We have a saying in the goat world “If the results are good it’s line breeding. If the results are bad it’s inbreeding.” Of course, in our case, bad results become tacos 🌮 so experimenting with line breed isn’t uncommon at all to see. I think line breeding can be super beneficial as long as the breeders have a keen eye for faults. You guys are obviously experienced enough to recognize if the conformational and/or behavioral traits that are resulting from the smaller gene pool are positives or negatives.

I agree as a pedigree chicken Breeder. We do use a bit of inbreeding and it brings out the good and the bad. But having the bad genes expressed is a good thing so we can remove those birds from the breeding pen. We basically make dinner from any chicken that shows weakness or a fault. The problem with dogs is that people don’t cull the weak puppies. They sell them and someone else is stuck with an unhealthy dog.

I prefer my dogs to be closer to the lower height standard as I prefer speed. The larger the GSP are not as fast IMO quartering on Grouse on Heather as an example having watched my own and others Trialing or out shooting. I believe in higher speed as long as it match's their nose is more important when I breed or try to achieve in training and the shorter GSP supply me this over the past 49 years. I dont prefer close breeding but its everyone opinion and is only that. You can argue either as best but too close can highlight medical issues when you see over popular sires are used who are discovered with problems later with pups bred.

There are plentiful enough QUALITY Pointer Bloodlines out there for one to select specific desirable traits without having to resort to inbreeding. While the first 1-2 generational pools will generally be ok, the gene sequence will develop permanent flaws that will carry over to every successive generation. It's best to pick dogs from different bloodlines altogether, and because TRAINING and time put into developing behaviors and alertness is what deems a dog to be good (you have many incredibly well trained gems), there's no need to inbreed.

Line-breeding and Inbreeding aren’t the same (just saying)… Great interjection though for sure. In any “working” line of dog line-breeding as well as inbreeding should be evaluated completely different. For the simple fact, that these genres of dogs vary intensely.

No, not at all. That is such a long distance, gene wise, that it might as well be an outcross. I personally line breed quite often, with my preferred combination being - the sires sire is also the dams grandsire. This sets the particular type/genetic qualities I am looking for, and is close enough to show up any genetic issues that we don't yet have tests for. If a genetic issue pops up, it's easier to trace to the source and eliminate those dogs from the program. But this is all based on seriously knowing the genetics behind each dog and assessing each individual in your breeding program. It can work very well if you do it right. On the other hand it can be a complete disaster. It depends on many factors that can't be covered in a comment.

Yes! Get a dog that isn't so inbred. They share the same great, great, great grandparents. Think about that really hard.

In breeding and line breeding are different line breeding always goes down stream father daughter granddaughter great granddaughter. Inbreeding is brother sister mother son. Line breeding healthy animals is ok inbreeding is not. Almost every cow in America I think it’s over 80% are all from two different bulls when the cows were originally brought to America it was cheaper to bring over many many females and then only a few males and from those few males after a few hundred years of selective breeding we still have perfectly healthy cattle

DO NOT INBRED your dogs. You are doing more harm than good. That's what major problem with purebred there too much of the same genes. That's why they have health problems DO NOT buy a dog from people that do that. Inbreeding is a problem. Having someone say it isn't. Don't understand.
