Season 2 tells me there was always a huge plan for the show but we still had to get used to this world so season 1 is more of just an intro like you said. Season 2 is when they finally got to execute their idea for GF.

Wendy is actually less than 3 years older than Dipper. She's 15, Dipper will turn 13 at the end of the summer. Just throwing that out there. I'm not saying that it's not enough of an age gap to be a problem, just that a lot of people exaggerate it TOO much. Dipper is too young for Wendy, but he's not a little kid, and she's not quite as old as she looks.
