I've always enjoyed musicals, but as a Sheffielder to see a show about your home city and to see it do so well is amazing. It has some brilliant songs, the storyline is very much that of the city in the late 20th century, and whilst it may not be perfection, it is still stunning. It's the talents of Richard Hawley, Chris Bush, and the many actors, production team and others involved in putting it together that makes it work, and I am so proud and genuinely emotional that this comes out of my city.

I’ve seen this show twice in Sheffield and it’s brilliant! Richard Hawley is a fantastic song writer and the songs fit in perfectly with the play’s narrative.

The songs in SATSE are Richard Hawley compositions, not originally written specifically for theatre. Richard Hawley, whilst from Sheffield and using the city for lyrical inspiration, writes music that is often heavily tinged with Americana, and originally recorded this song (which has a Southern blues feel) with an affected American twang, because it suits the genre. The show has done likewise because the songs are used as broad tonal mood pieces rather than as strict narrative.

Find the cast recording version of the song on this site and listen to that, the powerfulness of this is lost in the RAH, sounds much better in the smaller surroundings of the theatres the show has been to. The odd choreography works when you see the entire show..
