One of my all-time favorite, real time "rasslers". Had the privilege to see him "rassle" a couple of times, and no one was tougher or rougher than he. WHAT a MAN. And a damned decent guy.

Stan Hansen was one hell of a wrestler. In Japan he is THE greatest gaijin (non-Japanese) wrestler of all time and in my opinion, he is among the top 20 greatest wrestlers ever. He is often over-looked because most of his success was outside of WWE.

I really thought Hansen lived the gimmick. But, from this interview, he sounds like the nicest, most humble guy. Would love to shake his hands and thank him for scaring me as a child.

Little discussed fact about this legend. He couldn't see past the length of his arm is why he preferred Japan. He didn't wrestle stiff to be an ass, it was his eye sight. One reason he was never over in the states was his stiff style. Very few future legends wanted to work with him for fear of getting literally beat down. People knock Hogan but he had the courage to wrestle him in Japan. It was a stiff match actually dominated by Hogan. Guys like Stan and Vader are legends around the world.

This is from Wiki: He also wrestled in the World Wide Wrestling Federation in the late 1970s, where he broke Bruno Sammartino's neck; it was from this incident that both Hansen and promoters claimed enormous power for his lariat, although a botched powerslam is what actually caused Sammartino's injury.

Stan was never afraid to do business with anyone. What held Hanson back was his hatred of promoters and he burned bridges that way stateside. It didn't stop him from becoming a god in japan. And he had the perfect gimmick matching his features. His matches with Hogan are some of my favorites, but if you want to see what Wrestling is when someone works and has passion there is no one better than the Cowboy Stan Hansen.

He's referring to the match Hansen and Hogan had in Japan. Its on youtube. Hogan won. Plus, Hogan worked Hansen to death and did kick his ass all over the place. I think Hansen cried during the match.

If Stan Hansen were still wrestling, he'd OWN both John Cena and David Otunga or is it Mr. Hudson, LOL!
@Mlotshaw19 жыл бұрын
LOL the first thing Hansen did was blast Vader with a cowbell and broke his nose b4 he even got in the ring, then he popped his eye out for working stiff which is hypocritical cause Hansen is blind as a bat and stiff as a board actually broke cpl peoples necks in his day, I think Vader was the new big thing and Hansen wanted to keep his spot as top American.

+kingman88 Cheesy gimmicks help some (e.g. Undertaker) but not necessarily the majority. Savage was more of a draw / HW champ / main event caliber wrestler during the WM 2-5 era before he became the Macho King. Martel's legacy is his AWA title reign and success in the WWF tag division; the Model gimmick hurt his career. Dusty's WWF gimmick was a humiliation as opposed to the mulitple NWA title reigns and feuds with the Horseman that made him a legend. The majority of top draws today don't have cheesy gimmicks. It's not a stretch to suggest Hansen could have main evented a few Wrestlemanias and/or Starcardes if he stayed in the US and played ball, but he also could have been buried because of his stiff style. However, when you consider his body of work from AJPW and 4 Triple Crown championships between 1990-95 (fighting against arguably the greatest wrestlers to ever live: Misawa, Kawada, Kobashi), there's really no question he made the right decision.

I LOVE the Japan style of wrestling. So much better than the American style. You watch the matches and there's really no faces or heels. Everyone is a tweener. That's the way it should be.
@Ming19Ming12 жыл бұрын
He was smart to stay in Japan as opposed to sign with the WWF. Vince would have made him into some horrible character like he did with the One Man Gang, Terry Taylor, and many others. The money in Japan was great and the wrestlers were well taken care of. They were driven everywhere, hotels paid for, etc ... Japan was the place to be back in the day.
