This technique works well, however in my experience it's important to leave one branch to continue upwards (growing at between 45 and 90 degrees to the ground) otherwise the tree hormones get totally out of wack and the tree can decline. The tree needs some (not a lot) apical vigour to get the best results in my experience. I stuffed up a few tree's before I learned my lesson.

Thank you for the info. I have 20 different mango trees and I have yet to find the secret to better production for a small space home environment. I keep my trees small due to the size of my yard but want max production. I am definitely taking this info to try to improve my yield. Thank you!!!!

PS. All the experts I have learned from are from Excallibur, Truly Tropical, and Dr. Richard Campbell. They all know of Mr. Clift and his expertise. At the same time, I wish there was more science involved in fruit tree growing. For fun, I am going to try some trees with his method, some without and some branches with and without his methods. Lets see if it works. I am betting it will. Thank you again!

Hi, great video. Do you think this method would work for avocado trees in container or in ground? Thanks for sharing 👍😃

Yes! I saw an older guy on youtube some time ago out of Cali. With assorted avacados in his yard and he highly advised this and did this to his avacado’s and trained them this way as well.

Hi Adam, it is a vigorous tree, that is for sure! The tree has kept it's shape that Crafton and Rodger developed nicely, except that we have not been in top of pruning. No blooms and no fruit this year. But 5 flushes of growth this year. I just did a heavy pruning cut (July 2024) to bring it back down and will need to do a better job of trying to make it the shape we want. We will see what next year brings! Thanks for checking in!

I think the points that are being made is that staking mango branches forces the tree to create stronger branch unions to hold more fruit. Also, environmental factors such as proper pruning practices, water irrigation to mitigate drought, seasonal light, and nutrient management can affect the hormone release of the trees which determine new leaf growth, fruit production, and leaf abscission (or leave fall). Since hormone release determines whether the tree will grow leaves or flowers, manipulating the tree to stay small and horizontal could benefit fruit production.

Hello Eri Nya, on YOU TUBE , one has to be respectable which you are not. Both of these gentleman have more knowledge than you and hence your tirade and silly comment are not warranted. They are trying to teach something which we do no know. So please watch and try it out before making comments. Eri, you put a question 'how many mango trees have these people seen?' Mr. Crafton Cliff have personally seen more than 1000 mango trees and can name quite a few just by looking and smelling and tastings the mangoes. he is very well respected person in the field of Mangoes. He is consultant of repute and has toured all most all the mango growing countries in the world as a consultant or to know more about mangoes. He is a man of wealth of knowledge on mangoes and lives in Naples in Florida USA. People seek his knowledge which he distributes without charging any fees. I am sure you do not live in Florida nor know anything about mangoes. if you lived in Florida or if you were interested in mangoes, you would have definitely heard about this humble person Crafton Cliff. If you would like to more , please contact me or reply to this message. My name is Hershey and you may contact me on syephen84@gmail.com Eri, just for your info, even guava trees produce more fruits with this method

Don't know about mango, but apple, pear, plum, cherries produce fruit earlier when branches are more horizontal.
