Question for you, if you don't mind answering. I bought your ez lead leash and the dog is constantly pulling on the lead and taking it off. This dog is 18 months old and still is doing this. We've had her walking on the ez lead for 1 year and if you put a little bit of pressure on the lead, she will immediately take it off with her front legs. If you could give me any suggestions in what to do or shoot me a private message, I would appreciate it. Thank you

I needed to see this. I’m working a dog that is like this as well. Do you CC before you start this? We are in hold conditioning right now. I plan to stop hold to start CC. Should I wait or continue to CC for a freezer?

Share something I learned about setters. First their intelligence is markedly higher if they live in the house because they're simply exposed to more than a kennel dog. Don't know if this was the case for Covey. Intelligent setters love to learn but with this comes an issue. I found they do not understand the point of repetition. I had one that was doing blind retrieves at under 5 months old. The first retrieve she'd come running to me, plop herself down on my right side and turn her head up for me to receive the dummy. With each repetition the return was slower and any reps after the third she would be sitting at my side shaking. In other words she thought she was doing it wrong. My praise was no longer having any effect. Had a male English setter that loved to learn. The praise is very important in the teaching phase. With the male he lost enthusiasm after the second rep. It was like OK see I got that, let's move on. Simply worked with that and would run through a battery of drills and add something new at the end. By doing this he was always very attentive to the new lesson. Something else about setters which you may be finding with Covey. They can be very stubborn. You'll know this when something she has demonstrated she understands one day just decides she doesn't want to do today. This is the time to get across that there are no options. Have enjoyed following Covey's development.

Great description of her demeanor and she plays the role perfectly. I strongly believe in positive dog training but did find that in retriever training after they learned what hold, release (give), and fetch meant, the toe hitch method was an effective and quick method to force break a dog to retrieve anything on command within three to four weeks; with dogs that weren't as enthusiastic. I also found that most of the dogs with that demeanor didn't have consistent training much less reinforcement or disciplined training. They were the alpha dog in their home and everything was playtime all the time. When they go to a trainer they realize they are no longer in the environment they loved and controlled, their routine has changed and they are being expected to work, and like little children, they mope. And the older the dog, the longer it's going to take to get them to understand they can still do what they love and what they were bred to do and they will do it with consistency and discipline and it enjoy it more than they did before. Covey is going to be great it's just going to take her a little longer.

My dog likes to play but not with toys, bumpers, etc. at all. His obedience and basic commands are great but I can’t figure out how to train him to fetch if he doesn’t pick anything up with his mouth besides food. Do I tape treats on the bumper? Lol

Is there a negative to more physical/verbal excitement and praise throughout the process?
@TheDarkBristol
@TheDarkBristol Ай бұрын
Often dogs that are trained using punishment and intimidation stop even responding to "excitement" from the trainer, and certainly not praise. If you want a fun and reciprocal relationship with your dog focus on the excitement and praise you can see are missing here and...basically forget everything else in this video haha

I'm really impressed you could keep her in the game and not have her turn off, that amazes me there's an equilibrium where you can get that time in. It's not a long time but it's impressive. My French Brittany has a pretty similar personality, he's a little more willing but anti-pressure where Covey is just prone to being resentful. Good to see her.

english setter. Absolutely beautiful, but absolutely stubborn. No two ways around it. No matter what anyone says. Only reason they are worth it, is if you like that or want a dog with drive beyond any means. take an Shorthair or lab out to sd on huge fields, they will be done after couple really hard days. You can take a english setter off the couch monday, to south dakota, it wont ever quit. Run itself to death before it slows down.

I tried force fetching my setter and she is exactly like covey. As soon as I would put pressure on her she would whine and cry. So I didn't finish the training. She loves hunting and finding the birds, but as soon as the bird is shot, she's done with it. I love my setter but I wish she would have picked up fetching birds.

Im right there with you. Mine will fetch but it is a hassle in brush. I have to call him over and over again to keep him where the bird kind of went down before he will retrieve. Any negative pressure at all and he refuses to train. He just won't do anything and acts like he knows nothing.

I have a 4 yo GSP that won’t retrieve a bird to save his life! He only retrieves a tennis ball for about 5-6 times in a row and then takes it to his kennel and that’s it! Won’t put a bird in mouth only to try and chew it. I’m sure I’ve ruined this dog, my fault for not spending more time with him.

From England, we obviously use different methods and certainly the Toe hitch isn't used at all or very infrequently. Many trainers in spaniels have a fear of training a dog that doesn't retreive well or is what some call a non retreiver. I haven't seen any other videos of this dog, but I am guessing that she has shown you some sort of natural ability in her hunting perhaps that you are happy to work through this difficult period. Many uk trainers would simply sell the dog to a pet home. All to often I see adverts for sale stating its a poor retreiver, of course that may imply that it has a mouth issue as well. However I applaud your training and willingness to give the dog the time it deserves, something I'd say 80% of uk trainers won't.
