Cannot thank you enough, literally, for your practicality & courageous willingness to openly share your experiences and viewpoints. You are a rare joy and an education to watch. I truly appreciate your determination to baldly speak and demonstrate what is clearly basic equine husbandry.You do have a very soft voice. Would you be able to consider trying to speak more loudly outside your normal vocal range that i might hear everything you say clearly? I'm so sorry. I just don't want to miss anything.

Thank you for these wonderful, super interesting and gentle videos. I've always wanted to live with horses, but ended up in the city. It is great to get to know these beautiful and funny characters . 🐎 From Canada's west coast.

He is very kind, yes, I did not check his color, only liked it a lot. That say it might be pearl.

Our 12 yr old stallion had stood and allowed shots or coggins until all of a sudden, he just went crazy while pulling a coggins. It was so bad we had to put old fashioned rope no pull halter for bulls on him. While my husband and I held on, our vet got punched in shoulder as he lifted us off the ground. A young wonderful new vet agreed to help us. He and I took our time. He wanted our stallion to like him, trust him. He ask me whats his favorite treat? I told him apples and granola bars and oatmeal cookies. Our vet took a bite of a granola bar, gave some to our horse, then he had my husband stand by his side and feverishly scratch his shoulders and whithers, he stood on opposite side and did the same. When our horse felt the pinch of the needle, I broke out a bag of treats, and he was so busy looking into the bag, he didn't realize he got the shot. Our stallion actually liked our new vet, and whenever he came to the ranch, he always brought a treat for him. Our horse got so comfortable with our vet, the vet could vaccinate him without anyone helping or being there to hold him. Our wonderful new young vet became our horses primary vet for the next 12 years to our stallions going home to Heaven.

IM tranquilizer, wait fifteen minutes, have him in a halter in the crossties in an enclosed area, use a twitch (Watson) if needed, and get it done. It's not the stallion's choice.

About horses I was just like your gelding, I was unsure of getting poked by needles.
@paardentango7 жыл бұрын
It is a stallion, and we do not stick needles in him for fun, but to be able to treat him in case of medical need.
@paardentango7 жыл бұрын
Also possible, but that does not work. My goal is to let the horse get used to it, learn and with sedation they undergo but do not learn. No aggression, no hurry, no violence. Same goals, different way :-)

Love your videos and your insights into horse psychology. I'm slowly working through them all. This one troubled me, however, because you had the lead rope looped around your hand. This is a dangerous practice, especially when you're attempting something the horse strongly dislikes.
@paardentango7 жыл бұрын
It would be dangerous when you do nit listen to the horse, or are un a hurry, aggressive etc. It is no problem when the horse has time to digest and you stay respectful towards him. This horse is a stud, and it would be easy to activate fighting. I do not want him to fight but learn, and thats what happens here. Just do my best. LOL

My gelding *hates* needles. We have to cover his eyes whenever we give shots. I cup my hand around his eye, kind of like a blinder. The woman that owned him before me said he fainted a couple of times. My guess is something happened when he was younger since he's been through a lot of owners before I got him.

That syringe appears to be the type I used to give my cat insulin. I could handle doing that due to fur covered area of penetration. I'm still squeamish about any other needle. Even in movies. Silly I know since I'm a grandmother and should have gotten past that.

My gelding flips if anyone comes near him with a needle. He had to get two shots a day for a while after a surgery and by the end he hated it.

About horses Do you ever advocate using a 'twitch'? I know it helps especially when clipping but is there a better way of calming rather than the twitch?? Thank you.
@paardentango7 жыл бұрын
Common sense, calmness and creativity are better and humane ways.

Having been through phlebotomy training: That tiny gauge needle you are using in the video, NOT painful! It is ANNOYING as HELL! As a tiny bug bite that causes the reaction to swat away an annoying biting bug. Once we are stuck with a large gauge, truly painful needle our brains retain that experience and associates all needles with "pain". We will have an "imaginary pain" when we are stuck with a tiny needle, an anticipation pain and we can truly make it be "painful" within our minds even though the site where the needle entered only itches. A "POSITIVE distraction" and a good nurse, Vet, phlebotomist etc is key! "Hey want this apple?" STICK and remove, less than 2 seconds. Horse won't know or won't care it was done. Longer sticks where the need has to be in the body for 2 - 10+ seconds to administer a drug etc. a longer distraction such as a piece of tape LIGHTLY stuck to the nose can do the trick or dangling a favorite food to be smelt and lipped at can do the trick. Don't let them see it coming! Keep the mind busy so it doesn't have the time or opportunity to "think about it". Anticipation is a MONSTER! Nicole you are adorable!

Zou ook wel een "magic apple" willen ;) Waarom castreer je Rociero eigenlijk?
@paardentango8 жыл бұрын

@Roneboontje8 жыл бұрын
+About horses knap dat je zo lang hengsten heb gehouden. Veel mensen kunnen de verantwoordelijkheid niet aan. Als je je paarden (misschien) bij elkaar laat maak je daar ook een filmpje van? Dat zou erg interessant zijn!
@paardentango8 жыл бұрын

So easy to watch because it's how it should be done! Some procedures are necessary and there will sometimes be a point where the horse will allow previous bad experiences to surface and problems will happen. You need to make your horse understand by this sort of training. Fabulous.

The chain that goes around the lip is called a "twitch" in english. I've seen them used in breeding, it's very painful. I never like to hear about castration. Maybe just sympathy because I'm a male.
@awuma7 жыл бұрын
Doesn't have to be a chain. I recall my Dad using leather ones, and the horses weren't too upset by it.
