I appreciate this conversation. I was considering trying to get into standup comedy. What I've noticed is that people underestimate women and at the same time want to be "seen" by them. Also, I think the reason women have to earn the trust and respect more is because women are taught to be kind (even if someone is overstepping boundary), understanding (even when someone patronizes us), welcoming (even if soemone makes us uncomfortable). So, when we come out and enforce boundaries or try to use self depricating humor is because it breaks a preconcieved notion of how we should act. It doesn't occur to people that we work so hard and have to fight agaiant the current the whole way.

This podcast is really interesting and Carly's perspective on navigating the shark infested waters of comedy as female comedy is so insightful. Also navigating the stripper profession is so fascinating. Instant fan. A great female story of what is really going on. Great pod.

This is very interesting. I enjoy open mic comedy and have seen more female comedians "bomb". The newbie male acts might have been just as in need of improvement, but the audiences seem to be less tolerant of a meh female comedian. It's a curious gender-based dynamic. I once heard an emcee comment about a female comedian who sang as part of her set, "You sing too well to be a comedian. Really. You just need to be able to carry a tune.". I found the comment curious, but didn't even think about the gender aspect until now. Would the emcee have made the same comment to a male comedian? In most fields, it does seem as though women are caught in a bind. In general, women often have to work harder to prove themselves, to show that their job is a priority, etc. At the same time, women often experience micro aggression about not being too excellent and thus calling attention to themselves. Add in more straightforward sexual/gender harassment, and the workplace is shown to be a minefield. In job interviews, interviews for jobs that require an MA or higher, I have been asked whether or not I have reliable childcare. My husband, the father of the aforementioned children, has never been asked about childcare during a job interview. Why is this still happening?

You can actually tell them that isn't a question relevant to your job position. As well as the married question, aside from taxes that doesn't really matter for overall job performance
