Introversion is looked down upon in our society. I have always been told by my peers, teachers, and parents to be more social and outgoing since society equates extroversion with success. People in society do not see the benefits of being an introvert. Research shows that introverts are creative and curious critical thinkers. Despite this, extroverts are still favored. It’s time to realize the value in being an introvert.

Society treats introverts as a weakness but introverts are actually more observant and smarter.

I also think introversion can be a strength because it allows you to go against the crowd. Introverts don't care if they are part of the cool kid club. Society needs that sometimes.

@@candle1955 That is not true in my experience at least. I have worked in HR and sadly they would rather hire extroverts and promote them as they feel they are better leaders because they speak up more. It's sad that we live in a society that celebrates extroversion and looks down on introverts. I've seen introverts who were more qualified, but were passed off and a less qualified extrovert got the position.

I always get the same question too: "Oh, Michelle, your sister is so funny and easy to talk to, why are you so quiet?" It's like they're saying (in a euphemistic sentence construction): Michelle, your sister is fun - and you are boring. I really wish that our society treated Introverts with just as much respect as they do towards Extroverts.

Calling an introvert "quiet" is pretty much the worst thing you can do in a conversation. It always feels like they meant to say "youre not trying hard enough" even though you were pretty much sitting there all the time trying to find a way to participate in that conversation. Its pretty sad that those people dont even seem to understand they said something that could upset the person they were talking to, its completely normal to state things like that.

It's a nightmare world for introverts. It's a service based economy. Your only role in life is to help somebody sell a product by being dynamic, energetic and friendly. As an introvert we don't know how to communicate like extroverts because obviously we aren't them and value different things. Most extroverts i know mainly gossip about other people because they know lots of people and have trash on all of them. Or they tell you about the most mundane details of their lives like, "Mmm I was gonna make spaghetti last night but then I didn't have any marinara so I had to go to the grocery store. I think I will make lasagna tomorrow but thats only if I have enough cheese." Meanwhile like George Carlin I'm thinking, "blow it out your ass!" As introverts we like deep conversations about politics , religion, a hobby we are passionate about, art, or music. Extroverts just talk to talk and we are always told we should be just like them.

***** The first time I saw Carlins "people are boring" sketch...well first I laughed my ass off and second I really had a feeling of being accepted as bizarre as that may sound. I thought finally someone else gets it too. Whenever somebody asks well don't you want to come hang out after work? I always find myself thinking...um no...why would I want to do that? We have nothing to say to one another that hasn't already been said and honestly its boring. I always find myself just wishing I was at home watching KZbin documentaries. But its beaten into us that socializing should be the highest calling of any human. I don't get it.

Michelle Wanha I'm just trying to bring balance back to the force. We introverts put up with a lot of crap and are generally looked at as just being failed extroverts. I'm here to say " We don't want to be like you. We think its dumb and boring the way you live." There are literally numerous derogatory names for characteristics that introverts have such as dork, dweeb, nerd, loner, weird, anti-social, creepy, and potential serial killer. I'm struggling to come up with any bad labels for extroverts. I'd like to propose they be called "Woos." Whenever I see some extrovert being interviewed in a crowd they have to scream something like, "I'm Kelly from Long Beach and we are soooo excited to be here. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!." But at least shouting a noise that a wounded cow might make always lets people know that you are fun, exciting, and totally max to the extreme!!! WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

This video was so spot on. As an introvert all my life because I didn't talk 24/7, stayed to myself and am slightly awkward ( along with some anxiety I just suceeded in defeating) people have always viewed me as stuck up or treat me as though I'm retarded. Its really annoying and society really needs to learn to respect introverted individuals.

i'm an introvert and the worst part is i'm from africa. growing up i've been pushed by my parents,teachers,society to be more outgoing and to learn to talk to people and this is probably the hardest thing i've ever tried to do. i didn't like raising my hands in class or even taking part and it didnt fit well with the current system i was in because teachers would beat you up if you didn't raise your hand or if you got it wrong (by beating you up i dont mean spank you two strokes with a belt, hitting you with a fucking pipe). i was never shy but i became shy/depressed/afraid because i didnt understand the world i was in. everytime i'd go home (it was a boarding school) i'd watch disney shows and i would see all this kids enjoying life and giving out their own ideas but my own personal life was a constant nightmare.i hated myself.i started fully understanding myself and what introversion is about an year ago,(thank God for the internet) and 'im hoping that i can work out all my past trauma and finally get to enjoy life as an introvert(i'm 19yrs old).

I once trained to be a chat-based service provider & during the 4-week training phase, our mentor made us discuss in groups everyday. It was not only hell for me but it made me quit even after the training was fully accomplished. I actually did well and passed every test with A's. However, I felt so emotionally & mentally tired that I needed weeks (even months) to recharge. Here, praying that our future generation of introverts wouldn't have to go through all that suffering just to get a job that they are/can be good at (not to mention that I was training to provide services via 'chats' / messaging only). Sometimes, group works are great to share ideas & thoughts but also give enough time for freedom of individual thoughts to ponder on information received on our own. A lot of us work better in silence. 💗💗💗

I've been misunderstood by nearly everyone in my life because I'm an introvert. They never seemed to think it's introversion, but rather that I have some type of emotional or mental or social "problem". I'm quiet and keep to myself, they think i'm a snob and don't like them. "It's always the quiet ones" like I'm repressing myself and one day I will explode on people. Seeing the negative conclusions people draw on me has only re enforced my introversion .

I have been "quiet" all my life, since my childhood and adolescent days & years. Growing up in a LOUD, extroverted family of socializing Hispanics, particularly with a Type-A, socially-dominating mother and older brother, my introversion has felt shunned by those who know me best. This talk helped point out MANY things that make me feel grateful about being an Introvert; and to those schools that constantly rely on the extroversion ways of "operating" I say with humble honesty: please stop trying to make everyone extroverted. It doesn't work that way for us Introverts; your ways are not always best.

It's true that being an introvert has its own positive sides but that won't help you for so long. Introvert also needs to learn to socialize 'cause you cannot showcase yourself if you don't learn to work with great people sometimes. You have to open up sometimes whether you like it or not. Keep things to yourself is not always gonna benefit you, you need to learn how to ask questions instead of being a listener. It's not that we label ourselves as introverts and be like it all the time. Don't be in a comfort zone, make a change that can benefit you, not all changes are bad. Just my opinions, I don't mean to offend anyone.
@stephaniefuller262
@stephaniefuller262 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Sov Storybrook, I agree that change is good, but it seems a lot of the time many people do not like the change that they need to do. I know it was hard and still is hard for me to step out of my 'comfort zone', but at times I challenge myself at doing so because I realize other people actually do want to hear and see what I know. I don't know if this to be true to others, but it is for me. At first though I do agree that others try to push introverts too hard at time. I can relate to that a lot. But over time I developed aspects from both extrovert and introvert personalities, which as you said I needed the willingness to change in order to do so. A lot of times introverts can become stuck if they don't change or challenge theirself and I know I didn't want to be stuck. If that makes sense.

Yes Samantha. I've too had to push myself and when doing this it helps me to grow even thought at times it is hard. The past few years I realized if we become to introverted or closed off that we can become stuck and not able to go anywhere so we need to be able to take opportunities to go forwards. I used to be called shy all of the time growing up, but people do not realize that can hinder a person in their journey because they can actually feel that way even if they are not really that at all. They like to label people when they do not fully understand how and who a person is. If that makes sense. I know people who truly know me actually understand me and finally are able to push me in ways that I can not fully explain and in ways that I did not know I could push myself. Continue to push yourself even when it seems like it is hard at times and find those people who actually understand you and have them challenge from time to time. Sometimes a little push from someone can help in ways you may not understand.

You don't understand. When you're introvert it doesn't mean you necessarily seak out empty rooms and avoid other people and their attention. In doesn't mean that you don't want to be leader or be part of some community or whatever. A lot of times it means, that you don't know how to approach people and how to talk to them or how to sell your speech. I'm introvert with social anxiety. A killer combination. I want to talk to people, I want to have friends, I want be invited to events (even though I know I wouldn't want to go), I want people consider my ideas and opinions. But there is that problem, I don't know how to do it. When I talk to people, they sometimes leaves the conversation with feeling that I don't want to talk to them, while in reality I'm in my head trying to think about any way to keep the conversation going. But I can't find one. So people don't talk to me and that leads to having just few if any friends, so I have noone to invite me to events. And that "ideas and opinions" thing? It's not like I don't want people to know them, I don't know how to share them. Because my way of communication is very trippy and akward, so anytime I try to express myself, it ends up with people either laughing at my poor expressing skills or thinking I'm weird and thanks to that, they won't even stop for a minute to think about what I said. When I say I want attention, it doesn't mean I want someone directly focusing on me, but I want to be included and thought of. Like, I want that girl I sit with every other day to invite to her party, since she invites even people, who she doesn't know at all. Or I want people to understand and think of me, when they want from a class something and not pressure me into unnecessary stuff, which is maybe okay with extroverts but not with introverts. And most importantly, I want people to think about what I do and say instead of how I do it. So I don't want society to focus on me, but I want it to include me.

In a world of extroverts? Stats show introverts outnumber extroverts. It's just extraversion as a trait itself stands out more and people more likely to remember them.

Can you tell me where your getting those numbers? I had always heard that 25% of the population was introverted. If we are really the majority then why did we design a world built around annoying team building activities, meetings, and small talk for the purpose of networking.

Please explain. I am an extreme introvert and even went into an extroverted field where I am required to talk all the time. After years of doing that I still suck at being an extrovert and making any kind of small talk. I still have a preference for being alone, reading, and watching TV over socializing. Carl Jung who invented these concepts of introvert and extrovert felt that they were unlikely to change in a person's life and that it was actually cruel to try to force an introvert to be an extrovert.
