This horse says NO, and it might be interesting to see what emotions you see.
I am not really proud on this movie but it is the way it went. I also admit that at a certain moment I lost my temper and school to early for the rope halter.
We succeeded, but there is something to work on. Next video: • Deworm party - same ho...

I like to watch your technique. Calm and quiet. Not hurting or causing pain just getting cooperation. I do much like you do. Using the wormer to touch the face and stroke the face. Getting angry is ok it teaches us to stop and slow down. Anger also warns us that we are being mistreated, so we need to use the brain not the brawn. Because it is done infrequently it takes more time.

As someone who has had to deworm full grown lions and tigers (with banana flavored horse dewormer which they HATED), I can totally sympathize with any frustration 😉 People who don't actually work with large, powerful animals have no idea how difficult it is to try and do things animals HATE, yet not upset them so they never trust us again. There's always easy ways to force animals, but those usually end up with the animals having MORE issues.

Nice video, Nicole. I've been watching you for only a few months and am catching up on your older videos. I think you are very wise, kind, and capable. I like how you defend yourself from negative comments, but am surprised you waste your time with some of them. I have learned so much from you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Sometimes I try on the opposite side of what they're used to so they don't expect it. (Right side).

I'm glad she showed this although I don't think it was a good example of what to do with a horse that has trouble with the worming tube- my horse won't take them for example, so I found some tablets and I give those to her in her feed, she'll eat them right up, makes it easier for her and me but if I HAD to do it this way I wouldn't put myself and my horse in such a claustrophobic space, I'd choose a bigger space with a headcollar and leadrope and then spend more time just rubbing it on the nose like she did but without actually pushing into the mouth, then I'd use my fingers inside the mouth before moving onto the next stage and wait for each step to be completed to the point where the horse is standing calm and accepting. Then afterwards maybe give a treat or a rub to end with something nice and positive so it's associated with less negative thoughts and feelings.

My mare Peaches HATED being wormed. You had to either be very very sneaky, or else it was a fight. At 1400 founds it was not fun. But apparently one time out of sympathy she let me do it with out a fight. I had gotten on her back (only halter and lead line, no saddle, no helmete) and had galloped her from the bottom pasture to the barn. Well, apparently this one time she tripped, and I hit the ground head first at over 30MPH (racing bloodlines). I lived because I turned my head and perfectly put my arm between the ground (hard August earth) and my head. Arm swollen, but not broken) But I can't recall that moment, nor the 2 hours afterwards. Mom ran down and found me crying, wet my pants, and the horse looking sad. Apparently I had a medium/severe concussion with mild brain bleeding. Exactly what football players get. I was home, but "not answering the door". I got walked to the barn and de-wormed Peaches.....which according to mother she let me do it without a fight for once. But when I asked a question. "What day is it"? Mom told me "Monday" I replied "Schools out, Schools out Schools out......." Repeatedly. Yea, taken to the ER proto. As soon as Mom brought me thru the doors I puked EVERYWHERE. Yea, they just looked at my Mom and immediately knew I head a head injury. 2 hours later I woke up fully! After getting lectured by the doctor how I could of DIED, a nurse came in (after puking again) and told me she rode Western and while Western riders "don't wear helmets"...after work she and 2 other Western riding nurses were gonna get helmets after work. Because "you look like Hell kid". Well I stayed overnight, got to watch Pandoras Box on NBC since doctors would not let me sleep! Since then Peaches seemed easier to worm. Heck, I discovered injecting the wormer into an actual peach and feeding it to Peaches resulted in no fight! I think she felt bad for nearly killing me too....... The look she gave when I got home was so forlorn............ I still rode bare back, but with helmet and only walked her from the bottom pasture! I learned my lesson.

Before this incident I had to tie her head down to "the post". Very securely. At 1400lbs, 16.2 hands, and mostly Thoroughbred, Peaches could be difficult to worm. "The Post" was where I could tie her head down and she could not move around a lot. But my near death incident made that unnecessary that day. Afterwards we discovered her love of fresh peaches off a tree. We would pop out the seed, inject the wormer, and offer yummy oats immediately afterwards so she could get a rid of the taste. Mixing wormer with oats did not work, but injecting it in a peach was acceptable to her, followed by her favorite molasses oats. If we did that, there was no fight!

Check the follow up. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6OmaJhnr6-oZ7c It took some time, actually only a few minutes, and now everything is different. Please be careful out there, helmets are to protect the skull. Please wear them. Thats all I can say.

I take lessons from a very good sorter,all tatoos and eyelashes, who is a realist. Along with rollbacks I sometimes learn tips. She told me to squirt the dose onto a couple cups of Integrity, then add warm water, a big slug of karo syrup, and bits of fruit. Stir. It works? Surely not! That would be too easy! But I tried it and they slurped it down, every drop. I told my sister and she said "C'mon, Qass, you've got to learn to do it. Don't let them get away with that!" So now I'm sneaky about it, but it still works. Don't stint on the karo, and don't try this if your horse has blood sugar issues. And don't tell.

So easy to put in apple flavour. There used to be one that was good, youngsters asked for seconds. Most are a raw chemicals smell, taste. Cats run and hide when they get a whiff of the spot on vials. They can smell through the plastic, it burns their skin and stinks.

I admire you for posting this video wheras you're not proud of it! If I can give you a tip, you can clean a used deworming syringe, fill it with some applesauce and do the same. So the horse will associate the syringe with something, well I think you understand ;D

I worked at a big cat sanctuary and we had to use some horse products for parasite prevention due to the sheer size of our cats. Try giving a lion banana flavored ANYTHING!! Lol.

+sonseere10 Ofcourse, horses are perfect, and there is a lot of wisdom on the internet. Guess you also saw the follow up, link in the description. Can I invite you to show us wednesday how you solve an issue. Then he is gonna be castrated and he does not allow a needle in his veins. I would be very interested to see you help the vets. Be welcome at our place

+About horses The horse needs to view you as the leader, the 'high horse'. Then you will have his respect. You do that by moving his feet, changing his direction. Look at the video of Monty Roberts doing join up. You accomplish that, and the needle issue will be no problem.
@paardentango
@paardentango 8 жыл бұрын
Ah like that, sorry that is to much nonsense. This horse has no problem with 'leader' crap. He is a very nice and polite stallion. And when you want to fight a stallion, general spoon, the chance is there you create a fight. Do not fight a stallion, and I am familiar with all the Roberts stuff. Does not work for all horses. Sorry just had the idea that your are somebody with wisdom, and not a follower of whatever herd. Hope one day toy will see there is more then book wisdom and commercial performances. Guess you did not see the follow up on this movie, where he takes the worm thingy by himself. Fear just does not always work, and negative reinforcement is not what fits horses. Good luck
