How about, dubbing? Could you use comical euphemisms or clichés, instead of taking sound out? Maybe a better idea is just to have like 5-6 phrases or words, and just copy-paste it, based on needed length of overlap (have the same recording in short, medium and long timestamps; so 5-6 times 3). So in case we miss the meaning due to mute, at least we will understand contextually what is being said. I know it's messing with creative licenses, but I'm sure comedians would rather have a replacement phrase, than a no-sound mute on the most affective phrasing.
