox. Make them opt-in with benefits, instead of directly penalising players for not wanting to do so.

What if “rare shop keepers” showed up in random areas (which we’d all look up online). Now imagine the verse is so fundamentally huge you’d never be able to make it to every corner of the verse in a single day. Now imagine there is a blueprint you want but the shop keeper is way too far away (or you’re just lazy) - we could reach out to other players who are willing to pick it up and fly it over to us for a fair fee. I would absolutely love to be a fine goods shipper and trade intermediate. where if someone has a distant purchase or trade they want to do, i could make it happen

good work.. Regards blueprints, I think science & research will also play a part. Also, current advances in AI could be implemented, eg, instead of commodities, crafting recipes etc just being stored in look up tables in the game, items could be 'researched' in game using a similar mechanic to salvaging RMC, but instead of stripping material you're x-raying and doing material analysis. The AI part could be used to determine what you're scanning is likely constructed from then these results would be saved to the game files as the blueprint 🤷🏼‍♂️ .. random thoughts and hyperbole 🖖🤓

Yeah there's definitely some talk in the ideas forum (link in the vid description) where they get deep into crafting - there they're very much on your page in terms of the science gameloops feeding into the crafting in terms of researching new recipes and potentially improving on existing ones. Remains to be seen how you can make science gameplay immersive though (but I'll leave that one to people with degrees in game design!).

Yeah my thought did go to EVE right away, dropping a structure is pretty much pointless in EVE unless you have a large corp to help defend it 24/7 or like what i did join a big null org that has all the structures i could ever need to build stuff in.

Pioneer/Endeavor/Orion are many years away. Base Building has been greatlly exaggerated, it'll be nothing like in the concept, more Soweto type shanty towns, Starfield type BB will take years. CIG's timeframe sits way outside the ADHD needs of most backers.

I hope they make it hard to raid , like big corps dont care about solo/small bases cus its not worth the time/resources. Atleast with protection.

Thanks for the vid and thoughts on building. I think No Man's Sky got to a great place with this IE, need for power sources, batteries, diversity of structures and need to gather and craft resources. Peace in Ukraine, hope all is well with you and your wife's family

I'm not concerned about early advatages. My assumption is that bases are going to be reset and wiped for the official launch of the game, and new systems will be added semi regularly in the future.

That’s fair - I guess what I’m getting at is (let’s just say) a land claim costs 1-2m credits of UEC, I’d prefer they delayed land claims for even like one week at launch to give those who don’t have one for $$$ a fair chance in the first days land grab

I know a few Ukrainian folks. I was born and raised in russia. Looking forward to the base building/crafting. Cant wait to aquire some ships that can help with that.

Yeah it's got me really hyped (even though I try to avoid that as much as possible)! My wife's family are spread around Ukraine but a good few live over the border in Russia - probably the saddest thing about all this is how it drives normal people apart, hopefully things will get better this year.

11:35 Let's just hope they get this right and make an engaging, satisfying and interesting game loop instead of the shifty grinding lazily pushed out by the likes of for instance Elite Dangerous. That game had so much potential but was basically bled to death by lazy uninterested developers or their managers.

Hey, someone's gotta take up the mantle. Honestly, hopping into a multi-crew ship in SC the first time gave me such hard nostalgia for the early-JTL days - Everyone hopping in a YT-1300 or Nova Courier, and heading out into the PVP content/Star Destroyer encounter? Game's actually starting to become a game finally, even with all the bugs.

I like many others will maintain a moderate Hi Sec base to secure gains in and expeditionary bases in the Hostile zones to raid and resource from. I will also enjoy aligning with large/meta factions to hold high value territories from time to time.

It’s overreacting to think people who buy land claims with hard cash will have a significant advantage; there were not a lot of claims sold and there are not a ton of Pioneer owners. It’s not as if the Pioneer comes with tons of claims. Building structures will take resources; which will be the true bottleneck.

Worst org experiences I've ever had was in this game the amount of org leaders who are billionaires in game only cause there greedy af 8 different orgs all grimmy af the verbal abuse is insane esp if ur a new player I've had a org or two try to scam me into a ship purchase for the org org leaders pay you ass cheeks while they take a largest cut not to mention u spend 5k usd irl money and half them ships will not spawn they say they do and show u were to go but when u get there the ships are not there I've been dealing with that for the better part of 2023 with no fix in sight I need a full wipe for my account to be fixed the tools we as players have don't work for my issue once I bought my carrack any other ship I buy won't spawn something is messed up and unless we get a full wipe im sol
