Part One: • Stalingrad, Part One |...
1942 All of central Europe is under the heel of the Germans. A member of the underground anti-fascist organization, Harro Schulze-Boysen, learns about the secret military operation "Blau", which gives the Germans the opportunity to capture the Caucasus. Schulze-Boysen reported everything to Moscow, but Stalin considered this disinformation. The German plan - to create an imitation offensive near Moscow in order to keep the Russians there - worked. Now, they decided in Berlin, they were guaranteed quick success in the southwestern direction.
Moreover, the Russian counteroffensive near Kharkov floundered - some of our troops were surrounded, some retreated to Stalingrad. Stalingrad acquired special strategic importance for the warring parties. For the Germans, it was an open road to the south, to the Caucasus and India, as Hitler dreamed. Thus began the 200 days and nights of Stalingrad, terrible and bloody.

@@ralphyznaga1761 In contrast to Batman, Superman and similar nonsense, this is a masterpiece! By the way, the best Hollywood actors, when preparing for a role, use the so-called "System". We mean the system created by the famous Stanislavski. Konstantin Sergeevich Stanislavski (Russian: Константин Сергеевич Станиславский; Moscow, January 5, 1863 - Moscow, August 7, 1938). Stanislavski was a Russian theater actor, theater scholar and director. He is the founder of the Art Theater in Moscow in 1898 and the artistic director and ideologist of that theater until the end of his life in 1938. As a great theatrical innovator, he had a significant influence on his contemporaries. His main source of fame and influence rests on his "System" of acting training, preparation and rehearsal techniques. A large number of today's actors, both in the theater and on television and film, owe a lot to Stanislavski's system. By using the System, the actor deeply analyzes the motivations of the role he is playing. The actor has to find a "goal" for each individual scene, as well as a "super goal" for the whole performance. So much for the "inferiority" of everyone else and the so-called "superiority" of American cinematography and acting, which is (not always, but most often) usually garbage! P.S It is known that during their careers, and even today, the "System" was used by actors: Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, Christian Bale.. Stella Adler was the only American student, which she personally learned from Stanislavski. She later founded the school, the Stella Adler Acting Studio, which was attended by: Mark Ruffalo, Judy Garland, Elizabeth Taylor, Melanie Griffith.

Man against man and no running out of fuel, the SS and German Army would have crushed the Russians. They obliterated 10 million of them alone. Germany lost due to sheer numbers of endless Russian replacements and Allied bombing of logistics. But yes, thats how you win wars. Fasicst will always lose wars because they dont like immigrants and immigrants add to numbers. Asians were fighting with Russia.

Russia film takes you back to the era and tells the story that history does not. I have read much about the defence of Stalingrad and visited it years ago. The scenes are shot in the contex of history from various points of view. I have never heard of the Harro incidence. I must read about it. The scenes are so realistic that it makes you think you are there. The acting is subreb and the supporing extras put their heart into each scene. And to think this is pure cenema not a computer generated movie. Thank you Mosfilm for posting so everyone can enjoy and learn.

I had this 2-parter saved for months and finally watched it in recent days, thinking of the Russian celebration of victory over the Nazis coming up May 9. And those of us who know history understand that that victory was largely that of the Red Army. I probably would have watched sooner if I had realized it was directed by Yuri Ozerov. I previously watched his Liberation and The Battle for Moscow, both excellent films based in real history, as is this one. And both available at Mosfilm. You actually learn something watching Ozerov’s films. As before, I was impressed by the scale and realism of the battle scenes, all done before CGI. The depiction of the spirit of those who defended Stalingrad is also magnificent. Great moviemaking!

When I was 12 years old, I read a book named 'the Battle of Stalingrad'. I couldn't forget that the battle was cruel, horrible and tragic. But Russian army and citizens defeated the Nazis and got victory. I am sure that the Battle of Stalingrad was the turning point of WW2 in Europe. The victory of Russia was not Stalin, the Soviet dictator but the results of the blood and sacrifice of Russian army amd citizens. This was very impressive to me. A good take on the Stalingrad story, and interesting to hear some of the side stories, like Harro and Irubarri for instance, because until now I wasn't aware of their part in the conflict. What was missing was more of the 1942-1943 winter and fighting in the sewers, both of which were extreme, intense, and severe. Now how Powers Boothe ended up in this all-Russian-made film is beyond me, but he played his role well. The actors' likenesses to the real people were also good, especially those who played Hitler and Stalin.

@@kratoleaf7619 Well, the West German film "Dogs, do you want to live forever?" (Hunde, wollt ihr ewig leben?, 1959) and the Soviet film "Soldiers" (Солдаты, 1956) can compete with this 1993 film for the title of "The best film about Stalingrad". Or were you talking about "The Enemy at the Gate"? Well, and "Stalingrad" by Fyodor Bondarchuk, who played Ivan the sniper in "Stalingrad" (1989), is not as stupid as it seems. the Stalindgrad in 93 with Thomas Kretschmann who has played a German soldier in atleast 5-6 films was the best. T-34 was awesome. The White Tiger was another. Also the film about the female sniper who visited the White House was well done. Russians have been cranking out some quality stuff. They have most of the best tanks for films left over from WW2. Although every time I watch this movie, I burn from its beginning. Because of its beginning, I think "Stalingrad" (2013) is better. Although there are films that are better than "Stalingrad" (2013). And I am silent that the German films "Stalingrad" (1993) and "Dogs, do you want to live forever?" (Hunde, wollt ihr ewig leben?, 1959) are better than "The Enemy at the Gate". But we must admit that the dilogy "Tired of the sun 2" (Утомленные солнцем 2, 2010-2011) is worse than "The Enemy at the gate". Even "Pearl Harbor" (2001) is better than "Tired of the Sun 2". And at the same time, "Tired of the Sun 1" (Утомленные солнцем 1, 1994) is a good movie that deserved an Oscar. And "Tired of the Sun 2" is a bad art house with a huge budget, which runs for 5.5 hours, and it is divided into two films.

And remember: Yuri Ozerov was ahead of George Lucas, Peter Jackson, and David Yates. And he was ahead of them in that he was the first to film a prequel franchise to his original franchise. And yes, if, that his "Stalingrad" is the second prequel to "Liberation". The first was "The Battle of Moscow". And yes, he also had a spin-off to Liberation called Soldiers of Freedom, which was before the prequels. And I don't know if that spin-off will be translated or not. But you should know about it.

Stalins name will possibly live forever, because he slaughtered 10 million + of his own people. Theres a reason his own staff watched him die on the floor poisoned without lifting a finger to help the madman. Everyone knows what he was. Just another hitler in a different uniform. The bravery of the Russain soldiers is what won "the great patriotic war". Stalins stupidity likely killed as many russain soldiers as germany did. Germanys war on russia was a war of extermination. They killed more civilians than they did soldiers. Make no mistake. The russain soldiers didnt fight for stalin, bolshevism, or communism. They fought for mother Russia and its people.

Amusing to see Powers Boothe playing Chuikov being dubbed into Russian here, as 5 years earlier he played a US Air Force Colonel helping to lead American partisans against a Soviet/Cuban invasion of the USA in Red Dawn (1984).

Thank you for this amazing movie. The key characters of the war are always cast very well in Russian films. One would almost think that was Stalin himself. Indeed it was odd to see Powers Booth. I was like; huh? I read afterwards how this casting decision came about when the Russian sought support from American film makers. It was very interesting to see the focus put upon the "Red Orchestra" resistance and subsequent trials in Germany. In the west, one would be hard pressed to even find a footnote to such events. The "Stauffenberg" plot always getting the attention when it comes to anti Nazi resistance. Wonderful to see a birds eye view of "The Motherland Calls" at the end of the film. There are few memorials to a decisive battle in history that can be compared to this one on Mamayev Kurgan.

Yeah, but even though Powers Booth doesn't match the look of Chuikov, the portrayal matches the character of the man. At leas the way he's presented in memoirs and the like

(I hope the translation is correct.)

And if we talk only about the films of Yuri Ozerov. Then his "Stalingrad" is weaker than his "Liberation", but better than his "Soldiers of Freedom" and "The Battle for Moscow". And yes, Sergey Bondarchuk Sr. is more talented than Yuri Ozerov.

the best Stalingrad movie came out a few years after this and still holds up today. The last one was too much CGI and reminds you off 300 with the fast then slow motion techniques. Stupid for non-fiction.

Especially when compared with the movie "T-34".

I'm surprised this film was made in 1989. My initial guess was the Brezhnev era in the 70's. For a Soviet movie of late 1980's, it was not ready for what was to come.

Apparently a Russian-American co-production (co-produced by Quincy Jones) in the Perestroika era, hence the presence of Powers Boothe as Chuikov.

Just looked up this film. Guess it was a Soviet/East German film, but they didn't have enough money to make it, so they went to American production company Warner Brothers for funding, but Warner insisted on some American actors in exchange for their help. And Quincy Jones also had a roll as a producer? Too bad he couldn't have gotten Michael Jackson a small part too, maybe as Russian sniper Vasily Zaitsev.

Powers Booth was a great addititon because he is the only reason I watched it. I had to turn off sound and read the CC due to the horrible voiceovers. Another issue was the use of black Nazi uniforms. They went gray when the war started.

Наивно было предполагать, что советская авиация не займет небо над окружённой 6 армией. Даже если, Паулюс сделал по своему и прорывался с боями назад. Его не кто не отпустил бы. Если даже Манштейн не смог прорваться.

@@user-it2jv8eu8q - - The first impulse of the surrounded Germans and their subordinated Romanians from Stalingrad was to immediately break the encirclement and move toward west. At first, Hitler agreed with this. But Goering comes in, dreaming for a great feat of Luftwaffe which will bring him glory. He convinced Hitler to let the encircled troops to remain where they were. In the moment of the encirclement, the Germans had resources to break out. They were preparing to move, they blew up with explosives all kind of storage that they did not want to leave behind to be captured. Food and ammunitions, the kind of goods that will be desperately needed later, when they were ordered to stay and fight.
