How To Set & Maintain A Safe Following Distance When Driving - The 3 Second Rule Saves Lives
It's important to set and maintain a safe following distance when you're driving on the highway. Following too close to other vehicles can result in accidents and injuries. If a dangerous driving situation occurs that requires you to have to suddenly slam on the brakes or make an evasive maneuver, you need enough distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you to allow you to react and get out of the situation. In this video, I show you how to apply the 3 Second Rule to set and maintain a safe following distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. It's an easy thing to learn to do, and when applied to your everyday driving, it can increase your safety on the road and maybe even prevent an accident or save a life.

I have been tailgated, and I always feel frustrated and pressured, and I have always felt like I had to tap my brakes to tell them to back off. I have also seen other drivers tailgate each other

I don't like tailgating. It's very unsafe to drive that close to another vehicle. I especially don't get it when I see it being done at 70 mph on the interstate. No margin of error at that speed when you're on someone's bumper.

Thanks so much for this! Great to see this video, just passed it along to a relative as an excellent how-to. I have been using this same technique since learning it in an employer-sponsored defensive driving course way back in the late 1970s, it has 100% kept me from running into the back of anything ever since (except a deer, and they can't count to three). Even more relevant today with the level of distracted drivers out there!

Keep 4 seconds between both cars. Or 2 between the big lights on the highway

Great video. We were also taught never driver overdrive your headlights also. It drives me nuts when I ride with my Daddy in the Ozark hills. No shoulder, pitch black, seemingly the middle of nowhere, and he’s “speed racer” 🫣😩😬Even though he may be under the speed limit, it’s a “roller coaster”

I know what you mean! I grew up in Missouri, and spent a lot of time in the Ozarks. They’ve got some hilly and twisty roads down there.

I was also taught that you need to add atleast 1 second for each additional risk that is recognized.

I have a question. If you have a push start and the car tell you no key detected. In you change the key fob battery. What do I do.
@HowSkills
@HowSkills 3 жыл бұрын
If you already changed the battery inside the remote then it could be some other things. The remote itself might be broken or it may not be programmed to your car any longer for some reason and can't communicate with it. The car battery could be low. Or the keyless entry system isn't functioning like it should and needs to be serviced. Hope you can find the right solution tp fix this!

An insurance company accused me of overreacting for braking when the car in front of me suddenly stopped because their driver who hit me from behind claimed it was about 3-4 seconds away. They refused to cover my full damages because of this. Are they just stupid?

What happened to 5 car lengths
@HowSkills
@HowSkills 3 жыл бұрын
Five car lengths would be roughly 80-85 feet (assuming a vehicle that's between 16-17 ft long), and that would only be enough distance to stop yourself in time if you were going about 17-18 miles an hour. At 70 mph, you need a lot more reaction time and distance to get stopped quick enough to avoid an accident.

The majority of drivers today are so reckless. Almost no one on the roads seem to follow these rules. I've lived in New York (Long Island) and now in Miami. Its been bumper to bumper with tons of tailgaters. Thanks for the educational video!

I agree…It seems like I see a lot of reckless drivers everyday. I don’t understand tailgating. Like that extra few feet of space you gain is really going to get you where you’re going any sooner, not to mention the danger it puts you and other drivers in. Just do your best to be one of the good drivers out there, despite what others are doing. Take care!

Tysm for this. I am now watching this because I realized I was too close to a car and I was getting mad they were going so SLOWWW and then all of a sudden they did a turn to the right, I was so close to them. If I didn’t slow down fast enough I could’ve rear ended them 🥲
