20 years ago I bought a 10 edition Scott album from the 1890s with hundreds of stamps from around the world many dating to the 1840's including a Penny Black, the first ever official postage stamp. I paid $10 for the album. I also bought an 1803 George V silver Shilling for 5 cents. He had a huge bowl of what he called "old foreign junk coins." and it and other not so junky coins were in it. I spent hours relieving him of his unwanted junk. But the stamps were my favorite and the only thing I didn't sell. I also got about 2/3 of a Scott #2 in pretty rough condition and a bunch of British stamps from the mid-late 1840's and over a hundred American stamps 1847-1860. In the album I found the very first stamp ever issued from each of nine different countries. I still have ever one and won't part with any and I'm not interested in what they are worth. If you look you can occasionally find something like that for sale.

You can tell that they knew it was fake. If there was any chance it was real they would not have bothered to look for faults with the lighter fluid and just looked for the grill.

With the possibility that this stamp could be another authentic Z grill. No one takes possession but me. That stamp doesn't leave my sight, ever
@Emperor-Wild-Man7 жыл бұрын
When lighter fluid is applied, if the stamp has "grilles", it will be visible at that time. You don't need to let the stamp dry, and look whether it has grilles or not via a magnified glass. You will need the magnified glass to count the grilles to determine which grille type. In this case, we are looking for the "Z" grille.
@nunyabiznez63813 жыл бұрын
You can count the grille or if you know the frequency you can use a perf gage since spacing on grills of the same variety are consistent. I've not seen a Z grille in person but I have a grille stamp and can easily see the grille with a jeweler's loupe. I personally don't like the lighter fluid method.

I was able to handle the z grille (encased), when my club hosted a national APS show 20+ years ago. Think it was owned by Mystic Stamps. My (imperfect) memory was that we mailed it back to them.

What I don't understand is that this woman knows more about the 'Z' grill Franklin stamp then the Authenticator !
@nunyabiznez63813 жыл бұрын
The authenticator was the man who came in and put the lighter fluid on it and he definitely knew more than she did. The thing though is she still got a good deal. She paid $25 for a $50 stamp and probably had a lot of other stamps in the album. Any stamp in decent condition from the period is worth a few dollars. If she has 50 old stamps in that album and they are all the same age and in average condition she has at least $300+ worth of stamps. Anyway, the first guy is only a dealer not a professional authenticator. I'm not an expert and even I would have been able to tell if there was a grille on it using a jeweler's loupe.

Then man traded a 4 stamp block of inverted Jenny's for the z grill Franklin...it's the only z grill 1Cent Franklin in the world considering the second one was stolen to never be heard if.
@nunyabiznez63813 жыл бұрын
I forget the collector's name but it was the Mystic Stamp company who gave him the z grille for the Jenny. I think the Z grille was worth more but the Jenny is more famous and I think they wanted it just for marketing purposes. I heard they had it listed in their catalog but nobody offered them the asking price. I don't collect errors so I'd rather have the z grille.

buy a stanley gibbons catalogue and spend a year or 2 researching and organising them. no point selling 1 dollar stamps individually, postage will cost more than the value. If you think you have some worth 10 dollars or more consider getting them appraised by a dealer, this will cost money but will increase their value. And just because the catalogue says the value is 100 doesn't mean you can put 1000 of the same stamp on the market and expect 100k.

Whats good having a great hobby? When there is millions of counterfeit stamps around you?
@cristianmindrut27844 жыл бұрын
there are those who collect out of passion, and there are those who buy and sell for profit. Those who buy and sell, are interested in hyping up items. to increase profit Those who collect out of passion, would never, ever, buy a shitty stamp like the one in that reality show Reality shows are the abomination of the desolation.
@nunyabiznez63813 жыл бұрын
First, counterfeiters only counterfeit stamps that are worthwhile to counterfeit. They are not going to bother with doing that for any stamp under a few hundred dollars. This is because the labor involved would exceed the price they would get for such a stamp. To do a convincing counterfeit job on one stamp would take 10-20 hours if you are an expert. So figuring someone with that skill would command a wage of $20 an hour or more then the cost would be $200-$400. Then the person who made it usually isn't the person trying to sell it. So the middle man will expect to double his money and if he just paid the counterfeiter $300 he wants $600. But if you are going to go through all that trouble then you might as well do a stamp worth tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. My point is that if you confine yourself to stamps with a cat value of under $500 you should be fine. Just understand that you should familiarize yourself with varieties that could be faked with minor altering. There were two varieties of a stamp that I wanted that a dealer had for sale. One was worth $5 the other with a missing line was worth $125. But the line was easy to remove using an exacto knife under a microscope I could do it in about 15 minutes. Since I always examine my stamps under a microscope I noticed the buffing of the paper that resulted from the scraping so I recognized it as a fake. it is likewise relatively easy to add ink in a spot to make it worth more. So for more valuable stamps, make sure that it has authentication paperwork from an expertizing service. Never buy a stamp over $500 without it and you will be safe.
