This is song is much more sophisticated than most people realize. It's not a song about history but about current events, at least current at the time. In the 1970s the cod fisheries collapsed and many fishermen lost their jobs in the Canadian Maritimes. To find work, many of them, including some of Stan Rogers relatives had to move to western Canada to find work in the Alberta oil fields or in the Vancouver area. Stan Rogers was a master at putting himself in the shoes of someone else. In this case it's a jobless Maritimer heading west to find work. And yes, the names he mentions, John Franklin, David Thompson, Alexander Mackenzie, Simon Fraser, and Henry Kelsey were all real folks who opened up the Canadian West.

@@troutfisher7182As a Maritimer, I can not listen to “The Idiot” without tearing up. The decades old story of the east losing their greatest resource, people, to build the west to what it is now because they were fortunate to have such a valuable commodity, oil. Yet we are still looked on with derision.

Stan Rogers was one of the great Canadian singer/songwriters. This is a song recounting the search for the northwest passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific through the Arctic. Stan had many, many great songs. He died saving passengers from a burning airliner in the mid-1980s. |Explore him more and you will be amazed. There is a folk festival named in his honour in Canso, Nova Scotia. He was from Ontario but spent much of his time in Nova Scotia where I live. He's a legend.

I almost fainted when I saw Stan Rogers' face on reaction video. You have made my Christmas. Stan was a gem, and not just talent-wise. He was an amazing man too and was taken too young. They say that Stan made it out of the plane when it landed and caught fire, but he heard others crying for help, and in those days, there were no emergency lights within, so people couldn't see through the smoke, so he turned back to try and save people... people said they saw a big big man just helping people get to the exit, but he never made it back out. There is a beautiful rabbit hole for you to go down. Northwest Passage is stunning, but you will also love The Field Behind the Plow, Lockkeeper, White Squall, Tiny Fish For Japan, Barrett's Privateers, The Mary Ellen Carter, The Idiot, and oh, the songs go on and on... there is a festival every summer down East... Stanfest... seriously... this man, his amazing writing and that golden voice... what would he be doing now if he had lived?

A wonderful Stan Rogers song! But it does always amaze me that people brought up in the UK or Europe are unfamiliar with the Northwest Passage and its history. I doubt that the powers that be at the time would have funded explorers to discover northern Canada in the 1500s. They were trying to get to Asia and and all the wealth that the control of the spice trade would entail. Canada was merely a by-product of these attempts to find a shorter route to the riches that Asia promised. Of course, early explorers found many other valuable resources en route in the land that we now know as Canada. 🇨🇦 Here is a short doc about the hundreds of years of efforts spent to "find" the Northwest Passage: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYq6gWmBqLt3jbM

To call it sad…i don’t think so. It’s melancholic, for sure, but i feel more like it’s a song of awe and deep respect. It’s about exploring, and discovering for the first time in ease what so many before had to suffer and die to even have a hope to see. The part of the chorus, “to find the hand of Franklin reaching for the beaufort sea” is an homage to John Franklin, the Captain of the Terror of The Lost Expedition. There is a show about it that is incredibly well done.

I'd been looking for a song to introduce some Americans to Stan Rogers, and I decided this song was maybe not the right one. To Canadians, the search for the Northwest Passage is a foundational part of our story, but people from other countries don't even know about it, understandably. So many of Stan's songs are SO Canadian. Anyway, I sent them "Lock-Keeper", as it's a great introduction to his voice.

I got into punk and metal and played in the genre but never ever closed the door on any genre of music. Stan's voice is something instantly recognizable to Canadians. He's a national treasure. His brother Garnet, is an absolutely brilliant musician and singer/song writer. The story of the explorers and the search for the North West Passage is well documented. Stan had an understanding and love for this country that wasn't a jingoistic flag waving patriotism but a true love of the nation good and bad.

The narrator/voice of the song is driving west across the plains of Canada and through the Rocky Mountains to then follow the route sought by the early explorers (Mackenzie and Thompson) down the mighty Fraser River to the sea. He thinks also of the Arctic explorers specifically the Franklin Expedition which sought to find the Northwest Passage sea route to the Pacific and juxtaposes his journey west with theirs. Alexander Mackenzie and David Thompson both explorers who braved the uncharted Rocky mountains searching for the overland route from eastern Canada to the Pacific West Coast. Thompson was the first European to journey the length of the Columbia River to the Pacific in about 1811. Mackenzie reached the Pacific coast in today's British Columbia and carved on a rock "...from Canada by land 22nd July 1793."

You really need to know some Canadian history to understand this song. For hundreds of years people tried to find a sea route around the north of Canada, the "Northwest Passage." Almost all failed due to the artic weather and ice. John Frankin was an English explorer who disappeared in the 1840s trying to find the route. The wrecks of his ships have only recently been found. The Beaufort Sea is the part of the Ardtic Ocean nort of Alaska that he was trying to reach. In one verse he sings of overland explorers shuch as MacKenzie and Fraser who explored the Canadian west and northwest. to reach the Pacific and the Arctic Ocean. Even though I am a Yank in Wyoming I really enjoy Stan Rogers' music and amm probably more familiar with Canadian history than most of my fellow countrymen. Maybe I was a Canadian in a previous life. For anyone who enjoys Stan Rogers try listening to Gordon Bok, a New Englan singer who does a lot of similar stuff.

Hi Harri . Stan Rogers produced our band " Éritage " last album in 1982 , on his Fogarty's Cove Music label . Being from Québec , this was to become a major support and promo for your touring schedule in North America . And furthuremore , the putting together of this record prooved to be a fantastic encounter with Stan , the man and a giant star for us . To say the least , I was so trilled with his doings that it still today warms my heart and spirit with uplifting thaughts . I recall Stan chatting with us about his stage experiences . So , after one of his performance of " Northwest Passage " , someone in the audience shouted : " My God , Stan just created a new canadian anthem ! " And that's more than a stone trowned in the big pound ! He was and , I like to think , that he's still a major corner stone of our canadian folk heritage , no enough praised as to this date , but very far from being forgotten and appreciated . I miss him dearly and can only cheerish his memory , life and huge legacy of songs and wrttings . Thanks for your REACTION on this matter . Cheers .

Hari. Boy, this is not a song for which a few words of comments will suffice. I guess first of all, I should say that there are many Canadians, particularly in western Canada, who think Northwest Passage should be the National Anthem of Canada. Why? I suppose the short answers are: 1) it gathers together several important names, and stories in the history of the exploration of most of Canada - pretty well everything west and north of Ontario/Quebec. The Franklin expedition is a famous story, and it was only relatively recently that 3 graves were found on an island in the high arctic that contained 3 of the earliest of Franklin's crews to die. The research since then has been extensive, and we now know much more. It's a truly dreadful story. But - there's always one or two of those - it also captures, as no other song does, the sheer size of this enormous country, and how much of it really is. Later in the song, Stan talks about heading west - which in this case is heading for the barrier of the Rocky Mountains, in Alberta.). Stan mentions David Thompson, "the Great Mapmaker", and Alexander MacKenzie (for whom the enormous MacKenzie river is named, and finishes by mentioning following the path of Fraser, taking "the roaring Fraser to the sea." (I confess that I'm a bit prejudiced because that's where I live. I've spent my whole life exploring the huge ara mapped by Thompson, often following his diaries and maps. There's nowhere else on earth like it) The Thompson Canyon and Thompson River, then the Fraser Canyon and the mighty Fraser river, cut an awe-inspiring path through the very centers of three mountain ranges, with the Fraser River finally coming to the Pacific Ocean at Vancouver in southern B.C. If you don't live out here, you would not know those names, or those places, or the stories of MacKenzie, Thompson and Fraser, and their search for a way through the seemingly impossible barrier of 3 mountain ranges that start on the west side of Alberta and extend through much of British Columbia. We - those not in the small southern part of Ontario, know exactly how enormous, wide and savage this land is. If Canada breeds strong souls, that's part of the reason. I don't know anyone here in western Canada who doesn't know this song, and its meaning. And most can sing it A Capella, as Stan does. What I said about the National Anthem is not a joke; this song represents most of this country, and includes some of its most important history - unless you're one of many who live in the tiny "Laurentian Triangle" that encloses Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. Those people do not know, and do not understand - or care - just how wide and how savage this land is., and at the same time the magnificent work of those early explorers.

FYI The NorthWest Passage has never really been used much to this day. Now of course the ice that caused such problems back then has melted due to global warming. Because of the route through the Arctic Ocean is in the Canadian North where the land masses are contiguous with and belong to Canada the now more accessible route has fallen under much dispute with regard to whether or not international waters laws apply. If you look at a map of Canada you'll see that the most direct route from the Atlantic to the Pacific and vice versa goes right through Canadian Waters.

No Mary You Are Wrong. This song is not about settlers trying to get from the east to the west coast. It is about explorers often funded by Merchant Shipping Companies or even governments to establish a shorter shipping route to the eastern coast of Asia from Europe. In an effort to save from having to sail way south and then back up and across the pacific ocean many expeditions tried navigating the Arctic Ocean only to get caught in the drifting and shifting ice. No one ever established an actual route back then, they all failed. The lucky few that did complete the journey swore to never do it again. The majority of those who attempted it were never seen again hence the line in the song "And a long forgotten lonely cairn of stones". Listen to the lyrics. FYI Stan Rogers is and will always be a great Canadian Singer/Song Writer. His legacy is his music and his unmistakable voice. He may be gone but he is still currently Great. To say this is his most famous song is also wrong. Barrett’s Privateers is the song that got him the most recognition from 1977. The Northwest Passage was quest to find a sea route from Canada to the Orient. Without it, the ships had to go around the south tips of Africa or South America.

Seriously, you should read up on the history exploration of the arctic and Antarctic, including the lost Franklin expedition (referenced with the “find the hand of Franklin reaching towards the Beaufort Sea.) What these men went through and what they achieved is amazing given their primitive resources.

We are not racist, we are historical. The founding Canadian history is a ballad of sorrow. Many died , in service of "The Crown" to establish what we now call 'North America'. May Our Lord Watch over us and keep us" keep U. S.

so surprised and pleased to find a Stan Rogers reaction video! I see I'm 4 months late. Also not surprising to see limited comments, yet many heartfelt and enthusiastic ones. All I will add - as an American - is that my Canadian girlfriend and her family are traditional Canadians, thru and thru. Her dad, when she was a kid, actually took her to Admiral Franklin's grave/monument, told her his story, and got teary...

One of my all time favourite songs, I recorded this with the Shanty group Jenkins Ear in the 1990s. The story is about leaving the Maritimes in search of work out west. Stan contrasts his own journey with those of early explorers, their motivations were similar, economic, seeking better times and fortunes. The key to this is in the final verse. The irony is that the Northwest Passage was hunted for centuries, so as to bring in silk and tea from China, now with container ships we don't need the North West passage and we get all sort of cheap goods from China. The Chinese economy is growing, they are building coal powered electricity stations and consequently polar ice is melting and a viable North West Passage will open up.

There's a lot of mystery about the final days and weeks of the expedition. The ships have been found but I haven't seen any explanation yet.

It is a historical song, those named were actual arctic explorers looking for the proverbial northwest passage, that until recently has always been blocked by arctic ice.

It was / is, a haunting hymn to remind us ( Canadians ) of the effort that was taken to map, landscape, take stock of, to open our minds to, to stand amazed at the foot of God of, for all His creation... That of, what we have truly been gifted and, yet also, been made responsible for, in this great land of amazement ! ... and yes, haunting too, isn't it !

The part saying they are trying to find "The hand of Franklin reaching out to sea" is referring to a previous undertaking by Sir John Franklin who made the attempt before the character singing the song. Franklin and his crew died a brutal death to the arctic elements and the lyric can be interpreted both metaphorically and literally, as his expedition were frozen in time by the arctic perma-freeze and they would have likely found their well-preserved remains.

The northwest Passage was the precursor to the Panama canal. Many died in search of the seasonally open, northern water way to the Pacific ocean. It is an integral part of Canada's history. May they now rest, not in arms of ebony, but in the arms of our Lord

i love that you did this song so much! I'm a history and folklore nerd and it's so awesome getting to enjoy this sort of song alongside someone else. If the story was interesting for you and you enjoy horror, I recommend watching The Terror miniseries. It's pretty darn great as both a historical piece and a thriller. They incorporate so many accurate historical details in the show and it's so immersive and wonderful

Yes. This song is about the Franklin Expedition that left England in 1845 to try to find a northern route over the top of Canada to the Pacific Ocean. It disappeared in September 1846. Over the years many have tried to find the lost ships and the HMS Eribus was located in 2024 and the HMS Terror in 2016.
