If you spend enough time in black bear country, you will encounter one that will try to eat you. Every year countless numbers of people are stalked, attacked, or killed. Your a lucky man that you had a firearm, or they may never have found your remains. Let this be a lesson to everyone that sometimes, bear spray is not enough.

What I dont understand is why almost every single video where there is a bear encounter whether the bear gets sprayed/shot or not, there is always a large proportion of downvotes. There is absolutely no pleasing "animal lovers". According to the "animal lovers" you are never to leave your house if there is an inkling of a chance at encountering a bear & if you do have a bear attack you, you are rightfully supposed to just lay down & die. You know, because bears are superior to humans & their lives are far more important. I doubt these people would feel the same way if it was their mother or brother who was getting mauled.

LOL. I know right. I have had a mountain lion in my backyard and we have a doggy door for my little French Bulldog we had at the time. I carry my 9mm not only to protect me but also my dogs. We have a pug and Saint Bernard now. But I'm not laying down to die if attacked by a mountain lion. And my dogs are my best friends so mountain lions better lay off.

When you are in the woods with bears you should put bells on your shoes so the bears can hear you coming and avoid surprising them. Also, carry pepper spray if the bear charges you. Research has shown taking these precautions reduces the reports of bear attacks because most bear poop now jingles and smells like pepper.

I've been stalked by a black bear before myself. It is a very unnerving experience. All these people saying use the bear spray, use the bear spray, don't shoot it. Well I'm sorry, they have most likely never even seen a bear, much less stalked by one. When you know it's there and you can hear branches snapping only catching glimpses of it as it hunts you, will scare the literal shit out of you. I always carry a firearm in the woods. Best not to take chances with wild animals that are perfectly capable of tearing you apart and eating you. I don't relish the idea of becoming a bears bowel movement. People please be safe out in the woods. Bears are nothing to play with. It is fun to see them, yes. Just remember that they are pretty as well as unpredictable dangerous wild animals.

I haven’t been stalked by any predators in the woods (as far as I know) I reckon there aren’t even a reportable number black bear where I deer hunt. They exist in small numbers according to what folks have gathered from trail cams. Worst would be a rabid coyote, too big or curious of a bobcat or the occasional boar…plus the 2 legged things you gotta always watch those :) But I wouldn’t want to be stalked by one of these guys. Based on what Ricky said below I will try to keep an open mind regarding such. No need to mix human ego into assumption. Im fascinated with black bear though. I enjoy learning about them. I also enjoy reading stories others tell of rarity regarding them. Cool story! Id probably be an adrenaline rushed wreck though. No one to blame. Its their house but we have dominion over them and tools like firearms to ensure we prevail. Could you even imagine a grizzly charging out of no where? Ive heard people say they didn’t hear the bear as much as suddenly hearing small trees and limbs loudly popping like fireworks. Yikes! Beautiful beasts and I really want to see one in person but, I remember how fragile the human body can be and how unreliable both adrenaline and predatory animals can be and say “No thanks but Ill watch a video instead” haha Cheers

I was stalked by a predatory black bear in the GSMNP in 2015 on the same creek, Hazel Creek, where the backpacker, Patrick Madura, was killed by a black bear in 2020. I was fishing up the creek when all of a sudden the hair on the back of my neck stood up and I spot a bear up in the woods above me out of the corner of my eye. I didn’t look up at him. I didn’t try to scare him off. I got my pistol ready in my hand and started walking normally back to my boat which was beached at the mouth of the creek on Lake Fontana. That bear paralleled me from about 30-40 yards up in the woods ALL the way to my boat. He was matching my pace step for step. I knew he might charge down the hill at me any second. My legs were twitching to run but I was raised on a horse farm and conditioned from an early age to remain calm around animals. I believe that conditioning was the only thing that kept me from running. It was the longest damn walk of my life. When I got to the boat I let it drift out into the channel and just sat there quietly having an aneurysm from all the adrenaline pumping through me. Hazel Creek is notorious for having bad bears. And by bad bear I mean a bold, persistent bear that is not afraid of humans and not easily scared away. If you ask about fishing that creek on any online fishing forum about fishing the Smokies, every response you get will include a warning about the bad bears or a story from someone who like me had an encounter with a bad bear on that creek. A couple friends of mine had a terrifying encounter with a predatory black bear there just a few days before Madura was killed. If I was a park ranger, after Madura was killed, I would’ve used that as an excuse to bait the campsites on Hazel Creek(specifically campsite #82 and #84) that are notorious for having black bears come into them and shot every F’ing bear that showed up. Hazel Creek is a big, beautiful, wild, remote creek that has fantastic trout fishing. I landed a gorgeous 23” wild rainbow on that creek but I will never fish it alone again. About 90% of all fatal black bear attacks are committed by lone, predatory, male black bears and 75% of those attacks occured when someone was hiking, fishing, or camping alone. RIP Patrick Madura

It's a small percentage but predatory black bears DO exist out there. I hike the backcountry of Maine - never came across a black bear but I make plenty of noise, which I am sure helps. I bring a solid .44 mag with heavy caliber rounds (JSP and Hard Casts). I also bring bear spray. .41 mag is a decent second option but you decide. Don't run hollow points, they won't penetrate. Be safe out there.

He was armed so that is good but he was hiking alone and that is bad. A bear has a very difficult time killing anyone (no matter how stealthy they are. And bears make Ninjas seem noisy) when two people are hiking together and they are both armed and within 20 feet of one another. I don't think a killing has ever happened if both points are being done.

This is why in bear country, one ought to carry bear spray (yes its very effective for the doubters) and if you don't feel safe enough with the spray, bring a shotgun loaded with slugs. FYI, in Alaska the wildlife officers carry exactly that against kodiak bears. I'm sure the Canadian wildlife officers do the same.

I’m just glad the woods were thick enough and plenty of debris on the ground for you to hear it at a distance that you were far enough away to fire the warning shots. Those foot pads are made for silence so they can get up on prey and then they’re so fast they can be on it in no time. He was doing the typical stalking behavior - no sounds from his mouth, no warning signals, the trying to flank you. That’s when they’ve decided to make a meal of you. The question I have is do they do this with other animals? Is the key to the behavior confusion on the part of the prey as to what the bear will do next? Or is it because with their movements they keep closing the gap?

@Vincent Price you have to stand your ground. Usually the bear will back down. My last encounter with a huge black bear l stood on my tippy toes with my chest out and arms up and kept yelling at him with a deep voice. He was too close to me to try to ease away or walk off. It is hard to not run. A bear thinks anything that runs away from him is food. Only prey runs from a predator. Another bear came out into the field l was in and got his attention long enough for me to ease over to my truck which l had left my door open. I was on a black bear hunt but it is illegal to shoot them in camp unless they attack you. You can't have a loaded firearm in camp unless you have a concealed carry permit and it can't be a rifle. I was hunting on federal land here in Georgia. I usually hike in over 8 hours from the road and truck. It is over a hour drive to the closest convenient store so you don't want to get hurt or injured or you can be in trouble.

I didn't see a bear at 10:41, the video is too sketchy. However, totally agree that people should be alert in a bear country and always carry a spray or sth. For all the people saying no need to worry about a bear, it's just like driving without a insurance. Check youtube video "beware of black bear attack" conducted by a professor of university of Calgary, and do a basic research about bears, it might save your life some time. I can forgive his language since he just undergo such a appalling experince. And for ppl saying "why he turned his phone off", it's a Gopro... Peace.

I heard black momma bears are NOT protective of their cubs. No where near how a grizzly is. I was in the Shenandoah with 4 others and we came around a bend and 2 cubs rushed up a tree and mother bear ran too, ahead of them. If that wasn't a dangerous situation where the bear would attack to defend then nothing is?!

Two rules for hiking in bear country: 1. Must be armed with multiple weapons ( Large knife, 10mm, shotgun), 2. Must always be with someone else that is also armed with multiple weapons. A bear can only attack/sneak up on 1 person but never two. I believe over 90 percent of bear deaths/maulings have had neither of these two points or only one of them. Good luck.

Just my 2 cents worth, but if you carry a GPS you never have to worry about losing your bearings. I also carry a PLB (personal location beam) in case I"fall down and can not get up". My "bear repellent" is a 44 S & W, if I have to shoot a bear I want more than just piss him off. One scenario where a handgun is superior to bear mace is when you're in a small tent. If a bear jumps you and you try to use the spray, all you'll do is gas yourself.

I almost my dog and maybe my life, when I decided to leave my rifle in the car, while I set up camp a couple miles from the parking area On the way back with my little Scottish Terrier (family dog), I large group of wild hogs came along. Thank God a blown over tree was available to run up with my buddy in my arms. The boss boar sniffed us out and trapped me and my dog on the blown over tree. The haunting words rang in my ears from my dad when I was a kid "Never go into the woods without your gun period". All I had was my Kabar. I thought I was going to have to throw my boy to one side and dive on the pig with my knife. Sounds crazy, but my family would never forgive me, if I let my beloved friend be killed. Luckily the head kept moving and the boar realized he had to keep up. He ran off snorting and angrily slammed into every tree to show his rage. I will never not carry again.

Man ... I " barely escaped a male Black bear 2 days ago .. I'm 24 . Grew up playing and exploring the Bush here in northern ontario .. The past month while prospecting quartz outcrops " with a sledge hammer , chizzels. And a rock hammer . Didn't know why but at the time . Just felt watched all the time :/ no matter where I went but didn't see anything . Mentioned it to my dad and friends but they laughed it off bcs I tend to smoke dangerous weed lol . But I found a decent outcrop worth pursuing! Spent honestly all summer man ...alone swinging a sledge hammer ( LOUD) .. looks like an old timers style mini mine . I randomly decided to go up the mountain earlier than usual. 10:30ish .... Broke a shit ton of rock ! . Quiet day .. Hear birds and squrells walking. After breaking up some rock LOUD- I started hand tossing it in a bucket while on my knees head down .. Just out of either luck or luck ... Because I didn't hear a thing dude . Just looked up to a bear in a puffed up pounce position ,hair up on its shoulders .. I yelled .. "Classic look big trick " Banged steel on steel .... Even swung my hammer at it as well as boulders ! . I ran as much as I could ... But everytime my back was turned it ran quicker. I was jello .. running literally for my life in steel toe boots ffs . Again out of luck bcs there's no other way I ended up at the radio tower. Bear not giving up . After hitting the metal building at least 200,000 times .. " it didn't gaf man .. Barely had the strength left to pull myself up over a barbwire fence to climb the tower and hit the only hollow piece of aluminum there which scared it off .. . I ran home without breathing and puked lol . It even took my jacket ... Lucked out Swung

Cool video. I have had a mother bear with a cub cross a trail just about 40 feet in front of me. They immediately ran off and it is one on my favorite memories but I was only 14 years old. I grew up thinking that black bears are one of the gentlist creatures in the world. But now I watch the KZbin channel "Scary Bear Attacks". We mostly have mountain lions where I live now but I am on the edge of black bear country and there was a black bear behind my brother's house just two miles away. I only own a 9mm Baretta pistol that I use as my concealed carry but of course always take it in the woods. If bear spray or fired shots alone didn't scare off a bear do you think a 9mm could save my life in the rare case of a black bear attack?

At the end of your description you write "Let this be a learning lesson that a firearm is more useful then bear mace". First off I am a gun enthusiast and a strong advocate of carrying a gun at all times. With that out of the way I must say that I would much rather use Bear Spray if during a dangerous bear encounter then my handgun as it is the most effective and then my handgun if the spray fails or if the wind is against me. My advice is carry both, have them readily accessible, and oh yeah, NEVER EVER RUN FROM A BEAR.

And here is the correction of the former statement: there was a black bear clearly to be seen for a fraction of time between 10.41 - 10.43 of the video footage. Watching the video in slow-motion helps to identify the stalking bear in the brushes. Adam is correct.

Very good point about bear spray not being sufficient for this type of encounter. And screw the concern about the warning shots. I was stalked by a black bear. First you should never run away from one. That's like putting a neon sign that says "Eat Me". Stand your ground. Also black bears do not protect their cubs like brown bears do. That really isn't a big concern. I live with black bears. They are numerous around my house. My wife and I were stalked in a state park and I didn't have a gun with me because it was a state park. I knew what to do. I walked away slowly making enough noise so that the bear knew I was there and knew that I knew it was there. I turned to watch for it as i was walking away. If they get too close raise your arms so you look bigger and do NOT back away at all. Make a threatening gesture toward the bear. Not too much. Just enough to make it think it will be in for a fight if it comes for you. Bear spray can be very effective. So can a gun. A 9mm is really too small for a bear. A .45 is better and a .44 magnum is much better. Be sure you can hit what you shoot at if push comes to shove. Don't panic. Use your head and DON'T RUN. Don't show fear. They are triggered by that.
