The best bear gun I ever had was a .25 ACP Baby Browning. My friend Paul kept telling me OVER and OVER that it was a horrible choice for defending myself from grizzly bears. Until one fateful day, I proved him wrong. We were out camping in Montana when a Grizzly came around the corner of a gully. Paul panicked! But I took out my baby browning as the Grizzly charged. So I took careful, CAREFUL aim... And shot Paul in the knee. Then I ran. Man, I sure miss Paul.

The first time I saw a .500 mag "bear survival kit" was in Alaska in the early 2000s at a Walmart in Anchorage. I thought it was crazy that Walmart was selling them. The kit included a big can of bear pepper spray and a whistle, which is funny in itself, since people in Alaska say the way to identify bear poop is to look for the whistle.

I find it so ironic that the bear is minding his own business in his own environment when we come along intruding, the bear is afraid, tries to protect himself, and we shoot him in self defense? I understand not wanting to get killed by a bear but isn't that a risk one takes when going where bears are present? There are also a lot less lethal ways to get a bear to back off. Bears are social creatures, have a family, and are often simply protecting their family from a perceived threat. What happens to the rest of their family if they get killed for simply being in their environment at the wrong time? I used to dive and was around sharks all the time. When they came too close they got punched in the nose however they had no interest in me 95% of the time. I would think most bears just want to be left the hell alone and don't care for humans intruding into their environment. Agree with C.H.U.D. below.

Always loved this bear joke: Be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter. We advise hikers to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled. Visitors should also carry a pepper spray just in case a bear is encountered. Keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea what bears are in the area. You can recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat. Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries and leaves. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper...
@kaminelson1277
@kaminelson1277 Жыл бұрын
The problem with bear bells is that they're high pitched which makes the noise sound kinda like a tiny animal. The best way to alert a bear of your presence is clapping since it sounds like something breaking branches to them and makes them think that you're much bigger than them.

@@JohnB-dr8sk it’s not so much they ignore them. It makes them apparent your there. Most bear attacks are when a bear is startled and doesn’t realize you were there until your within yards of it. Most bears avoid people. I’ve come around a corner in the woods and watched 800lb grizzly sprint the opposite direction like I was terrifying monster. Because in their eyes we are.

I lived 20 years in Alaska. 12 gauge was my bear medicine of preference. I know guys who carry some truly large cartridge handguns, like the .454 and .500 S&W. The most important thing is shot placement and contollability. If you are going to miss with all 5 or 6 shots, the biggest round is not going to help you. If I had to pick, if I was forced to, I would pick the 10mm or .44 magnum. Those are two I have shot and handled comfortably.

10mm is prob all around the best, there are more grizzly kills recorded with 9mm than 10mm though. That's not really saying anything though, doesn't mean 9 is better, means it's far more prevalent and can do the job but 10 is definitely without a doubt better, you can't choose when to get attacked by a bear so this statistic doesn't say much, but yeah 9mm is capable and 10mm is almost more than capable

i was wondering about that myself....would a 9mm be better due to the high capacity mags available and much less recoil than some of the larger calibers as well as it being a semi auto weapon? im from Kansas and the only time ive ever been in bear country i took two pistols, my glock 19 and a snub nose .38 special. Taking as few chances as possible especially with my kids around. A youtube channel called Scary Bear Attacks recounts many stories where people are just simply unarmed or underarmed in bear country. Personally if i lived in say Alaska id never leave the house without an auto loading larger caliber rifle as well as a pistol on my hip and a very large knife or two.

I noticed an anomaly there as well. In playing it over and over I do not believe that a complete cycle of the trigger occurred. I say that as I cannot for the life of me see rotation on the cylinder. Yes, there is trigger movement, yes, the hammer lifts. But without cylinder movement I would have to say that the trigger did not get an opportunity to fully travel forward to reset position. There are many instances however in real world of heavy recoiling handguns getting an unanticipated double tap. The scary part is the second round usually fires when the barrel is pointed no where near the intended target. Kudos to Scott for only sliding one round in during testing.

As an Alaskan with experience getting attacked by a grizzly, I am on the 10mm train (from an M&P or Glock preferably). By the time you get 2 or 3 shots of .357 or .44 magnum off, you could have dumped about 6 or so rounds of 10mm from a semi auto handgun. Maybe you can hit it the first time with one big round, but more than likely the stars will not align well enough for you to get good aim. All that said, against black bears, bear spray works great.

I lived 20 years in Alaska before moving to the Kentucky. Hands down just about every sourdough goes with a 12 gauge. Pump generally loaded with a tundra mix of 12 gauge slugs and buckshot. Backed up with a handgun. Either a .44 Magnum, .357 Magnum, or .45 ACP. Big caliber handguns are fine, if you can deal with the recoil and fire quickly enough to actually hit the bear, and preferably put it down.

@@fabienb1892 Can't speak to the snubnose, but I daily carried one of the standard 7" for 3 years. A case full of TrailBoss powder is quite fine to shoot, 340 gr at 1400 fps, and feels about like a .44mag snubnose to shoot. The limiting factor is not the powder burning (though it always wastes a fair bit, being a revolver), nor the recoil. The limiting factor in the loads you can shoot is the rifling twisting the gun _sideways_ out of your hand. It gets quite uncomfortable to hold on to when you get up into the 1900+fps range. Also, the accuracy starts to drop off as the muzzle jump (the amount the muzzle rises _before_ the bullet leaves the end of the barrel) is substantial and difficult to control. Never used modern pistol powder, H335 is plenty to make a loud bang and reach 1900fps.

So of all these short barrelled guns, I'd say that the 10mm performed the best overall. Has the highest capacity in case you miss your first shot, has the least recoil again if you miss your first shot, and penetrated all the way through and got sucked back due to the elasticity of the gel. Against a bear's noggin, I'd say it's sufficient.

You nailed it. 10mm all day long. Truthfully, any handgun will probably require multiple shots on a bear to take it down. They can take some real damage before you slow them down. Then factoring in fear response, time to regroup, and getting on target, I'd take the G29 all day long. With it there's so much you don't have to think about in a high stress situation. Plus, if you have to fire more than once, getting back on target with the Glock would be a piece of cake compare to those other guns.

I think the benifits of shooting comfortably with good follow up shots is better than carrying a handcannon that might not drop bears in one shot. Living creature kinda have a "well I am going to take you with me" effect after they realize they have been fatally wounded.

Man 10mm is so overrated. Someone once said that a 9mm will blow lungs out of the body.

Nice, Scott. I think this proves once and for all that indeed a 10mm properly loaded for big bears will indeed do the job.

It doesn't prove anything. It's been known for a long time the 10mm is sufficient to take down bears, the only people who disagree with this are wheeliegun boomer fanbois.. But there is something wrong with this test. If you look up the specs of those two ammos on the Underwood website the 44 magnum has almost twice the energy.

Sectional density and caliber of the gun (caliber as in length of barrel to diameter) are part of it. The shorter barrel is a bigger handicap for the larger calibers. I bet if he used a short barrel 357 it would have penetrated fully through the four blocks. For the record I carry a 10mm in Wyoming/Montana.

I live in rural Alaska, lived rural for over twenty years. I know plenty of Alaskan folks in their 20s and 30s who swear by their 44mags and 454 casulls over 10mm. You sound like someone who watches everyrhing TFBTV puts out😅

OKAY ALL, this is a general reply to each of those who commented on my comment. Boy does this topic get some folks in a tizzy. My remark/comment stand on their own merits. I did not address any caliber as being better than another. Clearly the 45-70 handgun and the 500 mag delivers the most on the target. I merely agreed that based on gel penetration, the 10mm is sufficient, if properly loaded, to deal with an angry Brown bear. Nothing more. Those of you who infer and then comment on things I DID NOT SAY are the ones with an issue. Perhaps remedial reading and comprehension instruction would assist some in grasping a comment. No one need to defend any personal preference. I DID NOT call into question anyone elses' choices, now did I? Lastly, will anyone comment on this retort of mine w/o using the hipster phrase "triggered?" Not at all "triggered." Just educating those with flawed inferences. Have fun kiddies, and try to be nice to each other. It's not that damned hard.

Scott. A new hand cannon has become available. Tis the .500 Bushwhacker from Magnum Research in the BFR series. Love to see you blast some ballistics gel with it.

I would tend to choose a reliable DA revolver in a caliber starting with a 4 loaded with hard cast LSWCs. I am not of the opinion that mega velocity is needed. You want to balance control and power. A good .45LC load should do the trick just fine. I wouldn't feel totally defenseless with the 36 caliber with the right load if that is all I had but I would prefer a bigger hole.
