Working on seeing if my Golden Retriever Rottweiler Mix (50/50) (4months old - Mötley) can take on hunting. I have introduced him to fetching pigeons at 3 months old, which he loves and is awesome at! He has been doing well but just recently started doing this. This video could not have came at a better time!

Simplify by only throwing the same distance as the length of check cord and keep the pup under control so you can always backup a command or "supervise" play time,

This is a great video and wish I had seen it when mine was a puppy. I'm embarrassed to say, I'm a little late to the game. I am trying to get my 4 year old to retrieve consistently. He would originally retrieve. Then it moved to retrieving as long as I had second object in my hand that he wanted. Now he will retrieve, but then stay in the 10' foot zone and want to play keep away. Will the same "back to the basics" training work for him or does his age require a different approach? Thanks for your help!

Our lab mix does the same thing with almost every toy but there is one she will actually bring back and not just sit to chew on, maybe try looking for something that your dog responds to? I’m not an expert though so I know sometimes people on KZbin aren’t useful.

I don’t know much about anything so there’s that. But I would just keep taking steps back until the pup is able to be successful. Take it all the way back to a small hallway with no distractions. Experiment with different bumbers or materials. For some reason it didn’t click with my mountain cur pit mix until we used an old rag. Once we played with that for a while he seemed to really start holding on. I would recommend checking out Michael Ellis’s videos on the fundamentals of tug and increasing tug drive. Basically I got our guy to stop chewing on it by playing lots of tug and playing with a flirt pole.

Is there a reason you don't exchange a treat for the bumper? Getting my puppy next month!!. I love the content. Every video is very informative. I will be a patreon member once she arrives cause I'll have so many questions!!
@StandingStoneKennels
@StandingStoneKennels 2 ай бұрын
Though trading treats for bumpers can be an effective way to build recall durning this game, it also often turns in to the dog dropping the bumper in anticipation of the treat. This will grow to the point that bumper could be getting dropped 5-10 feet away which isn’t a good retrieve anymore. Hope we can help with your new pup!

Thank you for the video! I have been having a similar problem with my 5 mo. old lab running around. Great to see a video of where things don’t go right and see how you handle it. Any suggestions for when the puppy drops the dummy on the way back and comes to me but doesn’t bring the dummy back the whole way?
@dylanstearsman7601
@dylanstearsman7601 2 жыл бұрын
What I’ve learned, which might not be the best way, but when you play tug of war with them they learn to want the dummy, and eventually they will realize when you say drop it they will drop it, but playing tug of war makes them want to keep it in their mouths

My GSP just made 5 months old and she is doing something similar. She will chase down the bumper sometimes pick it up and sometimes not but when she does she is off to the races. She wants to run or it constantly exploring with that nose. She is stubborn and strong willled. What else should I be doing?

Any advice for water retrieval? I have a pretty good hand on my dog when we are practicing on dry land he will bring me the bumper and deliver it to my hand almost every time (we're still working on it) but when we practice in the water he will just lay down in the water until he's ready to bring it back.

How do you get a dog to want to go after the bumper? I have a dog that is willing to pick one up by himself and chew on it or if I throw it a few times and of course he won't bring it back and I try and play with him to get more drive he just becomes less interested. We have a close bond but he's not much of a toy dog. I want to train him retrieval to help him with his service work and to also train him to find sheds. Any help?

My GSP just turned one and retrieves bumpers and things like that perfectly. We got in the field, he pointed a rooster, I flushed and shot him, and my dog sprinted to it and just pointed it again. I couldn’t get him to stop pointing it and bring it back to me. Thoughts on how to get him to retrieve dead birds after he pointed them initially?

Our 6 month GSP has no interest in this … I’ve tried all types of toys to even frozen birds. He will get excited while it’s in my hands … I’ll toss it and then he goes to it and then takes off on another scent. It almost seems like his nose is distracting him. We don’t throw it far, only within the limits of the check cord (40ft). Def not giving up he’s too young, But it’s becoming frustrating.
