Should you get an electronic die cutting machine or a manual one? Computerized ones are more expensive up front but can save you mone down the road but only if you can figure out how to use it. what machines will cut fabric, cork and felt? If All I want to cut is paper what should I get? I will answer these questions in today's episode!

By watching your video and taking your advice I initially started with the manual machine with basic shapes and alphabets as I only intended to use them for personal use. Soon people wanted to buy my stuff as well and sale was great. Then the demand accelerated and I needed to mass produce multiple designs in varying sizes, which is why I decided to invest in Silhouette Cameo which allows me to convert my own designs into svg files in any size and cut them as well as clean cut any designs that I made with PixScan cutting mat. But both times I came back to your video before purchasing anything. You are so helpful and precise with your information that it makes your advice timeless. You have really lived up to your user name and have helped me (and many other I'm sure) in saving money in various craft activities. Thank you for all your advice and effort.

Hi Lindsay, First of all I love your bubbly personality, you are a pleasure. I purchased a Scan N Cut because of this video. I Love it. Now any computer image , stamped image of even my die cut images I can scan , resize and even save them for another time. I am not limited to images from expensive cartridges the skies the limit. Thanks.. I had held out on the Cricut machine because I could see the expensive journey I would be undertaking. I didn't even know about Brothers Scan N Cut until viewing this video and boy am I glad I did. This machine has opened a whole new world for me in crafting. Thanks again for the good advice.

Lindsay I just got the new cricut explore about a month ago. It is a wonderful machine. You can cut anything. You can also design your own files and cut. You can print and cut you can scan an image in and cut, and on and. Yes you do have to be connected to the Internet to use it but you don't have to pay anything unless you want to purchase a specific file that is within the over 500,000 images that are out there on the cricut design space. You can purchase specific files if you want just depends on what you want and what you are looking for. I spent around $245 for my cricut explore air and it comes with thousands of free files. But with being able to design my own images or download the free images from the web I have cut lots and lots of images and I have only spent $5.99 on files. The best thing about the cricut explore air is it will score and write as well. So for anyone looking for a die cutting machine and already have the Internet, which most of us do, I highly recommend this

thanks lindsay.i love my bigshot.i use it with funfoam and make my own stamps out of dif dies that i have,i dont have alot of matching stamps eather,but you can do so much with dif shape dies.i color my paper first thrn i run my shape through the bigshot.like i do that with the leave dies.and some other ones too.its a great machine and not loud at all.

Thank you. What I'm doing now is taking the rubber stamps off the wood and putting them in an album. It takes less room. What I did, stamped figure on white card stock and on clear vinyl (material store), took rubber off wood, applied glue to back of rubber and put the cut out vinyl figure on stamp, used a restick glue over vinyl figure. Next I took another strip of clear vinyl and stapled on white card stock across from stamped image, matched stamp to stamped image and put page into a binder sleeve, sleeve in binder. Was a lot of work, but cheap and it's working fine.

Love my Silhouette! I have gotten different non-brand housings and blades and other brand mats to keep costs down. I use my computer scanner to fussy cut. It's easy peasy once you know how and if your printer is working (LOL mine keeps trying to die!) Also use either a USB drive or computer with it.

I now own a die/embossing machine and love it! My cards are now designer! I paid £45 but will never buy another card as long as I live! It came as a starter pack which included dies and embossing folder and it has opened up my creativity. I design, take a photo then re-design before making any commitment with regards to the design of the card.

Lindsay, I use gel pens with adapters in my Cricut Expression. I die cut the black out or shadow of the image and then use a gen pen/with adapter to draw on the image using one of the layer options. This works great with Cricut Craftroom. Just another option for those of us who still use the old Cricut Expression.

Ok I'm totally partial to the Manuel machines. One reason I don't have to worry about a power source. Also the stamp store near me has a Manuel machine for public use. Best advice I ever got about die cutting. Reserve one plate for the cutting side that way you have a pristine plate for when you emboss. Could you do a stamp school about all the different platforms and what their uses are?

+Melissa W I learned that if you write DO NOT CUT on it, it helps to remember which one is the "cut" plate and which one should be smooth. I also find it is a nice surface that makes it easy to slide through the machine.

I"m only a very new die-cutting addict, but one of my new "rules" for purchasing dies is ifI can/will use it to make the shaker cards I've become obsessed with. I purchased a stamp/die set of a castle because we have lots of little girls who are all "Aunt Cin's Princesses" In our extended family - the set is perfect for making shaker cards, and since I use fun foam to make the layers, it's nice to have a die to make a nice, clean, pain-free cut! :) Just bought balloons for the same purpose, to use for the little boys. The balloons will be useful even for grownups and I can even see using the castle for some of the more "mature" princesses in the fam. :)

Lindsay, you are adorable, as ever! Like your necklace! I have a Cuddlebug that I have been using for over a year, and I just love it. In my very small crafting area, it has a small footprint. The handle screw wore out the first month I had it, but my hubster fixed it back on and used some screw-lock stuff to hold it in place. I like not having to be plugged in to electricity or the internet, and I do a lot of embossing for cards, and the Darice brand of embossing folders is extremely economical, and they are now coming out with prettier and more competitive designs. I have decided I don't really like Spellbinders thin dies, because you don't actually "cut what you see" like you can with the Sizzix thin dies...which are my favorites. I have considered a Silhouette, but if I have one more piece of tech I have to learn, my poor brain is going to explode....and we don't want that disaster in the craft/sewing room!!! So, while the rest of the world zooms ahead in technology, I am going to mostly remain the Midwestern farm girl I have always been, doing things mostly the old-fashioned way! But, this tutorial was really good, and I hope you'll continue to do more discussion of the machines out there and what companies have to offer. You have a good grasp of what's going on! Happy Days!

Really great advice. I wish I had known all this when I was getting my first die/embossing machine. I have a Sizzlets die machine (the mini Sizzex brand), a Cuttlebug embossing and die machine (my favorite), and a WRMK Evolution machine with motor. I haven't used the Evolution machine as much as I thought I would because the plates for it are 12" long and I don't have 24" of free space on my craft table to feed it all the way through without moving something. I just got the motor this week because I was waiting for the price to come down. With the motor attached I can turn the machine sideways and just push the button instead of cranking and that works really well in the space I have available. But my Cuttlebug is still my go-to die and embossing machine. I accidentally bought a Sizzex die on sale a few weeks ago and I remembered someone saying that Sizzex dies will work in the Cuttlebug. I took out the A plate and used either 2 B's or 1 B and 1 C plate and it worked perfectly. It seems like the electric cutting machines seem to be more for scrap booking. They look great for doing large titles for pages and long borders. The machine you mentioned that cuts out any image sounds terrific, but I agree--if I can cut it with scissors I do.

You can scan anything into the new Cricut machine and cut it, you don't have to only use their cartridges any more. Also HSN had the new Brother Scan and Cut today which will now wireless connect to the internet. I'm happy with the Cricut Design space. Julie Fei Fan Balzer has great Scan and Cut videos.

I own a sizzix big shot and a silhouette portrait. Love them both. The portrait was under $100 when I bought it. It is a smaller size cutter, but that is what I love about it. I can actually store it in a draw. I feel that machine is simple to use and most designs are 99¢ from their store. Very affordable to me. I was an owner of a huge pazzles machine once. It was nice, but kind of a complicating machine to work with.

I value and trust your opinion more than anyone on KZbin. You have made it abundantly clear that your issues with the Cricut and the proprietary issues and law suits happened in the past. I even remember you saying how happy you were that you were grandfathered in to continue using your machine the way you had been. I've never heard you speak overly negative about a product....ever. Even if there's a design flaw or serious issue you still try to point out something positive. I think people need to understand that sometimes a company leaves such a bad taste with us.....that we....as consumers can choose what companies we deal with and which ones we never will again. It's all about personal preference and it's your prerogative. I don't think you should have to apologize for your feelings and opinions, whether your issue was 5 days ago or 5 years. There are enough companies and products out there that we can choose what to buy and who to buy it from.

hi Lindsay I love your Videos and tutorials. I have the Cricut expression 1 and I upgraded to the Cricut explore Air. They have made leaps and bounds in the capability of their machines. you can upload your own images and svg files. I have over 10,000 fonts installed to my computer which you can fully access through design space. your Cricut Library, everything you have ever purchased. they offer a monthly or yearly subscription which is fantastic for anyone just starting out I still use it as it gives to access to a wide range of cartridges, images and fonts. There is a pen adapter where you insert a pen or a score tool. so now not only does the machine cut, but it also writes and scores. I have the Quickutz handpress and the Quickutz revolution. I don't really love them. The hand press is very hard on your wrists. I much prefer cutting with my electronic cutting machine.

I own a daily use a Brother Scan n cut which I adore. The latest machine can be hooked to you computer via usb but also has a built in wireless card. So you don't need to be tethered to your computer :)

Absolutely Agree, Cricut expression is awesome, as it's a stand alone, OR a computer connected machine. I have Just received my expression, and, also, I'm looking into the eclipse. However, I do not care for Necessity of Internet, But, I Love the Gypsy for designing my own stuff. I love my big kick... I am very fussy about purchasing dies and cartridges...

I just bought a Sizzix BigKick and I am loving it so far, used a 40% off coupon on it at Michaels. The first time I used my dies it scared me tho, lol, how they etch the plate so. I plan on making all my own Christmas cards this year, waiting for some embossing folders which should arrive today. I'm in Canada and the dies and embossers are expensive at Michaels so I keep an eye on their prices there and I'll use a coupon or buy them on Amazon.ca because the prices are often better than using a coupon at Michaels so there's a tip for my fellow Canadians. I own several die cut machines, one Cricut Expression, a Big Shot , An Anna Griffin Gold Cuttle-Bug, the OLD Red Sizzix and back further the blue hand squeezed Quick-Kutz. I hate it but I don't get rid of any tools. Besides if the power goes off I can cut out shapes from the manual cutters until it gets dark outside.We live in an area that rain storms or ice and snow can take out power lines so the electric cutters are useless then.I should add I bought all these when they were on sale and I also only do embossing on the Cuttlebug and cutting with the BigShot

You don't have to hook it to your computer is you have blue tooth, there is also apps so you can design from your smart phone or iPad. Good for on the go. Design and when I return home I cut. +SCRAPBOOKINGWITHME thanks for the info, I was using cricuts way back when the company was suing everyone so I guess it left a bad taste in my mouth and made me look at their machines with a grain of salt, they come out with products and they stop supporting them (Gypsy, Imagine) and requiring you to be online to cut scares me, if they close up shop what will we do with out machines, it comes down to trust and they lost mine long ago BUT I am glad they are changing their ways and keeping new customers happy.

I feel exactly the same way, Lindsay! They will continually keep changing and forcing people to either invest more or lose everything they have already invested. I am not giving them one more penny! Brother and Silhouette are much more customer-friendly. The error message on my attempted cut after their last "update" was "Oops, that didn't work! Try again or call customer support." WTF? No information on what might be wrong or how to fix it. Nice in the middle of the night! Sorry for venting, this hits a nerve. I pay good money and I expect the product to work.

Hi Lindsay, great overview, I have a Cuttlebug which is a wonderful machine. I also have a Nellie's Press Boss, which I would recommend for those who don't like a lot of cutting plates as you have a slider that change the pressure on the plates. For an electric cutting machine I think the Silver Bullet is tops.

What about dies vs punches. Punches seem much easier to use, but take up a lot of space. You can also get punches that coordinate with strap sets and it seems easier, if giver the option, to punch something 50 times over hauling out a dicut machine and running it through over and over again. Thoughts on this?

+laurettabear I only have basic punches because I have an electronic die cutter which I think is much cheaper than punches in the long run. It just comes down to what you will actually use. That is different for everyone

I am not sure how good it works. I have not used it. But if you know if it is a good machine I would appreciate the information. Imagine you mentioning buying the Brother Scan n Cut. That is what I did yesterday!!!! On sale for $299 plus the 15% off bringing it down to $150 plus tax so total was $172, well worth the price to cut out my images so I don't have to fussy cut them! I am so excited!!! I just wish I could hook it up to my computer so I could utilize my fonts (I have over 2500) and my graphics. That would be so perfect. I also have a Bigkick which I bought about 4 years ago and that is still working for me for manual die cutting. I agree with you about choosing well the dies you buy. Buying only ones that will get the most use is the best use of your money. Another difference with the machines is the manual can be used when the electric goes off, whereas the electronic machines won't (unless you have a generator or solar power). If one had a commitment to get a project done on a timeline, that could pose a problem, though it'd be highly unlikely.

This video has some tips that seem like common sense to me. I have seen so many people haul dies where I wonder how often they will use it. I don't see the use of buying them for a stamp you will only use once or twice and have a need to cut it out. I have seen tons of craft rooms filled with stamps and dies that are never used. Up to maybe a hoarding situation. I know there are collectors out there, but I personally can justify the cost for something I might use once if at all. I am perfectly capable of cutting something with scissors. If you are making many Christmas cards in the same design that is a different story. Or if you need something to have a layered effect etc.

After using a computer all day at work, I don't want to use it for crafting. I realize some people love--and are good at--computer-related projects, but it's not for me. I have the Big Shot (Big Kick is the same machine) and find it the best option for thick steel-rule dies, wafer-thin dies, and embossing. The Jo-Ann store near me no longer accepts coupons for papercrafting and die-cutting products, but Michaels does. They sell the Big Kick and accessories, so you can get a good price using a coupon.

I totally agree with you Lindsay. I've never seen a company that hates on their customers the way Cricut does. They wanted people to pay, pay, pay for their overpriced cartridges, did not allow coupons, did not allow people to share their cartridges, forcing you to register the cartridge in order to use it so they could make sure it was never used on any other machine, and sued the company who created software to allow users to cut their own files. It was only when people left in droves to Silhouette that they begrudgingly started to allow people to cut other files and their software was and still is buggy, jumpy and frustrating. They had to hire a new CEO because everyone hated them so much, they had to improve their public image. They try to act like all of that never happened but like you and probably thousands of others, I haven't forgotten what kind of people run Cricut. Their latest is their "update" that causes the machine to die in the middle of a cut telling you your machine has lost connection. It's attached with a cable! They won't hire people who actually understand programming, it's like they have no idea what they're doing. Now they are promoting this "Maker" which is nothing more than an imitation of the Brother Scan n Cut 2 but which will certainly be buggy like all their roll-outs are. I don't think anyone has to apologize for disliking any company's products especially after the way Cricut treated us all when they thought they had the market cornered.

Great video! scrapbooking made simple has some sizzix dies for $3 a piece. One is a puzzle maker, another tags, a 3rd birthday cake with candles, stars, and you would have to look at the sizzix super savers gor the others. Some boxes came too late for the annual sizzix warehouse sale. I shopped that sale. If you can be patient they have great sales.

The Cricut Explore is so very different from the Expression. I have both and I love the Explore. I have used the 'print and cut' feature to make home décor projects and unique stickers for children. You can upload jpg and svg files. They have a huge library of images and a lot of "make it now" already designed projects if you are having a creative block. I had about given up on cricut a year ago, but I am happy with my Explore.

Wow, so many things to think about. My friend had an electronic machine and had a lot of problems with it so I never got one. Started with a cuttlebug, but one day it literally broke apart. So then got a Sizzix. It worked good for 1 1/2 years then had trouble with that but the company fixed it for me. Now I have that and a new Big Shot Plus with has a cutting plate 9 inches wide and love that feature. Can do a lot more with it. And I do keep a colored No Cut plate for embossing and change plates quite often . Always get them when Joann's or Michaels' have a 40% or 50% off coupon. Edna B.

I sold my ScanNCut. The scanner so often didn't recognize what I wanted to cut and many stamps don't have proper outlines that the machine can read. I got the new Cricut Explore Air and I love it. You can import SVG files so you don't need to buy all their cartridges. The print then cut feature is amazing! I had the Expressions 2 and I find the Explore to be a far superior machine. I will probably never buy another sentiment stamp again. Will now be using my Big Shot mainly for embossing!

I have used a Cricut before with a friend ( didn't care much for it ) and after several years debating and reading reviews and so forth. I decided to go with the Silhouette Cameo. I love it. Absolutely love it. It doesn't take much to figure things out. Its the first die cut machine of any sort that I have owned. If I can't figure something out. I look on KZbin and usually 9 times out of 10.. There is a video with how toos.. Now my next purchase is going to be a manual/ push button die cut. Debating on a Sizzix Big Shot Pro, Cut Boss or the Tim Holtz Vagabond. I just hope it don't take me 2 years to figure out which one I want lol

But being it would be my first "manual" persay die cut machine. I say go big or go home ha ha.. But all in all I want to make sure I am getting my money worth when spending that amount on a product. I don't want to spend that much money and be very disappointed in it. So that's is why it also took me so long to get the Silhouette.. I did my research first and just wanted to make sure I was getting something good. I know several who prefer the Cricut over the other. But for me it just wasn't something I liked personally using.

I love my big shot and have not used my Cricut in forever. MY daughter on the other hand loves her Cricut and does not see any use in the big shot. So I think it's a matter of personal choice. I find the Big Shot quick and easy and I don't have to have power to use it. TFS

Lindsay I use the Big Shot the most, I have the Ebosser which is good for me with arthritis, because you can easily cut most things. For a beginner definately the Big Shot for versatility. I too would like a Scan and Cut but the chances of getting one of those is ify LOL. I agree that some things are just as easy to cut by hand as lining up a die. Cricut, I have the Expression the one that came after the one you have. I use it very little and have a ton of cartridges. Everyone in my circle of crafters who has one doesn't use it often enough. When I need a bunch of 3 1/2 in circles for a project it is extremely handy. Some of the new Anna Griffin cartridges make beautiful ornaments but again, I have to dust the machine more often than not. I tried a new cricut and gave up and sold it as it was too much for me and I am relatively computer literate. I like my old cricut for certain things but still have difficulty with sizing images. 3 1/2 inches in one figure is not 3 1/2 inches in another and I AM measuring from where they tell you to measure. My next major investment will be a scan and cut. I'll have to rob a bank. LOL

My preference is for by-hand diecutting. Unfortunately making embellishments and other shapes in batches of 70+ takes a LOT of time. There's also the issue of some of the more intricate dies sticking (which you addressed, but the solutions you offered have not worked for me), delaying the process even more. Paper punches have been my go-to expedient solution because I can squeeze them repeatedly without getting tired in the least, and I don't waste any scraps because I use ever smaller punches to make more diecuts. Perhaps someday my intricate punches will behave and release cardstock on command. :)

+angelhelp If I may suggest, if you are using a more intricate die, use dryer sheets. It does work like a dream, your small chads will also stick to the dryer sheet and you do not have to poke each one out, just look for it on youtube and you will find a lot of people doing it. The dryer sheet also coats the die and you do not have always use.

Have you tried using some wax paper between your paper and die the first time you cut a wafer die? This helps the paper release easily and puts a slight wax coating on the die so that it releases easily in the future.

+Marilynn Ellsworth I spent a couple hours "playing" today and think I've discovered the problem. As tightly packed as the "sandwich" was when it went through my BigKick, it wasn't tight enough, so the pressure on the dies wasn't sufficient. I cranked a bunch of cardstock through and was mostly successful once I added a piece of cardboard as a shim. The platform had to be on its thickest, then the plates with cardstock and dies, then came the cardboard... lo and behold, success! It's not perfect every time, but it's pretty close. Best of all, with added pressure, nothing's sticking! YAY!

Hey Lindsay! Great video...again! I've kept a watchful eye on the Scan n Cut since it's release but held back because I was used to the "ease" of my Cricut (mine is same as yours). I wanted to be able to just hook up to the computer and use all my great SVGcuts without transferring them to a memory stick, etc. Was even telling someone all this just last weekend....then....bam!....watching HSN and guess what Brother has done! There's a Scan n Cut 2! Lots of upgrades... and direct access to computer! Now all we have to do is take the plunge! Just thought you might like to know :)

Hi. I recently acquired a big shot just like yours and am only finding newer versions online that use "tabs". I only have the machine, 2 cutting pads, a white platform and some of their own branded thin and thick cut foam pads that I dont want to use. I ideally was hoping to use my own dies I have from other brands and no idea how to do so xx

I use all brands of dies in mine. Did you have the tabbes platform or solid older one? With either you will need the 2 clear cutting pads (replacements are available in a 2 pack for around $10) try cutting your die with the platform and two pads. If it doesn't cut well add a sheet or 2 of cardstock between the platform and the cutting pad. You might have to add or subtract sheets of cardstock to get the right shimmer but you can use that cardstock over and over.

@@thefrugalcrafter that is a genius idea. I have the old white solid one and using the 2 clear cutting mats but there isnt enough pressure to cut dies , they roll through with no friction. I wonder if another platform is needed. I will try the cardstock idea though or see if they sell the additional shims. Thanks so much. Xx

@@hayleygeek cardstock will be fine, you can use a piece of a cereal box (thin cardboard) too if you need more thickness. If you decide to buy a shim I recommend the Cheery Lynn metal shim.

I have a tip for you. I was watching a shopping channel and they suggest to lay your thin dies flat because if you have to many dies squashed together they may bend your dies. I have the same cricut you have with the same program and yep I just don't want to use it cause its so much trouble. I did watch your web show thing ... I now want a brother scan n cut. My recommendation is to have both a manual die cutting and electronic cutting machine. My very first manual die cutting machine was the the cuttlebug. It is cute, easy to store and was the cheapest out of all my machines. My next manual cutting machine was the fiskars fuse creativity system. the only reason I got this was to use my very large dies and because it was on clearance. My third machine is electronic, it is the brother scanncut cm250 which I got through Amazon.com . I love that it cuts my stamped images so I no longer buy any dies. It does not waste my cardstock because It scans the background and you just move your images around even on a used paper scrap. My most recent purchase of an electronic machine was the cricut explore air. I got such a great deal through HSN. I got this machine mainly for their scoring feature, but I have grown to love it even more because you can use non cricut brand markers, you can upload your own images as well as purchase their cartridges, and you have the option to connect to the cricut design space using an iPhone or iPad app. The android app is still in the works. Can't wait for it to arrive.

If you are interested in a A4 machine, you really should take a look at the Big sister machine from Cheery Lynn, I just bought it and it’s so nice. A4 size, all metal parts, adjustable solid metal rollers, it only needs 2 plates, foldable handle and very smooth to crank. It comes with 6 by 15 inch extended plates but you could buy the a4 too. I’m so happy with it and do recommend it to anyone! It came with a bag but I think that was a special offer.

I have loved your take on stamping and the way you make it fun even for those of us that have a bit more experience. excellent on the die cutting today though I have noticed your collection of thin dies have increased some through sponsorship but suspect you slip the odd bargin in your basket. just an add on you can get electric die cutting machine Tim holtz has one don't recommend "my opinion only" but cut n boss is A4 size for people who have the thicker dies it works great and no stress on joints muscles ect. I started with the cuttlebug and it still pops up but my desk . my die cutter is the xcut machine very similar to the cherry Lynn manual A4 machine only 3 plates takes every die on the market and strong but folds up and away when not needed. I keep mine on my desk as its so useful. my God not been this chatty for ages regards Paul in London. Just to let you know I'm now in therapy due to the rareness of AAC time. Who do I send the bill too. 😀

Lindsay... take a closer look at the silhouette and it's designer edition software. I'm still discovering it's features, but it's very versatile... today I took an easter egg and easter basket clipart and brought it in the software now I I have he ability to cut it with material, paper or whatever. Could also use the pens and make a drawing. Revisit this as compared to the brother scan and cut.

And another thing to look for in an electronic die cutting machine is how thick of materials can it cut and whether you want it for print and cut. Julie Flanagan on KZbin might be a good person to check out. she owns many of the machines out there and has done different comparisons. I has an expression and a KnK Zing. I like the Zing but certain things about it have made me disappointed. It does a pretty nice and precise cut and print and cut.

I found the new die cutters from ArtCo at Hobby Lobby for $19.99. What I find unique is they are in pieces and you connect them to form over 24 different sizes and styles. You can buy their other sets that form over 24 other shapes...and you can mix-n-match all the sets for unlimited imagination. : )

I have not used it but it is probably a good idea if you have a hard time cranking the dies through. I have had this machine for over 8 years and it won't quit so I am sticking with this:)

Hi Lindsay! I don't think you being unfair to the cricut expression 2 at all. I have the same one you own and I have never really liked it. I wish I had spent more time researching different machines before I purchased the circuit. I honestly do love my cuttlebug for the ease of use. I however will try to never buy a provo craft machine again due to the ugly lawsuit against make the cut and sure cuts a lot. I never really liked the cartridge system for the cricuit and felt were way over priced as I typically only cared for 1 or 2 of the cut files on them. thank you for the suggestion on the matt. I need a new one and was not looking forward to paying an inflated price. I also use the roland blades and they are much cheaper and last a long time. Thank you for the time you spend making videos as I always enjoy watching them.
