In East Tx we have almost nothing but clay. I have found that broadcasting carrot seed where I want a new garden bed helps break up the soil if I'm feeling too lazy to dig because the carrots will grow in clay and do a great job breaking it up. I have a neighbor who uses fire ants to improve her clay garden beds. She shovels them in, they build colonies and then when she wants to plant she sprinkles cinnamon and they leave because they hate cinnamon. (How can anyone/thing hate cinnamon!?!?)

Thank you, Rob - much appreciated. I need to get another guitar and release a yam-based folk album.

I'd buy it! As long as it is pretty yammy!

A layer of woodchips is a good way to soften soil. ...If you can get your hands on any out there.

I agree, but it would be impossible to get.

We can't grow yams here, but I do grow a lot of sweet potatoes.... if I can keep the rabbits from eating the vines. I plant them in a long hill like what you have there and the vines just drape over and run out. They are so nice, not only good to eat, but all I have to do to store them is put them in a basket in the kitchen and they'll keep all year. I like your video.

How do the yams taste? Are they sweet like the false yams or more like a potato? Also, how is that grape vine doing?
@davidthegood7 жыл бұрын
Like a white potato - good, starchy, filling and great for frying.

I'm using crepe myrtle sticks for hanging nets over my kiddy pools full of veggys and earth worms.

You mentioned you used sevin dust. Could you also use diatomaceous earth? Would one be better than the other? Thanks for your videos!

hi, I live in Massachussets and spend about 40 bucks monthly on white yams. id like to try growing some myself. as you are aware our warm weather isnt long enough to sustain growing tropical plants. i have built a 4x6x6.5 green house. i wanted to know what placement grid will be good for planting yams such that if they do fruit, they get enough space to grow. i also wanted to know how tall exactly the vines get as i do not want to burn the leaves with grow lights. please respond when you have time. thanks!

You can put them on trellises that are 5' tall and they'll grow over them and tumble down again on themselves. I wouldn't plant any closer than about 14" apart. The vines can grow 20' tall but if you use small trellises they'll just keep wrapping around. Also, make sure they are planted in loose soil so the roots can grow fast and big. Good luck.

David The Good my growbed has 24 inch depth lined with heavy plastic sheet. I have drain in there as well. I’ve been reading that yams generally don’t like swamp soil. I have 2 inches of gravel at base of bed and then top soil to cover it all up. I’ll send updates of my progress. Thank you very much. I enjoy your videos . Keep them coming and again thanks for the response.

Couldn't tell from the video but are the ends of the stakes pointed to make it easier to get in the ground? Just sayin'. As for the pump house, could you mount one of your water catchment containers on top of the pump house, pump the water into it and use it to store the water and minimize the cost of the pumping with gasoline rather than spend the money on the rest of the water irrigation system repairs.

It would probably work even better to pump it up the hill a bit into a large cistern, then use that to water below with the gravity-based water pressure. I might do it if I owned the property.

I know it's an older video, but why don't you use worms for composting (as in composting worms, not just worm squatters).
@davidthegood5 жыл бұрын
No need. I used to have worm bins in Florida and Tennessee, but haven't bothered setting up a bin here.
