In Canada it's been like that for years. My ex husband was charged with attempted murder on me in 1994 in which he stabbed me 17 times with my 10 yr old daughter lying next to me. The crown attorney which is supposed to be looking out for our best interest was asking for 4 1/2 yrs while my ex's lawyer was asking for 4 yrs in jail for him. I wrote an impact statement telling the judge that I didn't feel that the Crown attorney was working in our best interest interest. When the judge saw what they were doing he was so made that he told everyone that if he could give him 40 yrs like the State's he would. Unfortunately the judge could only give him the maximum in Canada and it was 6yrs for attempted murder and the judge told me I would have to fight to have the laws changed which I have been doing for been doing for 30 yrs with no avail
