+comanchio1976 No, Hardy was born in the US and they ended up meeting in Hollywood when by accident they were placed in the same film. Their talents clearly placed them above the level of their fellow actors and they began to play larger roles till they became the stars. There was no "planned" Laurel and Hardy, they just happened as time went on and people swarmed to see their films.

is it not with a fear of impending doom, that actors find they have been given a 'lifetime achievement' award?. for all that they achieved in their prime, they were consistently ignored. So that when they are actually given an award, it's just out of sympathy, or because they are still alive!

I did read one interesting thing not long ago. Oliver had a stroke and couldn't speak for the last several months of his life. Once or twice a week stan would come over to his house and go back in the bedroom where he was and hang out with him. Oliver's wife said that even though Oliver couldn't speak, she would hear them laughing together back there. my understanding is they worked on a silent movie together but not as a team but they hit it off and became friends before they were teamed. they were unique in that they actually really liked each other. they also both seemed intelligent and very civilized and so got along.

That's genius. See them dance together and you will start the day with a smile on your face. Sorry that he wasn't there to accept his award in person. I'm a 70s child and grew up with Stan and Laurel on Saturday TV. Adored them, never forgotten them. Charisma, talented and fore-runners of comedy today (and always will be), who are both funny, and true professionals on stage and cinema. They have both provided - and will continue - humour and entertainment in many guises during times of The Great Depression and through World War II for 24 years. A truly remarkable feat. I have shown my child of age 11 lots of Laurel and Hardy features and she adores them. Keep the torch going I say. We need some cinemas around UK to show these old movies of L&H, Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin and a host of others I've not mentioned, to keep their spirits alive. Other late comers in the comedy genre include my personal favourites of Abbott and Costella , Danny Kaye, Robin Williams (RIP) and many others who carry the comedy performance on TV and movies. They keep us happy, make us feel good and forget our troubles - just for that moment - and gives us hope. A beautiful speech by Danny Kaye.

When you watch any of Laurel & Harry movies today, they are timeless & still funny. You only realise, whilst watching their movies & shorts, Stan's creativeness was so typically the British humour of the time, Ollie was a master of skill & wit, Stan the penchant for looking at life & dealing with it, always in trouble but never killed anyone, accepting his limitations... Today's comedy can't touch them, because everything would be either offensive or misunderstood. Magical...

The first time I was brought home after I was born was only 6 houses away from The Music box steps. In 2008 I went back there and walked the neighborhood for the first time since I was a year old in 1960. I stopped a lady walking her dog and just asked her if she lived there for a long time. She did not and I was talking about the steps in front of us and she just started gabbing up a storm. Come to find out she watched for the first time The Music Box the night before. We stood there and talked like old friends. She said she walked by the steps many times not knowing about them. I told her how my sister and brother would play on them and catch the school bus on top of the steps. We smiled laughed and shook her hand, petted her dog, took pictures and left her and the neighborhood. A wonderful memory.

Everyone in Hollywood who knew the facts, knew that Stan Laurel was the funniest. With the comic field so very crowded, back then, the genius waited behind a veil, until it could be expressed through a comedy duo, with Oliver Hardy. Keaton was terribly clever. Chaplin was sublime. Lloyd had reliable, scientific precision. But the gags from Stan Laurel, developed behind the scenes, tended to engulf you. I showed BIG BUSINESS to a brash teenager and he lost his mind.. He rang his buddies far away and urged them to see it. They viewed it 5 times over. Stan Laurel's stuff is the gift that keeps on giving.

Though the creative force behind The Boys was Laurel, I remember hearing him say that he knew Hardy would make it better by just being Ollie. He was the master of the slow burn, the precise hand movements, the pompous attitude and the perfect foil. So, giving the achievement award to Laurel, by proxy, was awarding it Hardy as well.

What I loved the humour of him and I still love that humour still today. What did he once say: "If any of you cry at my funeral, I'll never speak to you again!"" Shortly before he died, Laurel told his nurse that he would like to go skiing. The nurse said, "I didn't know you were a skier. Are you a skier, Mr Laurel?". He replied, "No, I can't either. But I'd rather ski than have these needles stuck in me". A few minutes later he died quietly in his armchair.

Let's be perfectly honest here. They never had. Now fair enough they have some integrity and haven't devolved into some popularity contest where people can vote for their favorite by phone, but the Academy rarely rewarded the true pioneers and those who broke new ground. None of those mattered until they were signed by some huge studio and had that "perfect role" assigned to them.

I met Danny Kaye 1 on 1 on Okinawa around 1965. I got his autograph, he was very kind and friendly to me, just a random 8 year old kid. He was a very talented man as well. Mr. Kaye can I have your autograph? "Sure son, what's your name?" To Lester Hello Danny Kaye. My punk brother ransacked all my stuff when I went in the Air Force in '74. I never saw it again. But I remember that day.

It may have been another award.... or this one...even though he was said to be "unwell"...but I heard that Stan said he wouldn't accept an award such as this, unless everyone who helped him to get where he was, was on stage with him. The mark of a pro and a gentleman.

Ahhh... Back in the day when the Academy Awards were presented in white tie-and-tails... Danny Kaye's speech is elegantly eloquent in tribute to Laurel, and note what happens when Hope hands Kaye the Oscar, with complete sincerity and decorum: Laughter. Those two could not help but be funny, even when they were being serious.

Fact is, that Stan Laurel in his greatness did not want to receive this life time award without having all the others who helped make it happen being present. R.I.P. Stan Lauren & Oliver Hardy, et all and may God have mercy on your souls. NB: The Academy should have thought of that earlier on, when others still where alive.

The Academy must begin to view comedy as a contributor to the advancement of the screen arts. Beyond honoraries, it needs to recognize comedic actors, writers, directors, and pictures for the unique art forms they bring to our lives everyday. If not, I suggest that the comedy world host its own "serious" award show and put their own spin on the art of "selecting" the "best."

I think Danny was great too - but never made me laugh. (not being a fan of slapstick). But whenever I see him now, he reminds me that he and Laurence Olivier had a fairly long term affair. There are some things about famous people better left private - and here I am - being unkind in mentioning something that I didn't want to know......Sorry to those who didn't know. It just was such a disappointment.

When James Cagney and Charlie Chaplin received their honorary awards, there were still many legendary performers in the audience. Stan Laurel is honored by having Bob Hope and Danny Kaye speak on his behalf. Flash forward to the present, and we have a lot of low-quality entertainers who all seem to be on an ego trip. My last book was released in the spring of 2012. My publisher's promotional department told me that for $3,500 they would send my book to their Hollywood people and a screenplay writer would adapt the book for a script and try to sell it. They asked me, quite hopefully, "Would you like to see your book made into a movie?" I said "no." I told them that Hollywood didn't have what it tales any more to make a good movie from it. Sorry for the sour grapes - but it is so sad that all of the great talent has died and Hollywood is left with rubbish.

There is no ego in my reply. I related a simple true experience. I am a fan of the older Hollywood. I never watch the modern-day rubbish. It is not an expression of ego so much as a proclamation of disappointment.

Fair enough. I am very old fashioned. I remember Fay wary telling a TV show host that in her heyday, the 30s and 40s, people wanted thought stimulating material in the movies, while today (at the time the 70s) people wanted physical stimulations such as sex, blood, violence, etc. Believe me, it just isn't possible for Hollywood to make a good movie out of my book because it was written to avoid the sort of things that Hollywood is infected with; such as sex, gory violence, profanity, etc. Any Hollywood production of my book would be perverted by the industry - I am sure of it. Hollywood just does not have the decency to make a good movie out of my book. You see, it concerns a group of explorers in 1899 becoming trapped in a legendary Bulgarian castle concealed in a gorge, only to find they can't get out, and that it is a favorite spot for the devil to make his way into the world before inaugurating a new evil scheme. It is heavy on dialogue and that certain element of mystery and discovery. There is also about a dozen poetic passages. The book takes the event of several people being trapped in that castle and engaging in a battle of wits to save themselves. No one today wants what could be called an intellectual exercise on such a subject. Hollywood would certainly add sex, profanity and a lot of blood and gore and computer generated graphics. There are scenes that could be called "action" scenes, but Hollywood just can't produce them in good taste anymore. It is an unfortunate truth that America is a lot less gracious as we use to be.

Thanks for the gracious response. If you are considering buying my book, it would be best if you have nook or kindle to download it. The physical book is overpriced. This is not to enrich myself because if you get the e-book, I'll get a whole 98cents royalties on it! It is called Winter Solstice, and you will probably have to add my last name Caldarola if you search for it on Amazon or Barnes and Noble. If you decide to buy it, can you do me a huge favor? Use the "print screen" button on your computer to copy the page showing the finalized purchase and attach the jpeg to an email and send it to my. I have long suspected my publisher is withholding royalties. If I can prove it, I may proceed with legal action against them. Thanks.

Even though Stan was unwell, he probably wouldn’t have attended the ceremony anyway if he had been healthy, because he didn’t want to appear in public without Oliver. They had a special bond and they made magic together. Stan always referred to this award as “our Oscar,” never “my Oscar.” Danny Kaye’s speech is so touching and on point about their universal appeal. Stan himself wrote in a letter that he was moved by his words, as he watched the Oscars on TV from his home. Stan and Oliver both deserved to have these Honorary Oscars; this honor was extremely belated. They are the greatest of all time in the comedy field. ❤
