At 1:41 he briefly forgets the lyrics. Being the genius he is, he recovers and crushes it. 😂 What a talent.

What spoke the loudest was the ethnic makeup of the band. That's racial harmony that we needed in the 70s and what we need even more of these days.

I think a lot off ppl who came after Sly wouldn’t be the artists they were/are without him 💜
@Odawg96

@@LS-tt9ci Well he’s generally regarded as one of the architects of funk (along with James Brown and Jimi Hendrix). Without him, music history would look and sound very different…not just artists who came after him but many of those came before. The Temptations went psychedelic and started passing the mic on songs-like the Family Stone-where virtually every member had lines in a song. Think of“ I Can’t Get Next You”, “Ball of Confusion”, and “Cloud Nine.” The Isley Brothers also borrowed from Sly. The Parliaments-who became Funkadelic-did the same thing, and changed the way they dressed because of Sly. Same with the Ohio Untouchables who evolved into the Ohio PLAYERS. Like the Temptations, anyone who worked with Norman Whitfield during after the late 60s, was borrowing from Sly (Undisputed Truth and later groups like Rose Royce and Starguard). Younger groups like the Bar-Kays and Earth, Wind & Fire borrowed heavily from Sly’s vibe. Even the Jackson 5 borrowed from Sly. My mom and dad always told me that all the aforementioned acts (and most funk acts) got “it” from Sly. For the longest time, I had no idea what “it” was, but in college, I saw clips of the Family Stone on the Ed Sullivan show. I could SEE “it.” NO ONE looked like Sly and the Family Stone, and then EVERYONE wanted to look like them. I could HEAR “it.” Again, no one sounded like them, and then EVERYONE wanted to sound like them. Sly made all the R&B and soul acts ditch their suits and stop looking like drill teams. Everyone became COLORFUL. Folks statrted breaking out colored Afro wigs and so forth…again, P-Funk and the Bar-Kay’s come to mind. Sly’s influence canNOT be overestimated!

@@Odawg96 I was a very little kid in the early 70’s, but my parents had fantastic taste in music. Everyone you mentioned was played in our house. My mom had a special spot for Sly, tho. I remember standing on the drive train ‘hump’ in the back seat of my mom’s Galaxy 500 with my arms thrown over the front bench seat to hold on (no car seats in those days 😆) scream-singing along to Sly & The Family Stone with my Mom while she drove. His significance was not lost on my parents, they’d get me up from bed if he was on tv after my bed time 😊 Also Tina Turner (Ike too until she left him) and a host of others. My dad would sit next to me and tell me, “This is what it means to be really damn great at your job”; Sly as bandleader, multi instrumentalist, musician, composer, arranger, change agent, entertainer, fashionista, visionary. Impossible to overstate his contribution and artistry

Who was cooler, him or his sister? He understood what funk was before it existed, he had way to much fun being hip. When a groove, a voice and something to say was all you needed.

What an energetic and powerful performance this late in the game, when his output was supposedly waning. I think this was a bright period for him. Just married, new baby, and a quick burst of positive energy. it was during this time period that he recorded the High On You album, which matches this throwback of positive and joyful energy. It seemed to have faded soon after as his marriage ended and the band disintegrated after the Radio City Music hall concerts exactly 50 years ago in January 1975.
