Stan Kenton - Stan Kenton Today (1972) [Complete 2 LP Album]

One Of Our Deleted Albums Series
Stan Kenton (1911-1979) released this 2 LP album in 1972 on the London Phase 4 Stereo label, catalogue number BP 44179-80. It has since been deleted, along with all the other recordings on that label.
This album features a live performance by the Stan Kenton Orchestra, recorded in London.

My in laws absolutely loved Stan Kenton, luckily they saw him live at Sheffield city hall UK in the 1970s

This is absolutely my asll time favorite live concert album. I've still got it. I also was able to digitize the CD from this conert "Stan Kenton Today, Live in London"

I was fortunate to have seen him and his great orchestra in NYC at the Riverboat nightclub in the Empire State Building in 1975. Tremendous band performing great music.

I love this album so much, I have TWO copies! I have listened to it literally hundreds of times since I was in high school starting in 1972. Sad that it was deleted. Thanks for posting this video! I was also fortunate to have attended a Stan Kenton Jazz Camp in high school in 1973, right when Peter Erskine replaced John von Ohlen as the band's drummer. I was infatuated with "The Baron"!

Yes! If one is to get a single album that captures Kenton's essence it is Kenton in Hi-Fi. Great Pete Rugolo arrangements and all of his greatest musicians. Maynard, Pete Condoli, Milt Bernhart on T-bone, Lennie Niehous on sax. I grew up hearing this throughout my childhood and it made an indelible impression on me and shaped my playing as a muscian. Enjoy.

Ray Brown, solo jazz trumpet. Dick Shearer, lead and jazz trombone. Quinn Davis, alto. Richard Torres, tenor. Willie Maiden, baritone sax. Mike Vax, lead trumpet. I think Chris Gualman is on tenor 2. John Worster, bass. Mike Wallace, bass trombone. Dennis Noday, 2nd trumpet. Chuck Carter, baritone and soprano sax. There were some significant changes in the personnel after this European tour.

Another musician that could be mentioned is Ramon Lopez, conga drum. A small correction. Jay Saunders is on lead trumpet. By this time, Mike Vax had moved to third trumpet, the so -called “Maynard” or high-note chair. I have the full personnel here. If I remember, I’ll post it. This album was widely distributed and helped make a whole lot of Kenton fans in the 70’s, including me.

@@johntapscott4528 You are correct. Jay Saunders and Ray Brown came on the band shorty after completing their hitch in the Army. Mike Vax moved over to 3rd. Mike Jamison and Fred Carter were still on the band on tenor trombones. I think it's Phil Herring on the 4th bass trombone. Wallace played 5th. Joe Marcinkiewicz is on 4th trumpet.
