Stan Laurel statue unveiled

Stan Laurel, half of the enduring film comedy duo Laurel & Hardy, was not born in Bishop Auckland but he was baptised at the local church & went to Bishop Auckland Grammar School. His father Arthur Jefferson was the manager of the Eden Theatre in the town. On Saturday 30th August 2008, Stan's niece Nancy Wardell unveiled the statue, which stands on the site of the Eden Theatre, known as "Theatre Corner." The statue, which shows Stan in typical pose, was designed by Tyneside artist & Sculptor Bob Olley. Musical accompaniment by the West Jesmond Rhythm Kings. Very sadly the lovely, sweet and good-humoured lady Nancy Wardell died on June 23rd 2016. Much loved and much missed. She was not Stan's niece but the daughter of Stan's cousin, more usually referred to as second cousin.

Thank you for sharing this. It is nice to see The Boys finally getting some of the long-needed recognition they deserve. I'm also glad to see that more people are discovering Laurel & Hardy for the first time. Just goes to show you that The Boys are still as popular as ever, even 60+ years later! Cheap, clean, and goofy comedy, they don't make great comedians like this anymore. The guy could make 5 minutes of nothing absolutely hilarious.

Yes, he was born in what is now Argyle St., then Foundry Cottages. There's a plaque over No. 3. As a boy, he loved to fish in the canal and sit on the lock gates enjoying his favourite Beer's treacle toffee from Gillam's, which is still there in Market Street.
