Years ago when my youngest son was 8 we went to london to visit for a week. I asked a guard could i take a photo of my son with him. He noded i put my son a distance from the guard but they would both be in the picture. The guard moved next to my son. I was surprised but thrilled. I took the picture and thanked the guard. My son was smiling he thanked the guard as well. If you treat them with respect they are lovely

The guard behaves in a racist, possibly Islamophobic manner. When at least three blondish, European-looking women move in very close to him, he doesn't bat an eye, but when two very dark-haired young women who could possibly be of non- European descent approach him, he rudely tells them to back off when they are a foot away! Clearly this is a case of discrimination. Some of the guards are dignified in their manners and deportment, and their horses seem to welcome the public's attention, which the kind guards do not discourage. A relative few of the tourists are obnoxious. I think many of the commenters on the guard channels do a disservice both to the decent guards and to the tourists by rather indiscriminately endorsing the unwarranted rudeness and arrogance of some guards and harshly criticising clearly innocent tourists. The royal guards have their jobs primarily for the tourist dollar. They are unquestionably trained military personnel, and they could certainly be lethal with their good command of large well-trained mounts and big swords. However, they would avail nothing in defense against modern over-the-counter weapons, and even a well-aimed surprise machete attack to first topple the horse would take them out, and certainly a grenade would. That is why the area is simultaneously patrolled by heavily-armed modern military guards to protect the mounted guard as well as the royal residences and personnel. Clearly, the mounted guard is there for ceremonial reasons, 1) to appeal to domestic and international tourists whose funding is a critical part of England's economy, 2) to use pageantry to keep alive sanitized popular notions of the breadth and depth of the historical impact of the British Empire on the peoples of the world (covering up the killing of 165 million Indians, hundreds of thousands of Kenyans and other indigenous peoples, causing the butchery of Palestinians through support for racist Zionists, violently exploiting the lands and labor of Ireland and Scotland to the point of forcing many of our ancestors out of our homelands into the diaspora, etc.) While a tiny percentage of the tourists can be discourteous, the steady criticism of them as a whole as rude and stupid is very unfair and often hypocritical and zenophobic. The signs posted that warn that horses can bite and kick and that forbid tourists to touch the reins are only in English, and most of the tourists do not come from the elite economic classes that give members access to horses, so they don't understand signs of agitation. The tourists are often in awe at being near such gorgeous creatures, maybe for the only time in their lives, and every species of animal instinctively seeks to touch what it loves. It is sickening to see the contempt shown by some guards and many commenters for the unwitting tourists who clearly mean no harm and whose interest actually honors the myth of England, especially considering that the British tourism industry invites them to enjoy themselves. Shame!

There was someone coming through or something going on, they usually aren't out in front of the arches like that, they're usually behind a chain. It's crazy to see any time these guys come out of their positions, how ridiculously crowded in they are by people with tourist groups, it's almost scary... I'm sure not for these guys, they're military, but I'd be a little intimidated by 8-10 some odd people flocking around me to take a pic and I can't move forward unless I YELL... It's like watching a parade of stupid sometimes 😂 watching these ignorant tourists. On the other hand, I am pretty sure you're not supposed to talk to them. Why everyone felt the need to get so close to the guard that they were invading his personal space is absolutely mindblowing. The lady in the white t-shirt was rubbing against him she was so close; and the one in the black tank top was actually leaning into him! And standing in one spot, in full gear, not moving or shifting his weight from side to side is hard enough without tourists leaning into or bumping him.
