I've been very lucky with my Lab pup. She slept through the night the first week with no crying. Only time I had issues is when she started having loose stool. THEN I was up most the night caring for her. Thank goodness the vet was able to help me with the loose stool. She is now 13 weeks old and well behaved. Even loves the snow here in Wisconsin.

Awesome video! We just brought home a lab puppy and this is exactly what we needed. Just finished up night six, the last few days it’s taken her less than five minutes to settle in, and even less time to settle after the middle of the night bathroom outings. At first we were super overwhelmed by how hard she freaked out but after watching this video it was easier to commit. It was definitely worth the struggle!

Just brought my Pudelpointer pup home 3 days ago and it has been getting better. I threw an unwashed T-shirt that I wore for 2 days in her crate so she has my scent with her all night and her crate is next to my bed. Expect a potty break at least a time or two during the night but she has not gone potty in the crate yet, so that's a good thing. I agree you need to practice "Tough Love" to get thru this period but it will get better.

This video is a godsend. Our 8 week retriever is already used to the crate at night. Night 1: I made the mistake of covering the crate with a sheet. He cried a lot Night 2: Lost the sheet. Cried 5 mins, slept. Night 3: Slept through the night. We slept too...finally!!! You guys rock!!

This was great! Thanks for the advice! I just brought home an 8 week old Picardy Spaniel puppy on Sunday and let him sleep with me on night one.. cut him some slack... but we just went through night 1 of sleeping in the crate and it was exactly like this! Potty before bed, pee 1:30am, pee and poop 4:30am, up for the day at 6am. Onto night 2 tonight! Thanks!

I had a GSP Dortmunder Vom Stillwater "Otto" 2009-2023 who made like one whimper on the first night and never made a sound after. Blessed with him. Just got a Burgos, Dreampoint's Canela "Nellie", and she whines for a little bit but is doing good. Same process on both. Sleeping downstairs and bedroom is upstairs. Bathroom before kennel and waking up in 4 hours for another potty break, then waking in the AM for a full on wake up. Just need to make the kennel a more positive experience because she ain't happy going in.

hey greetings from Australia. I will be getting a new GPS puppy in two weeks. I have trained puppies before as my choice of dog has always been German Shepherds. I have never done crate training so have enjoyed your videos. I am an 'old dog' 70 that needs to learn all over again as back in the day it was check chains an ignore the bad behaviour reward the good. I am so looking forward to working with her Tessa or Tess for short within your expert training videos. Loved your first video on bringing puppy home working straight away on light pressure approach with muzzle to stop nipping and the calm and measured approach to nail clipping. I have never attempted nail clipping as I was always frightened of cutting the wick and making a bad response to having nails clipped so this video was great. One issue for me though is that where I live, albeit rural with many wallabies, wombats, my chickens, I had not intention of hunting with her. I know that is what she was bred to be but how will I satisfy that very natural urge to hunt. I am active so will make sure there is plenty of exercise happening. Would love to be a member but your costs are in USD so how would I fare? Once again thank you for these great training videos very much appreciated. I have taken note of all the things I should buy before we bring her home. She will be 8 weeks by then

It is week three with our GSP pup. She also settled in about 3 days.. well, maybe 4. Also, her worst performance only lasted about 25 minutes. We started with her crate within 5 feet of where we slept. problem with puppy crate training is she got my internal clock changed so now I wake up briefly at 4am before "sleeping in" until 6:00. My life before puppy was always get up at 7:30. So, a bit of an adjustment. But... my wife teases that she made me sign a 12 page contract before she agreed to get the pup. I have to honor my contract even if that involves a new 6am wakeup. :-)

YAWA: Help! When I put my 10 month old GSP in his crate all he does is scratch the door. Is there a way I can discourage this?
@rmac2786 Жыл бұрын
Work your GSP more. I need to run mine about 20 miles before she gets truly tired out. Get a pair of roller blades or a bike and let them run. GSP’s are working dogs, a couple walks per day to them is like you having a cup of coffee. Just enough to wake them up and get their brain engaged. Spend an hour every night letting your pup exercise. I try and vary rollerblading, exploring forested areas around the neighborhood, playing fetch in a field, makeshift agility courses (empty parking lots work great, lots of obstacles to weave in and out of, railings work well as low clearance obstacles, bring a couple small plastic boxes and you’ve got a platform to jump on/over, etc). Engaging the brain while exercising yields better results!

We don't use keys for inside the crate, we also wait for them to calm down before letting them out to go potty as long as it has been a reasonable amount of time.

I have a 12 week old lab pup we just brought home. Tonight makes night 2. She was quiet the first night, woke up about 2am, went potty and right back to bed, stayed asleep until about 6am. No whining, no crying, not a peep except for potty time. Tonight she cried for about 45 minutes straight. I went to move her kennel, and the poor thing had worked herself up so much she vomited. Took her out for another potty break, she did her thing, moved her kennel right next to the bed, and she still cried for another 45 minutes (I periodically stuck my hands in her kennel and soothed her, but the second the hand was out she was back to screaming. Went to sit down next to her kennel after 45 minutes of crying. She quieted down after 15 minutes of sitting there, until I got back into bed. She woke up and went right back to crying. I sat back down, moved my 5 year old gsp’s bed right in front of the kennel door so the pup could see her, and haven’t heard a peep since. It’s not 1:15 AM and I have to be up at 5 to work my GSP/get a training session in with the pup before I’m off to work. Stay resilient everyone! Find something that works, and build off that!

We're picking up our Weimaraner puppy next week, the timing on this video is perfect. Our puppy is going to be dog #2 in the house, and dog #1 sometimes sleeps in our bed, and sometimes sleeps in his crate in a different room. While he prefers to sleep in the bed, he goes to his crate without hesitation when I queue him . I saw in a previous comment you suggest trying what you're hoping for as an end goal, which for us would be to have them both sleep in their individual crates in a second room, but does this change when there's another dog in the mix? I don't want the puppy to annoy dog #1 all night, or even worse, have the puppy's whining and crying rub off on dog #1, who while he was crate trained pretty easily, tends to be easily distracted and quick to vocalize his displeasure (or excitement, anticipation, wants, needs, etc...he likes to talk). Thoughts?
@StandingStoneKennels3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think you should have any issues with the pup annoying the older pup. :) Also yes try the area you are going to plan as an end goal first!! Thanks for watching!

What about a kennel regression? Is that a thing? Our 15 week old was doing great but last night and today she has resister the kennel by whining and crying for LONG periods of time. Super confused.
@StandingStoneKennels9 ай бұрын
Kennel regressions can definitely happen! Especially at that age because puppies are getting more bold and confident and need more training time to fulfill both their physical needs from an exercise standpoint, and also mental stimulation to keep them challenged and from getting bored! A tired puppy is a happy puppy!
@wadehoyt77073 жыл бұрын
Few notes. I think giving people the expectation that 15 minutes and up is out of the ordinary is a bit misleading. Some peoples puppies will cry for hours, 15 minutes would be a god send for most people in this situation. Also, for those who are watching this while trying to be quite or near their puppy who finally fell asleep maybe don’t put the sound of a wailing puppy in the background of a lot of the video. Great tips though!!

How many nights would you leave it next to your bed before you moved it back to its original place?

In the Crate / kennel training video 2 with Fox it seems as if she hasn’t seen a crate before, but at 10 weeks should have been sleeping in a crate for about two weeks. So, are these different experiences when you introduce the bigger crate that she doesn’t want to get into? My pup is 10 weeks and does NOT want to kennel in a crate. I hope you still glance at new questions.

Hi! Did you keep her crate in your room permanently? Is she able to sleep in the crate at night on her own?

But what if you don't care, or want the dog to sleep in the bed? What's the downside? The only downside I've ever heard is that the puppy might be injured by the person rolling over on them. But that isn't an issue with many people who aren't restless sleepers. So is there any other reason to not let the dog sleep with you in the bed?

Great question! We recommend crate training so that your dog is comfortable in a crate! Being comfortable in a crate will help them travel safely, kennel at a boarding or training facility and it will ultimately help keep your puppy and your stuff safe when you can’t supervise them!

Is hiding kibbles in crate good for crate training ?

Do you give the dog a treat after pottying in the middle of the night. Or ever for that matter? Or is that teaching the dog to wake you up to get a treat.

Hello! My dad sent me to check y'all out, as I am anticipating a new pup in about 4 months. A recommendation from him means you're better than good, so I've subscribed, and look forward to watching your videos. It's been 8.5 years since I've added a new puppy addition. That sound was a laughable reminder! Family has had GSPs my whole life, but this is my first, as my son has taken up the family's hunting tradition. With my previous (non-hunting) dogs that initially cried in a crate, Ive covered with a dark sheet to block off light and distraction, which helped. Are there reasons that covering the crate should be avoided? I also used verbal suggestion when placing in the "kennel". At this stage of the party, is that a pointless, or unreccomended, endeavor? Thank you!

Thank you for your advice it has helped me out a lot! I have a question, I constantly take my 9 week puppy outside to potty and stay out there for like 30 minutes and as soon as I come inside she pees in the floor or in her crate and It happens all the time. I have been trying to make her potty outside for 2 days but she never potty outside. What should I do ? I would highly appreciate your help!

There are a lot of factors that can be involved! This would be something we could help more with via Patreon! It is a subscription service that will allow us to go back and forth with questions and advice. Check it out here: www.patreon.com/standingstonekennels

I'm a light sleeper, so if I get woken up for too long I may not be able to fall back asleep. If I turn on a light and read, is that going to throw off the puppies sleep? My GSP comes home in 3 weeks.

We’ve been trying to work on crate training during the day. What do you do with a dog that won’t calm down and just rest. I take her for her morning walk, and when she goes in the crate she will cry for 6 hours, we let her out every couple hours for a potty break but put her back in and she just keeps going. Any advice?
