One of my favorite little details in this episode is that you can see a growing pile of Physics and Chemistry books next to Stan during the montage of him standing in front of the mirror over the years after taking over the Mystery Shack. Despite his whole family lambasting him as good-for-nothing, and despite it taking him 30 years, he put in the time and effort to actually learn enough scientific knowledge to figure out Ford's portal and get it working again. He may not have as much natural talent/intellect as Ford, but damn if his determination isn't amazing.

I feel so genuinely bad for Stan because his entire life has been defined by two mistakes. How much blame he holds in both of these situations is debatable, but he got kicked out of his home for the first one, and spent thirty years of his life fixing the next one. All of the books we see in the flashback show just how hard he studied despite not being great at any of the stuff he needed for fixing the portal. Learning that someone who we could describe as selfish at the start of the show was actually doing all of this for his brother the entire time put so much in perspective.

The amount of foreshadowing of Ford is insane like really. There's a lot, and is so good: 1x2: Stan's boat is called the "Stan of War" 1x3: Stan acting scared of wax Stan the first time he sees it (because it was someone that looked exactly like him out of nowhere). And how he grives it. As a person. 1x4: Stan knowing Gideon is fake because (first he is not dumb and) Gideon calls him Stanford. 1x9:We actually see Fordwhen Dipper and Mabel visit the past and we saw a young Stanford. 1x14: With the teeths of truth Stan says he commits tax fraud regularly. That's because he does his taxes (or when he does them) under his brother's name 1x16: Stan picking up Ford glasses. 1x19: We actually have two here. The brooken swing in Stan's memory. And in the boxing memory we actually see Ford reading in the back 2x11: We have two, Stan saying "Can it Pointdexter" (how he calls Ford) and during the interrogation we see a report card when we have all A+, except for gym class (D-) I think we can call this Fordshadowing.

I can understand why Ford would be upset about the house change and the coping of his identity, in the sense that he took all of that very seriously and it feels like Stan turned it into a joke. But Stan explains why, he had to earn money somehow and he didn't see any other option. He was desperate and starving. And Ford's anger towards him for saving him is really aggravating considering he literally yelled "Stanley, Stanley, Help Me! Do something!" as he was going into the portal. Stan did what his brother was begging of him before disappearing into the portal and then Ford has the audacity to be angry with him and punch him in the face. He has no reason to think that Stan would have realized there's invisible ink throughout the pages, and the warnings are written with that ink.
@Mae11473
@Mae11473 8 ай бұрын
I think from an outside perspective Ford seems like the asshole, but if you genuinely think about it realistically you can understand his anger. You can’t really blame Stan for him ending up in the portal. Because it was an accident. He didn’t even know what the portal was nor what would happen after pushing him. However, despite how intelligent Ford is he’s still human and humans don’t always think rationally. From our perspective we can view the situation differently and more rationally. Ford was trapped in the portal for 30 years and you have to take that into account. It’s not like it was all fun and games over there. Sure some dimensions weren’t so bad, but then you had plenty that were awful. It’s been a while since I read the journal so I can’t actually recall Fords entries regarding his time in the portal. But my only point is that it was probably traumatic to some extent. And while he’s in the portal wishing he could go back, all he can think about is how Stan is the reason he’s there. It doesn’t matter if it’s an accident or if rationally he shouldn’t be blamed. Because at the end of the day his only thought is “If Stanley hadn’t been there then this wouldn’t have happened”. In some ways this fits Fords character. He’s the intelligent one, but consequently has a harder time when it comes to feelings and understanding them. Just like how Stanley is the other way around. People who are more emotional and better at understanding others feelings would look at the situation and realize it was an accident and Stanley shouldn’t be blamed especially after going through the effort to save him. People who are more of the academic type when put into such a situation are more prone to ignoring such things and only focused on the fact that Stanley is the direct cause of what happened. Sorry I know that was a long rant. I just thought I’d defend Ford a bit. I originally thought the same as you but now I’m starting to understand his perspective more. It probably also doesn’t help that he ruined his chances of getting into a good college the last time they saw each other and to Ford that seemed to be on purpose. Stan’s definitely at fault for that. It was an accident but then Instead of telling Ford immediately he deliberately tried to hide his mistake. So naturally Ford wouldn’t think it was an accident. The bitterness from that whole situation probably also impacted how he looked at the portal situation if that even makes any sense.

@@Mae11473 Honestly, if anyone's to blame, it's not Stan or Ford, but their father, Filbrick. He obviously favored one over the other, completely side-lining Stan and using Ford as his ticket up. He definitely drove a wedge between the brothers as they grew up, eventually severing ties with Stan, and it's implied he did the same with Ford later on, probably after learning they wouldn't be getting any of his grant money. Essentially, they were victims of child abuse, and it nearly destroyed their lives as kids and adults.

The Journal puts things into perspective a bit, and though it isn’t source material directly from the show the show does imply things. We can tell Stanford has aged meaning a great deal of time has passed, not to mention the risk to the universe that opening that portal creates. In the Journal, Stan describes his journeys through the other dimensions and reveals that he was getting close to potentially defeating Bill Cypher when the portal re-opened. You’re right about him seeming to resent Stanley though, I feel like Stanley’s more abrasive personality makes it harder for Stanford to understand how long and how hard Stanley has fought to bring him back and fix his mistakes.

About the brothers disliking each other over what happened - don't forget a massive part of Stan saving Ford - although he may have been the cause, he spent half a lifetime fixing and turning on a machine that his own abnormally genius brother needed help and years to make. And he did it alone, as an average-Joe. And that, coming from a guy who spent that life scamming people without a second thought, showed he truly cared for his brother. Because it's the only person he ever really sacrificed his own time and money for. (Except maybe the kids later on)
@reneehoenicke4765
@reneehoenicke4765 8 ай бұрын
Stan's bond with the kids is so much more clear now. He sees a lot of himself in Mabel and they have a lot in common, which is why he likes hanging out with her more. Dipper is the brother that makes him so upset but also breaks his heart. Stan is reminded of everything bad he has ever one when he looks at Dipper, but he also gets a second chance to protect Ford through Dipper as well. Dipper and Mabel are what Stan wishes he had with his twin, with his life. And on top of all of the parallels with him and Ford, Stan doesn't really have family. His whole famiky blames him, probably even his younger brother to an extent, for their misfortune. He never had contact with ANY of his relatives until Dipper and Mabel's paents sent them there for the summer. In the episode where they lost the Shack to Gideon, there is now so much more PAIN knowing what we do now. He lost the Shack, his home and job, but he also lost the machine underneah it and the chance to get Ford back. And it gets WORSE because he was going to have to send the twins BACK HOME! Stan was going to be truly alone again with no hope, but he was ok with that if it meant the twins were safe and cared for. Stan has truly been put through the gauntlet in life, but he remains a caring and determined person. It's no wonder why he's Soos' role model. I think you'll like Ford, and there is depth to him, but Stan is truly special and I'm excited for you to see more of why that is.

Hearing J.K. Simmons voice Ford was such a shock to my system but also a great decision casting wise. He has a great voice that sounds 'responsible' for lack of a better word and quite serious, which is exactly what Ford projects, but he also has a great range that he flexes in emotional moments. His work as Tenzin was the first time I really heard him in animation and I've loved his voice acting since.

I love how the different spectators to the reunion of the two Stans had different reactions. Dipper is hanging on to every word as he finally gets to learn more about the Author he's spent roughly two months looking for. Soos is enamored as he learns more about his father figure. But Mabel sees the similarities between the Stans and herself & Dipper and worries that history will repeat itself. Not What He Seems & A Tale of Two Stans are the Gravity Falls equivalents to the Day of Black Sun. The status quo has been shattered, and new character dynamics are inevitable. The Endgame is approaching, whether we're ready for it or not.

The baby held by Mrs. Pines in the flashback was a source of a LOT of debate. If that baby was Shermie, their age by the time/year this show is set would make them an EXTREMELY young grandparent to Dipper and Mabel. This is why it was theorized by some fans that the baby was Dipper and Mabel's dad, and Shermie could be Stan and Ford's older sibling (who was never shown in the flashbacks). I suspect we may have some answers in The Book of Bill (I hope). And in defense of the fanfic writers and fan artists of Gravity Falls, there are a lot of fantastic works that came out since Stanford was revealed. :)

21:59 Perspective. He didn't spend the last 30 years thinking about how his brother is working to save him. He spent it knowing his brother is the reason he was in there. And also the fact that he didn't want the portal opened again even if it was to save him.

Real talk, I do think Ford is absolutely justified in at very least asking for his house and his identity back. And while wanting the Mystery Shack thing to be over for good is very alienating a statement for Stan, it's also... like... a very understandable situation for Ford, who likely feels like Stan is making FUN of the weird and abnormal, which Ford takes very, very personally. Like, both are being crust buckets about their own personal stances but they ARE made very understandable. I like how complex this situation is.
@chromaticdreams618
@chromaticdreams618 8 ай бұрын
The other interesting little bit of nuance to this discussion is that Ford never once says overtly "You have to LEAVE this house I am kicking you out," he just says that Stan can continue to take care of the kids until the end of summer and then he wants ownership of his house back and the Mystery Shack over. (I mean... he might INTERNALLY want Stan to leave him alone, but he does not actually bluntly state this if he DOES feel this way.) Then Stan, who has a lot of deep rooted abandonment trauma, hears what he says and translates it in his mind to another disowning. So what does he do about this? He disowns Ford first, so he can have the last word and hurt him back. Ooooughhh I love these brothers they're such dumbasses and so juicy
@Delta_Aves

@@chromaticdreams618 I remember really hating Ford after that scene cause he didn't seem to care about the fact that Stan spent 30 years trying to bring him back when he could've so easily left him in the portal, considering how well Stan had been doing since his disappearance, and, given Ford's reclusive nature and their identical appearances, no one would think he went missing. While I still resent him for it, I do see a bit more where Ford was coming from. Stan did negatively affect his life more than once, from costing him his chance to go to a prestigious school, sending him into the portal, and then turning his home into a tourist trap, even if those were purely unintentional, and Stan never really acknowledged it before. But a lot of Ford's problems are his own fault, and he unjustly takes it out on Stan.

He did not break the machine on purpose, he did not deserve to be disowned at 18, he did not “ruin fords life” ford was actually able to pursue his life’s passion after this, in fact if anyone ruined fords life it was ford himself. And the more we learn about ford the more my opinion is reenforced. The absolute least ford could’ve done is say thank you to Stan for saving him from his own dumb invention after the physical altercation he started that pushed him into it to begin with.

It was on both of them that Ford ended up going through the portal, and Stan used the only skills he had to get by while he spent 30 years of his life trying to rescue his brother. He could open another tourist trap literally anywhere and get by. He was only in Gravity Falls for one reason.

I decided to keep the extras until after this episode for obvious reasons. There's a lot to cover. (don't worry, still spoiler free) 1. When Mcgucket fell into the portal, Alex Hirsch said he saw "the kids of places Bill Cipher likes to hang out." There's a hidden code in the journal that says he saw Bill "removing his exoskeleton in order to feed." Eugh. 2. people theorized Stan had a secret twin YEARS before he actually showed up. All because the licence plate on Stan's car said stnlymbl. 3. The boat in Legend of the gobblewonker has "Stan o' war" painted on the side of it. Just in case you needed some emotional damage. 4. This explains why Stan got so emotional over his wax figure's death. All the way back in the 3RD episode! 5. In the time-traveler's pig, when the twins are traveling through time we see the shack during wintertime, and supposedly Stan peeking out. That was technically Ford's first appearance. 6. In Carpet Diem, Stan is reminiscing over a pair of glasses that we now know to be Ford's. 7. in dreamscaperers, in Stan's boxing match memory, you can see Ford in the background reading a book. See ya soon!

This entire show has a running theme of pride being the main obstacle for the characters. And swallowing their pride is what gets them out of their messes. Stanley and Stanford BOTH have EXTREME levels of pride and I’d argue Ford has more. The guy got Stanley ostracized from his family by not giving up the pride in a machine that was unstable when Stanley himself wasn’t the type to be covert. So there wasn’t a reason to doubt he wanted to fix things. And the two are CLOSE. And Stanley has no real pride in accomplishing FIXING THE MACHINE, which means he’s almost as smart as his brother to decipher all the codes. He just didn’t read invisible ink and got DECKED for it. Ford might be a wee bit of a jerk and that’s compared to menace of society Stanley.

at least they didn’t give birth to… freddy fazbear, because, if you give birth to, freddy fivebears, he comes out and he says “or, or, or or, or, or, or or, or or, and then he kills michael afton, or he tries to do it, along with his friends, bunny the bonnie, chica the kitchen, foxy the… fox pirate rawr, and yellow freddy, who’s yellow, and weird, and, but it’s not their fault! it’s all because william afton one day was like “hi i’m gonna murder people, ra!” so he murdered kids, but he was also a yellow bunny? and he was like “hi, i’m a yellow bunny, imma kill you” because he had a daughter? who had, like, remnant? gone from her? so he was like, “if i kill kids, i put them in the suits, so that it’s not, it’s not freddy fivebear fault, its actually purple guy fault” and that’s why you don’t give birth to him.

You asked why Ford was so mad but he actually said "this was insainely risky restarting the portal didn't you read my warnings?". Ford is clearly refering to the warnings that making the device "fully" operatinal would put the whole world in danger! Many people are understandably quick to critisize Ford since last episode the biggest warning was in invisible ink. For a long time it didn't make sense to me why Ford was expecting Stanely to have seen that but recently I finally put it together! At the end of season 1 Stanely had all 3 of the "real" journals and at the begining of season 2 he was expecting to be ruinited with foward that day as evident by his line "this will be my greatest achievement probably should have worn pants" Stanely thought he should have worn pants because he thought the machine was already finished and was expecting to see his brother that day. HOWEVER, in the season 2 premire Stanley makes a copy of journal 3 and gives the REAL journal 3 back to Dipper; AFTER Stanely no longer has the real one then they all discover the invisible ink and Stanely was clearly supprised by that! Since Stanely still had the 1st two journals he would naturally check the invisible ink in them and that invisible ink in those 2 journals must have been what explained the final steps that Stan needed to get the portal working between the season 2 priemeir and now. So since Stanley had all the instructions to get the portal working Ford knew that he read the normal ink in all 3 journals AND he knew he read the invisible ink in the 1st two journals. But Dipper had the real journal 3 and Stanely only had some copies without the invisible ink so that was the only thing Stanely didn't read. Again last episode the invisible ink in journal 3 said "could tear our univierse apart, I was wrong the whole time, total global destruction!" and so on. Ford came to the conclusion that if Stanely read the invisible ink in the 1st journals he would have read it in the last one as well. To make matters worse when Ford asked "didn't you read my warnings" Stanely didn't say "what warnings" he said "warnings smarnings" which basicly confirmed to Ford that Stanely did read the warnings about the machine destroying the world but activated it anyway. Plus both brothers went through trama but we litterally have know idea what Ford went through all these years! "Do kids still say greetings and what is with the large hairless gofer?"

You might not see this since the comment is quite late from the time you posted the video, but I just wanted to add in a fun fact: When he said "It must be a dimension of weirdness leaking into ours," in other words, it's the Boiling Isles. The Owl House makes constant quips that the Boiling Isles is quite 'weird', to that exact word. Aside from that, if you have time, I recommend listening to the extra commentary from the GF DVD box set (you can also find it online)- trust me: It'll blow your minds! Afterward, go back to 'Yesterday's Lie' from TOH, & listen closely to one of Five's conversations. And if you haven't watched Amphibia yet- Oh boy! (No spoilers!) Amphibia, Gravity Falls, & The Owl House are all HEAVILY implied to be interconnected (there's also little, VERY quickly, passing moments in each show that are extremely hard to spot which has references to each other. Again, no spoilers. But if you do eventually plan to watch Amphibia, there's clips that someone made which reveals those little pieces of evidence.)

Regarding Ford's anger. It was 30 years ago when he was launched into unknown dimension, and as we can see he was doing fine out there wherever he is. I get the desire to save his brother and I would have done the same in a heartbeat if I was Stanley, yet from Ford's perspective it's already been 30 years and he probably thought it would be better if the machine was never launched again.

I heard a theory that it wasn't Stan who destroyed Ford's machine, but rather Blendin. When you really think about it, Stan didn't even touch the machine, he just pounded on the table, and the grate fell out (which if that's all it took, then it wasn't well screwed on there), and the machine was still going when he left it. When Ford showed it, it looked entirely different, meaning something else happened in between. Why Blendin? Not only is he a time traveler, but there's a subtle "Blendin was here" message in the fort Stan and Ford play in at the beginning. Why do it? Probably to bring Ford to Gravity Falls, knowing how integral he'll eventually be to the town.

The point id argue about Stanford being mean was unnecessary and has a part to play in the whole situation. Ford literally called him and told him to fix his mistake, and instead of explaining why he can’t destroy it, he pushed him. He also burned him on accident which shouldn’t be glossed over. Stanley never meant to push him in and he worked constantly to rectify that mistake while also making sure his things weren’t seized and his life wasn’t something he ruined. If Ford didn’t want him involved, he shouldn’t have called his brother

10:08 That baby being Shermie (Dipper and Mabel's grandpa) is something the fans pointed out didn't add up as that scene takes place in 1969 (give or take) and that baby shouldn't be old enough in the present of 2012 (~43 years old) to be a grandparent. Thus it's a popular fan theory that Shermie is actually the Stans' older sibling, and the baby is actually Dipper and Mabel's father who was being babysat by his grandparents while Shermie was away for some reason (given the time period, a lot of people figured Shermie was drafted to serve in Vietnam).

It's super twisted that both Stans were called into the office that day. As far as we know, Stanly had no reason to be sitting in that waiting room in earshot of their conversation. It doesn't make sense. Unless, well....all the adults in this backstory act like complete jerks. Did they really have him sit there just to pound it into him that he was lesser? Like some sort of ultra-fucked up version of his tough love for Dipper in the season 1 finale?

Btw, a prevailing theory (that to my knowledge still hasn't been proved or disproved to this day) is that the baby that Stan and Ford's mom is holding at 10:07 is actually Dipper and Mabel's father and as such Shermie (Dip & Mabel's grandfather and the Stans' brother) is fairly older than the Stans. That baby that their Mom is holding isn't Shermie himself, but is in fact Shermie's son aka Dipper and Mabel's Dad. If that baby was Shermie, he'd be in his 40s in the modern day as Ford and Stan are about 18-20 when Stan is kicked out of his home and are in their 60s in the modern day. So it makes more sense for Shermie to be older than his brothers and be somewhere between 70-80 with two 12 year old grandkids than be in his 40s with two 12 year old grandkids. Great reaction as always guys 👍
